INTRODUCTION
In this modern world, competition is ubiquitously. For that reason, UM
Tagum College aims to produce graduates who are not just knowledgeable
but also more qualified than countless others all around the world.
Going to a college or university is a critical step, but they can greatly
enhance their classroom learning by gaining real world experience

through On-the-job training program. As what theyve said, experience is the

best teacher.
By exposing students to the real work place is something that can be
used by the students in their future job. It makes them flexible enough to
adjust in the real work place atmosphere. It develops their interpersonal skills
and social adaptability.
On-the-job training is very beneficial to all students. In addition in
gaining great experience to complete classroom learning, college internships
allows them to improve their portfolio or resume and make valuable industry
contacts that can be essential to landing their ideal job upon graduation.
We were being allowed to choose our host training establishment
among any accounting firms, business institutions and government as long as
we would be assigned in the accounting, auditing and budget section or
department. This is to be trained where in the four fields of accountant were
we are more interested. Thats why I chose Cabahug-Soo Bookkeeping and
Insurance office for my my on-the-job training. There are two main reason why
I chose Cabahug-Soo Bookkeeping and Insurance office. First is because it is
accounting firm and second because of its proximity to the school.
My whole experience in the firm was great because of the people Ive
been with and also to the employee who warmly welcome us. It further
enhanced my knowledge and skills when it comes to accounting. Also, it
improves my personality not just as a student but also as a worker.
As a student I realized now how important is on-the-job training
program is. It helps me discover skills that I thought I lack It. is indeed a
helpful tool in order for us to put into practice the theories we learned in
school.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PLACEMENT ENVIRONMENT

CabahugSoo Accounting and Insurance

Office
History of the Firm
The CabahugSoo Accounting and Auditing Office started on the year
2005. This was organized by the Certified Public Accountant by profession
Gleizl Joy C. Soo, With the cooperation of one of her trusted students
during her part-time teaching in St. Marys College of Tagum , namely
Connie Cosares-Cotanas, the firm was able to seek for prospective clients
and gradually render accounting and clerical servicesto the best of their
ability and ample knowledge.
Aside from being a professional accountant, Mrs. Soo decided to
venture in this type of industry primarily because of the influence of her
father, Mr. Manasseh Cabahug, who was also a part-time bookkeeper of
some known business establishments, including his manpower agency,
the Sputnik Janitorial & Allied Services. Through this, Mr. Manasseh
became not only the prime contributor but also the most essential mentor
to operate this firm successfully. In fact, he even forwarded this endeavor
to his daughter, along with his clients. Eventually, numbers of clients
augment. The first office was located at Erlyn Ville, Brgy. San Miguel,
Tagum City, where the family principally resides.
After 3 years of triumph and adjustments, the firms development have
grown and expanded prominently. That was when Mrs. Soo began
accepting On-The-Job Trainees and then transferred to a more efficient

and accessible location to improve convenience and enhance promotion

for potential clients. From that time up to present, it operates at Soo Bldg.
Rizal St., Tagum City. On the subsequent year, due to personal
inclinations, her partner Ms. Connie handed over her responsibilities to the
first ever trainees of the firm, namely Jellymee Espinosa and Queen Ann
Flor Israel, and ceased to continue her service with the firm. The two are
no longer trainees but rather became the regular bookkeepers of the firm.
Until now, they linger their loyalty to render their knowledge and skills
through the firm with the management of Mrs. Soo. At present, there are
five pleasant employees in the firm. Thus, as time goes by new employees
are integrated as well as lots of clients are still appealing for their services,
and in turn the firm is very enthusiastic in serving their clients with
prudence and full honesty

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

These are the duties I had performed during my on-the-job training in
Cabahug-Soo Bookkeeping and Insurance Office.
Performed Tax-Related Duties
The firm offers is a withholding agent. With this, I filed tax returns of
the clients and paid the tax dues in Landbank, RCBC and Metrobank. I
had also updated the Tin Validation Slip of the clients and made

inventory of the tax payments of a retiring business. I had also

experience computing output taxes of various businesses.
Performed Accounting-Related Duties
I was tasked to check the balances of each statement of account of
the client to ensure its reliability.
Performed Banking Transactions
I was tasked to deposit check at BDO, MetroBank, RCBC and BPI
and paid the tax dues of the clients at certain bank institutions.
Other Responsibilities
Aside from performing accounting related tasks, I also
performed other tasks. I was also tasked to bought office supplies,
photocopied and scanned documents, filed clients documents, and
among other things. They also tasked us to answer phone call from
client. As OJTs at the firm, we also see to it that we always keep the
firm clean without the demand of our supervisor.
PRACTICUM EXPERIENCE (REFLECTION)
I, Bernadette, Febie and JP decided to undertake our on-the-job
training at Cabahug-Soo Bookkkeeping and Insurance office simply because
of its proximity to the vicinity of UM Tagum College. Since we are attending
our summer class at evening so we decided to take the 8 hours per day
duration to finish our OJT in just a month. We believed that we can have a
better experience at the firm and can be closely supervised and directed by
our supervisor since there were only three of us trainees.
It was on May 12 this year when we start our on-the-job training at
Cabahug-Soo Bookkeeping and Insurance Office. On that day the first thing
comes up on my mind is how Im going to adjust on this new environment.
Although it is not my first time to work since Im a SPES grantee in our
municipality but still I feel a bit nervous as well as excited.

Im very pleased with the warm welcome of the employee. At first they
informed us the dos and donts of the firm. They even told us that we should
not address them as maam/sir but rather we should call them as ate/kuya
except for maam Gliezle Joy.
On the very first day the tasked they gave to us is to pay monthly taxes
to the Landbank since it is deadline for the payment of monthly taxes. We
were very shock when they gave us almost P300,000.00 for the payment of
monthly taxes of twenty clients. It was my first time to have those bundle of
money so we are very careful on paying attention to the money.
By the help of the employee of the firm we adjust to the new
environment quickly. They treat us nicely. They even invite us on their
personal celebration like birthday of their sons/daughters. Through the 180
hours duty we feel like we are really an employee of the firm.
This on-the job training paved way to expand my experience especially
in the field of commerce. I have experienced entering banks (almost all banks
in Tagum city) which I dont usually go. Depositing and withdrawing checks to
the banks.
I also experienced standing in a line for an hour just to pay
monthly/quarterly/annual taxes. Though it is very tiring but still we are
enjoying it. We are also happy when we are going to landbank because it is
the place where all of the interns of the firm usually meet.
Our Host Training Establishment (HTE) is very considerate especially
in our studies. They even told us that we can absent if it is the day day of our
exam provided that we informed them ahead of time.
We are very lucky that during our time firms operation is not busy.
More often we are the one who initiate to asked for work for us to have an
output in that day. Thats why sometimes even a simple task, all of us will do
that job.
In this journey also Ive develop my interpersonal/social skills. It really
boost my confidence to talk to different person of different walk of life. Making
chat to real employees gives me more idea on what real world is. They gives

us advices on how to deal with different people with different background

based on their experiences. Theyve also told us their personal stories about
their life, the struggles they encountered and how they conquered it all.
They also task us to answer phone calls which is very new to me and
since Im not really comfortable speaking on the telephone thats why Im
afraid at the beginning. It was on the first day when they taught us how to
answer telephone call politely. At first its a little bit awkward and I cant really
control my nerves but later on I handle it well.
Aside from resolving tax problems of the clients, the firm also offer
services for retiring businesses. With that, we were being tasked by Ma'am
Kate to compute for the sum of the sales invoices. I had also made an
inventory of the tax payments of the client. It was a process of checking in the
inventory list the type of BIR form of the client, its monthly tax dues and
indicating when it was paid and how much.
On our last day we were very happy that they bought us ice cream and
bread which we dont usually ate in the firm. They said that since it is our last
day thats why our snacks is special. They gave us their farewell message and
thanks us for effort. It was a bit sad but also a happy moment since we
already finished the 180 hours on-the-job training requirement.
For me, my training at the Cabahug-Soo Bookkeeping and Insurance
Office is worthwhile. We did not just stay in one place but we came to go to
different places and exposed ourselves in dealing different persons. I learned
how to do certain transactions. I have learned a lot and I gained experiences
which enabled me to become a better person.

New Skills Acquired and Improved

During my stay at Cabahug-Soo Bookkeeping and Insurance Office I
learned different things not just on work related skills but also in my personal
aspect.

I learned how to fill up manually different BIR forms whether it is

monthly, quarterly, annual, withholding, open case or penalties.
I learned how to deposit check at different banking institution such as
BDO, BPI, RCBC, and Metrobank. I had also learned how to pay the BIR
penalties at Landbank and the tax type of each BIR form.
Aside from these, I had also developed my social and communication
skills. The firm has to deal with different kinds of customers and we were able
to entertain them also. With this, I was able to develop my communication
skills on how to talk with the customers politely. Every time also that I was
given a task, I would often ask my supervisor on the steps I would be taking to
know if I am doing right. It was opposite to what I was before because I am
not used to asking questions and talking to other people especially to those I
am not close with or I know that holds a higher position.
Ive also develop my self confidence because of the daily transaction
that weve gone through. Talking to strangers just to ask queries is a bit hard
from the start but it really help me to face different characters and attitudes. It
made me more professional in everything that I do because of the politeness
that I learned during my stay as an intern.
My whole experience as an intern is priceless with all the new skills
that I have garnered and all the abilities that I develop. Indeed there is no
greater teacher than experience. Now I learned how all the theories taught in
the school really do in the real world. And I think the key that Ive successfully
finished those job is that I have now a self confidence that really instilled on
me because there is no greater motivation than believing yourself.

Management Techniques Observed

We stayed at Cabahug-Soo Bookkeeping and Insurance Office for one
month. I felt lucky that we were being accepted in the firm and be able to
observe and experience the technique employed Maam Gliezle Joy C. Soo,
CPA in the management of her firm and to her employees.

In terms of the working place, the office is very conducive. It has air
conditioner to keep the office cold and accommodating to the customers. The
whole office is shared by three establishment. One is the Cabahug-Soo
Bookkeeping and Insurance Office which is owned by maam Gliezle Joy C.
Soo, CPA. The second is the Royal Budget Tarvel which is owned by mam joy
youger brother and the last one is the Scorpion Janitorial and Allied Services
(SJAS) which is owned by Mr. Manasseh T. Cabahug, maam Joy father.
Although it only has a limited space, it still managed to give each employee a
place where they can do their work. Since the Office is so small for three
establishment, we as OJTs, were also given a space outside where we can do
our tasks.
Each employee is also given computers except for the collector. There
is a high speed internet connection where we can easily access the
information they need online but the capacity of their computer cannot
accommodate their plenty client thats why many of the computers are very
lag.
The office has no water supply for the employees. So it is initiative of
everyone to have a bottled water or a tumbler for water. It has also utensils
which we can use whenever we needed to such as when we had our snacks
and meals in the office.
Since the office is inside the Khingchey building they have an access
on the building generator whenever there is a power interruption. Thats why
they can continue to work whenever there is no electricity.
In terms of serving the customers, Maam Joy sees to it that they are
entertained. When the concern of the client is confidential, she talks with them
in private. she listens well to their concerns and find practicable solutions to
solve their problems. she is very approachable.
In terms of how she manages his employees, she does it aligned to the
values he set for his firm. She gives them his full trust. She treats them like a
family. She provides them room for their personal development as
professionals.

During our stay at the firm, I had realized how important it is to manage
well not just your business but also your employees. They are the one who
contributes a lot to your operation. It is important to take good care of your
employees so that they will work for the firm willingly and do their respective
job with passion.

Classroom Skills Employed

Doing our job as an interns makes us realizes the importance of every
lessons our professors are teaching. it really help us to make our job easily
since they will not allot time to teach us how to do a certain task.
They task us to compute for the output tax of various establishment.
Recording it to their respective books.
I had also used my knowledge in COMED6 in manipulating the MS
Excel. It was when we posted in the software the OR number and the amount
of the cash receipts of the client we were auditing. This enabled me to encode
the receipts number faster because of the formulas being taught to us and
other shortcuts to easily maneuver the excel. With that, I was happy that I had
finally applied that knowledge in real life situation and realized the importance
and relevance of the course to my future career.
It is really important to give importance of what was being taught in
school. Because of the learnings I acquired, it boosted my confidence in
performing my tasks because I know I have my knowledge in it.

Problems Encountered
It is normal that in every business there are always threats or problems
that may encounter. Same in the HTE that weve been, they have also
problem that they are still facing.
First is the limited space of office since it is shared by 3 establishment.
Because of the limited space the interns are placed outside the office though

it still good place but there is no ventilation outside the office. Also they cant
accommodate plenty of clients at the same time because of the limited space.
It is also a problem that the office is mixed up. There are some
instances that we interns are task to do a job of different establishment. Also
clients are sometimes confuse because of the mixed up office. Sometimes
they mistakenly identify and ask queries at the wrong office.
Though the employee have their own personal computers but still it is
big problem because their PC is very lag. When we asked why is that so,
theyve told us that it is because the system of their computers cannot hold
many information. Also the system of eBIR is so big that their personal
computers is very lag when they are using it. Thats why some of them prefer
to use their personal laptop for the online filing.
The documents of the client are well arranged but the folder they are
using is not sufficient for some clients who have many documents on their
folder. Some folder are already damaged because of the large amount of
documents its holding.
With these problems, I have learned how important it is to address the
needs of your business in order to improve its operation. From small problems
to big ones, these should be given attention for it will affect the productivity of
employees and as a consequence, the deliverance of the services you
rendered.
Business Challenges
Many businesses today are facing different challenges. Challenges that
can destroy or can help the business to succeed. Hypercompetition is
inevitable. Thats why making the best from other is a requirement to stay in
the track.
Today, how to maintain the loyalty of the employee to the employer
becomes a challenge to every business. These days, there are only fewer
persons who can be trusted because even close relatives would try to deceive
each other just to get what they want. If employees are not well-taken care of,
this will drive them to do undesirable acts. Employee absenteeism,

embezzlement, low productivity and unfavorable working atmosphere are only

some of its consequence.
I also considered maintaining business ethics to be one of the
challenges faced by the businesses today. We are now in a highly modernized
era and many business industries are now widely spread. Because of extreme
competition, some businesses forget or otherwise violate business ethics just
to maintain and survive in the market.
For me, this challenges every business on how they can maximize their
profit while maintaining ethical standards. Corporate social responsibility is
innate to them. Thus, they need to consider not only the interest of the owner
but also take into account other factors because it can greatly affect the
business. They should not only be after profit but also go after for the benefit
of the people and the community in which it operates. However, there are
some companies or business organizations who just do what is beneficial on
their part without thinking its effect.
Through my practicum experience, I am able to realize how these
things are important in every business. This lets me to be aware of the
problems that I may encounter in the future as an employee. I have learned
the importance of ones good relationship not only with his boss but also to
other employees to keep the working environment conducive and free from
negativity.
As a future employee, my practicum experience gave me an idea on
the possible unethical misconduct that will happen in my future working place.
It made to develop further my adherence to the right conduct in order to
maintain integrity in myself and serve with honesty.

Lessons Learned
From my on-the-job training experience at the Cabahug-Soo
Bookkeeping and Insurance office, I had learned a lot of things not just about
the possible job that we will have on the near future but also the attitude that
one should possess.

I had learned that patience and courteousness is important in dealing

different people with different personalities. I have realized that no matter who
are your customers, you should deal with them fairly.
Moreover, I learned to value and balance my time. I learned how to use
my time effectively and prioritize things. It is very important for every second
counts. Every time wasted, is also an opportunity wasted. I also became
responsible in everything I do. I take seriously my task for I realized I am
accountable to all my acts. This made me to become mature enough.
The training also made me realized how important everything that are
being taught in school are. Every courses, we considered minor and major,
should be given importance for they are very useful. This changed my
perception. Before, I study just to get a higher grade, now I study with the idea
to prepare myself for my future job career. I now tend to enjoy every lessons
taught to us and accept every challenges it may give. I became a better
person.
I also learned how important it is to have a good relationship with all
the people you have to work with. It can really affect the performance of your
duty. As on my experience, I am more enthusiastic to do my task every time I
see my supervisor smiling and I feel comfortable every time she talks with us,
as well as with the other employees.
Above all these things, I learned that it is important to behave in an
appropriate manner. Good attitude is always a plus point. Without which,
knowledge would be nothing. This would also help us to maintain a wellbalanced relationship with our co-employees and avoid any conflict or
workplace negativity.

CONCLUSIONS
Based on my practicum experience, I can conclude that the on-the-job
training is really important. It is indeed helpful to students, especially to those

students who do not have any working experience like me, to at least try for a
short period of time what it feels to be exposed in a real working environment.
It does not only limit ourselves to the learnings acquired in school but it gives
us additional knowledge to deepen our understanding on certain things.
I had also realized that is important to be sufficiently equipped with the
necessary knowledge and skills on your job. Just like what was being taught
on us in our accounting courses, it is really an aid to effectively perform our
tasks by employing our knowledge. This would help us to deeply understand
our courses and become confident in performing our tasks. When I had my
on-the-job training, I have not yet taken up my Business and Transfer Taxation
course. Because of this, I cannot really relate on the tasks given to me.
However, with the help of my training, it had given me some knowledge about
the course.
We should also not expect too much works on our training. We were
only trainees and the tasks that would be given on us will only be the basics.
At the very beginning of my training, I thought that we would be doing
intensive accounting works. I even felt excited imagining that we could
accompany in some field works of the accountants. However, the month that
we had our duty was not the filing of tax returns. With that, the firm was not so
busy. Still, I did not regret of spending my training at the firm because we had
experience auditing before our training has ended and we were still able to
use our learnings.
In overall, my on-the-job training had motivated me to accept every
challenges in my life and to go outside the box. With the training, I was able to
develop my skills and be able to learn new things. I might not have met the
expectation I had set for my training. Nevertheless, it still gave me a good
start of experience which inspires me to do better and give myself room for
improvement.

RECOMMENDATIONS
On the Practicum/OJT

The OJT is helpful in preparing the students to the real world of work.
However, for me there are certain courses that needs to be taken first before
having the training.
Career Education (CaEd) 500 should be first given to students to guide
them on the appropriate attitude towards work and how to behave in a proper
way in the normal working environment.
Business and Transfer Taxes should be first taken by the students
before having the training. As I can observe, duties regarding to tax are
common to us OJTs. I think its more relevant to finish first the two courses of
tax so that the students can relate on their tasks. It would not just let us to
apply our knowledge in it but also, it will help us deeply understand the
theories we learned and appreciate its relevance.

To the Future Student Practicum

The on-the-job training is helpful for the students in choosing their
carreer path soon as they graduate. Thus, they should not take it for granted.
As early as now, they should establish their goals in life and decide carefully
on what sector in accounting they want to work soon. With this in mind, they
can be able to choose in what establishment they can spend they training.
This is for them to acquire the right knowledge and skills suited on the job
they want to have. Also, to serve the purpose of the training which is to
prepare them enough on the path they want to take.
Above all, the students should bring with them the right behavior as
practicum students because knowledge alone is useless if we don't behave
ethically. They should just enjoy the whole practicum experience and at the
same time, learn while having fun.
