Chapter 3 Project

For our chapter three project, we decided to evaluate the height of fifty different athletes.
To obtain a random sample, we simply searched athlete list on Google and the search engine
gave us a random list of fifty different athletes. After collecting our data, we found that the mean
was 73.54 inches. The mean is the average number in a data set. We were able to find our
mean by adding up all of the data values and then dividing by how many data values that we
had. The median was calculated as 73 inches, which was our middle data value. We found the
median by putting our data values in order from smallest to largest and marked each data value
until we were in the middle of our data value. Our median was between two numbers, but since
they were the same value, the median was what those two data values were. Our mode was
also 73 inches because that data value occurred the most in the set. We found the mode by
putting all of our data into a google sheet and used the command control+f to see how many
times a data value occurred. Our range for the data was 20 inches, which means that our data
had a spread of 20 inches. To find the range, we took our highest number and the smallest
number and subtracted the two numbers. After finding our range, we calculated the 5%
trimmed mean and the 10% trimmed mean. The 5% trimmed mean was 73.4 inches and the
10% trimmed mean was 73.35 inches. We found the trimmed mean by taking the amount of
numbers and multiplied by .05 for 5% and .10 for 10%. Then the number that we got we cut that
many numbers of the top and the bottom. Then once we cut those numbers off we took the new
data set and found the new mean. The trimmed mean shows us how the mean changes when
we take a certain percentage away from our actual data list. We found the variance to be 17.03
inches and the standard deviation was 4.13 inches. We found the variance and the the
standard variation by pushing stat and edit one. Once we have pushed those we put in all our
data and then we went to calc, 1 var stats. When we use Var Stats, it will list these values as
well as some others such as the mean and median. The variance and standard deviation are
used for the measure of spread around the mean. Finally the coefficient of variation was
5.61%. The coefficient of variation is used for the measure of spread represented as a
percentage. The lower the percentage, the more cluster the data is. For the Chebyshev Therm,
75% of our data was between 65.28 to 81.8 inches. For 88.9% of our data it fell between 61.15
to 85.93 inches. When we calculated the 93.8% we found that it fell between 57.02 to 90.06
inches. The Chebychevs Theorem is useful for finding what data values are 75%, 88.9%, and
93.8% of the data. We were able to find the Chebychevs Theorem by taking our mean and
adding and subtracting our standard deviation from it. The different percentages required the
standard deviation to be multiplied by a number. For finding the 75%, the standard deviation
was multiplied by 2, 88.9% had standard deviation multiplied by 3, and 93.8% s standard
deviation multiplied by 4. We multiply by these numbers so we can find the range of numbers
that 75% of our data fall into. For our five number summary, we found our min data value was
65 inches, quartile 1 to be 71 inches, median to be 73 inches, quartile 3 76 inches, max was 85
inches, and finally our IQR was 5 inches. We found our minimum data value by finding the
lowest number off of our list. The way we found outliers was we multiplied our interquartile range
by 1.5 inches, which equaled 7.5 inches, and added that number to quartile 3 and subtracted
that amount from quartile 1. After adding and subtracting, we took what they equaled and
compared it to the data to see if there was any data values that equaled the number or if a
number was above the quartile 3 amount or less than the quartile 1 amount. We found one

outlier above the quartile 3 amount, which was 85 inches, but we still included that data value in
our box-and-whisker plot.
