REVIEW
Recorded live at the Village Vanguard, New York, New York. Band 1 recorded on Ma
rch 9 & 10, 1990 and July 3 & 7, 1991. Band 2 recorded from December 3-5, 1993.
Band 3 recorded from December 2-4, 1994. Includes liner notes by Stanley Crouch.
To truly capture the spirit of jazz, one must experience the music live as it ha
ppens. To this end, Wynton Marsalis has assembled a stunning collection of perfo
rmances by three versions of his working septet at the famous Village Vanguard b
etween 1991 and 1994. In this legendary underground temple of jazz, the music is
free to become whatever it chooses. Under Marsalis's guidance his art comes ali
ve in this setting, free from the constraints of more formal recording or perfor
ming restrictions. This is certainly the best forum for the music to communicate
with the audience, and each of Marsalis' groups rises to the occasion and deliv
ers excellent performances that sustain throughout the seven discs of this set.
For the listener, this amounts to sitting right down front--minus the steep cove
r charge and minimum, of course--for a lifetime of truly connected experiences o
f an art that was captured in its prime. Aside from being present at the origina
l occurrence, there is no other way to get closer to the heart of the music.
