LO3:
The documentation linked to the production will be full and detailed and there will be
evidence that the production management and scheduling of the project has been effective
and carried out in a professional manner. The techniques used in the production of the work
are likely to be related to an understanding of current trends in the industry.
Planning
Brainstorm / mind map (add extra pages if necessary)
Risk assessment: Are there any health and safety issues you may encounter?
To make the set in a box I would use scissors which could cause injury, so I will need to be
careful when using them. I will use lights to light the set and these could get hot so I would
need to be careful not to touch them when hot. When making the set I will use hot glue to
stick the pieces down to the box so I will need to be careful when using it. The cable from the
light is a trip hazard so I will be careful not to trip over them.
Discuss any legal issues you may face. Eg; sound, plagiarism, age restrictions
To avoid legal issues, I would use royalty free music so that there were no copyright issues.
My video is aimed at children so there will not age restrictions so the video must be suitable
for all ages. To avoid plagiarism, I will make sure that I am not copying work that is already
out there. I can search for similar work online to make sure I am not copying some other
work.

What are the different possibilities you could explore using this format?
I will use armatures underneath the plasticine and will mix colours to create the colour I
want. To make grey I will mix white and black and to get brown I will mix orange and black.
What are the limitations of using this format? (i.e what problems/ obstacles might you
have?)
I will be limited to making characters that I can make with no experience in clay modelling.
They could also be fragile so I will use armatures to make them more sturdy. The box will
also cause limitation as the space will be limited. This means that the box I use must be big
enough to fit the set in and characters. The characters must also be big enough that they are
easy to move but small enough to fit. The plasticine will go hard when it gets cold so I will
animate it soon after making the characters.
What imaginative or inventive animations have you seen which use this format?
Add in links and screen shots of three examples of animations using this format.
This is set in a forest and lights are used within the set
rather than just to light the set. I like this idea so have
taken the idea to use fairy lights in my animation. The set
is detailed while the character is simple. I like the look of
this animation as it seems close and warm because of the
orange lights and brown trees.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6b-dLM5yfE
This is a music video with a stop motion video. I
like the trees as they are made of real sticks so I
am going to use this idea for my set. I dont
however, like the cool colours so I will use warm
colours for my set.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oa5Fyd1a2AQ
I like the colours used in this as they are
dark and dull but still coloured. I will use
this technique by using colours but mainly
dull colours. I also like the cutsy look of
the characters as theyre round with big
eyes.

Subject
What will the subject of your animation be?
The subject of my animation will be Nelly. She lives in a forest and collects colourful
butterflies and flowers.
Storyline
Describe the storyline of your animation. What events will happen to your characters?
Nelly looks through her book of butterflies and flowers, many of which are ticked off as she
has collected them. Then she gets to one that she does not have in her collection so she
goes looking for it in the forest. She finds it in a tree and chases it trying to catch it. When
she finally does catch it, she looks at it and realizes that it is cruel to keep them in her
collection so releases them. Delilah then comes back and sits with Nelly.
Characters
What characters will be in your animation?
The main character will be Nelly and Delilah. Delilah is the main butterfly that Nelly tries to
catch for her collection. There will be other butterflies in the background that fly away at the
end when they are released.

Add in images and drawings/ sketches of what they will look like.
Movement of characters
Mood board
Create a mood board showing what look your animation will have. Add images showing
ideas of mise-en-scene, characters, costumes and colours that will be present in the
different shots.
Sets / backgrounds
Will your set be;
A blue/green screen
An existing location
Draw sketches of how your sets/backgrounds will look. Add in labels to your diagrams and
details of locations / lighting etc.

Audience
Define the following characteristics of your audience;
Gender
Both
Age
7-12
Interests
Fantasy, nature
How will you ensure that your animation will suit your chosen audience?
It will have a happy ending as this will appeal to a younger audience. The fantasy story will
also appeal to a young audience.
How will they physically watch your animation? (i.e in an exhibition format, on screen,
projection, online?)
On line as many children watch videos online now so I think showing it on this platform
would reach the widest audience.
I recorded a focus group to determine the target audience for my video. The people in my
focus group thought that because the story was simple and had a happy ending.

Frame Rates
What is the duration of your animation in minutes? (minimum 30 seconds)
My animation will be a minute long
In seconds?
60 seconds
There are 60 seconds in a minute. How many frames (ie. Individual photos) will you
need to take?
1080
Lighting Design
Where will you place your light source(s) to create interesting effects?
I will point the lamp at the set so that the trees cast shadows, the lamp will also not be too
close to the set so that the light isnt too harsh. The fairy lights will be used as part of the set.
I will use the lights to imitate a camp fire and lights through the trees.
(LO3)
Frame numbers
You will need to label your images as frames
The first 24 frames will be written as;
0_1
0_2 etc etc
Dope sheets
A dope sheet is an animation tool which helps a animator organise the animation shot-byshot.
This gives the camera operator instructions on each shot type and how many frames this will
be used for.
A dope sheet is usually split into 5 different sections.
For
example;
Because you will be working with video, you will be using 30fps. You will need to complete a
dope sheet for EVERY SECOND of your animation.
i.e, if you make a 30 second animation, you will need to complete 30 dope sheets.
This will be a time-consuming task, but it will help you understand what will need to
happen in each of the shots you take. The higher marks will come from a detailed and
careful collection of dope sheets. For example, if your characters speaks, you will need to
show the mouth forming every shape in order to look effective.
