formation of the human person. Given the
importance of the work done by Catholic
educators, I join the Synod Fathers in gratefully
encouraging all those devoted to teaching in
Catholic schools, priests, consecrated men
and women and committed lay people to
persevere in their most important mission. The
influence of these educational centers should
extend to all sectors of society, without
distinction or exclusion.

Pastors Corner
My dear brothers and sisters,
This week is Catholic Schools Week. This
annual celebration is an opportunity for us to
recognize and give thanks for the important
ministry which occurs in our catholic school
communities. Our parish is blessed to have as
part of its mission and identity our own
parochial school. Saint Columba School,
opened in 1963, has for over fifty years served
the needs of our parish and the people of Serra
Mesa by handing on the Catholic Faith and
forming young men and women spiritually,
academically and emotionally. We will always
be grateful for the vision of Monsignor ONeil
and the Sisters of Mercy who so graciously
began this important endeavor. Currently lay
teachers and staff minister to the 150 students
who make up our School community.

I hope all parishioners will plan on joining us on

February 25th for our Annual School Gala. This
is a wonderful opportunity for all parishioners
to come together for a night of fun and food
in order to support the ongoing work of our
School. Tickets are available through the
school office. Once again this year along with
the Gala, we are holding a raffle. This year the
first prize is $5000. Tickets are only $20 and all
proceeds go directly to the school.
Fr. Ed

In his 1999 document The Church in America

Pope John Paul II stressed the importance of
Catholic Education when he wrote: Education
can play an outstanding role in promoting the
inculturation of the Gospel. Nonetheless,
Catholic centers of education, and those
which, although non-denominational, are
clearly inspired by Catholic principles, will be
able to engage in authentic evangelization
only if at all levels "including that of the
university" they clearly preserve their Catholic
orientation. The content of the education they
impart should make constant reference to
Jesus Christ and his message as the Church
presents it in her dogmatic and moral
teaching. Only in this way will they train truly
Christian leaders in the different spheres of
human activity, and in society, especially in
politics, economics, science, art and
philosophical reflection. Something similar
must also be said about Catholic schools,
particularly with regard to secondary
education: "A special effort should be made
to strengthen the Catholic identity of schools,
whose specific character is based on an
educational vision having its origin in the
person of Christ and its roots in the teachings of
the Gospel. Catholic schools must seek not only
to impart a quality education from the
technical and professional standpoint, but also
and above all provide for the integral

FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

JANUARY 29, 2017

SCHOOL NEWS
Dear Families,
Catholic Schools around the nation will be celebrating many years of excellent faith-based education from
January 29th - February 4th. During Catholic Schools Week we take this time to celebrate faith-based
education, all the accomplishments of our schools, its contributions to our communities and world, and our
commitment to the teachings of Our Lord. Catholic education has the mission to providing an educational
system that not only prepares its students with an academic foundation but that also enables our students to
go forth and share their God given talents. It aspires to touch our students minds, hearts, and souls through
teaching, modeling, and practicing our Catholic faith to become productive contributors to their families,
community, and world.
Historically, Catholic schools have had their many challenges. Today, our biggest challenge is the variety of
educational institutions from which our families have to choose. As a result, St. Columba, like many other
Catholic schools across the nation has faced economic challenges. Nevertheless as Catholic educators we
will continue to stand by our beliefs in providing one of the best educational institutions in the world. We will
continue to persevere through our challenges, and strive to provide our students with a faith-based education
that will give them the tools to Go Make a Difference.
Our Pastor, Father Ed McNulty, with the support of Reverend Bishop McElroy, has reassured our community
that St. Columba will be open next school year and continue to serve our community. As the school principal I
will continue to seek all avenues to work with our teachers, staff, and community to provide excellent
education and secure its legacy for years to come.
St. Columba invites you to join us for some of our Catholic Schools Week festivities. We will begin our kick
off with the Sixth Grade Annual Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday, January 28th from 4:30-8:30 in the Parish
Hall. On Sunday, January 29th, we invite you to join us for our Annual Open House following the 9:30 Mass until
12:30 pm. Please come and visit our classrooms and see for yourself some of the wonderful accomplishments
of our students and teachers. We are proud of our school and excited to share all that we do with the
community.
St. Columba School is also sponsoring its First Annual Blood Drive. We encourage you to sign up either online.
You never know whose life you might be saving. Our Scholastic Book Fair will also be open to the community
on Sunday, January 29th from 8:30 am-12:30 noon. There will be a variety of books for all school ages to enjoy.
We hope to see you at our Open House. Please spread the word! Together we are One!
In Christ,
Ms. Navarro

any questions, please contact Ms. Navarro.
GALA 2017: Gala 2017 is just around the corner! Invite family and friends to join the fun February 25th at the Four
Points Sheraton located at 8110 Aero Drive from 6:00 11:00 pm. Come enjoy a delicious dinner, dance and
gamble a bit and help our school make some money. All proceeds go directly into our school budget and we
depend on everyone to make this evening a financial success! Also, dinner invitations were sent home last week,
and we ask you to please RSVP by February 13th. Return your RSVP by February 6th and you will be entered into a
drawing for a free hotel room the evening of Gala. Also sent home was a list of auction incentives for purchasing
raffle tickets and dinner tickets by January 31st. Prizes this year are: 1st prize $5,000.00 2nd prize $500.00 and 3rd prize
100 lottery tickets. Each family received 10 tickets, if you are not able to sell all ten; we ask that you please sell 5
tickets! An event of this magnitude takes lots of volunteers and lots of hard work! If we all work together, this event
can be terrific! So lets step up and help to make Gala 2017 one of our best!
