The Town of Strathmore has received
$450,000 for upgrades to the ice plant
system at the Strathmore Family Centre
arena, through a new federal funding
program.
To assist communities in celebrating
Canadas 150 years of confederation,
the federal government has launched
the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP 150).
A total of $42.2 million has been allocated for community improvement
projects across Western Canada.
Darshan Kang, Member of Parliament
(MP) for Calgary Skyview, announced
on Jan. 18 that seven recreational and
cultural projects in southern central
Alberta have received a Government
of Canada CIP 150 investment total of
$1,638,814.
With this federal funding, many
arenas and recreation centres will receive upgrades and be improved. Such
as the ice plant here in the Strathmore
Family Centre arena, and the beautiful Sportsplex in Siksika, said Kang.
Projects will help and enhance energy
efficiency in community activities and
centres.
He added that the projects will leave
a legacy lasting well beyond this year.
Upgrades at the Strathmore arena
will include a new condenser and motor, two new compressors and motors,
two brine pumps and new control system upgrades.
The Strathmore Family Centre is
designed for year-round recreation.
Thousands of people pass through this
centre weekly, said Strathmore Mayor
Michael Ell, who added that the centre operates at capacity for most of the
year.
The current ice plant system in place
is over 26 years old and has not yet
needed any major renovations.

Five of
Diamonds
to perform
ADELLE ELLIS
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Musical Arts Society
has found another great band for the
residents of Strathmore and surrounding
communities to listen to, dance with and
enjoy.
On Feb.11 they will present Five of
Diamonds, a cover band from Hanna
whose song library consists primarily of
country and classic rock music.
We heard them at Hand Hills rodeo
last year and they are so great, said Charlotte Wilson, a member of the Strathmore
Musical Arts Society.
Tickets are $50 per person and will include the show at 8 p.m., preceded by
a chicken cordon bleu dinner at 7 p.m.
with tiramisu for dessert. A cocktail hour
at 6 p.m. will kick off the evening.
The show will take place just before
Valentines Day so this is a great date
night to celebrate it, said Wilson.
Five of Diamonds plays covers of a
variety of artists and has a country rock
sound.
Theyre a really fun group. They have
lots of energy, they are amazing, said
Linda Storkson, president of the Strathmore Musical Arts Society. They do
amazing covers, top of the line stuff.
According to Five of Diamonds bass
player and backup vocalist Derrick
Campbell, the band has learned dozens
of songs over the past few years covering
many different genres.
We play rock, country and pop; new
and old in all genres, he said.
The band plays a wide variety of events
and functions each year. They tailor each
show to the style and genre request of
the customer.
Versatility is the key to our success,
said Campbell, who added that they will
be playing a wide range of music to
make sure there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Five of Diamonds have been playing
together for four years. They got their
start organizing a last-minute Christmas
dance where they learned enough songs
within a months time to make the dance
a success. Since then, theyve continued
practicing, learning new songs and taking bookings.
The band has had the same five band
members for all the years they have been
playing. Besides Campbell, there is Garrett Buchfink, front-man and vocalist;
Lane Westlake playing lead guitar and
lap steel; Mitchell Maetche who plays
keyboard, piano, rhythm guitar and sings
backup vocals; and Chris Warwick on
drums and singing backup vocals.
We love dancers, so that is our goal
for each show, said Campbell. Playing
for a full dance floor is far more exciting,
and the high energy is contagious. The
more fun the audience has, the more fun
we have as well.
Tickets for the show are available online at strathmorearts.com, or at Assist
Business Centre, Marlin Travel, Pro Water
Systems, Chinook Financial and Hobs
Hobbies.

Djemb Drumming
Students of Sacred Heart Academy spent their first week back
to school from Christmas break learning West African drumming
from The One World Drum Company. Each grade had five days
worth of private lessons as Roger Duncan, founder of The One
World Drum Company, taught the students the art of drumming
on a Djemb. Kids respond well to it because every kid can be
in it and participate. Most importantly drumming teaches us all
to listen to each other, said Duncan on the benefits of teaching
a drumming class in schools. A public assembly was held on
Jan. 13 and the whole school as well as parents were invited to
hear each class share a song.

Students final project shines light in dark times

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

Emily M. Cambridge, a fourth-year student at Rosebud
School of the Arts, is producing and performing the musical
Dani Girl as her Final Project, Feb. 11 and 12.
Dani Girl, written by Michael Kooman and Christopher Dimond, is about a nine-year-old girl with cancer.
When I first heard about the story, I thought oh, a musical
about cancer? Thats interesting, Cambridge said. [But] instead of it being this really sad and hopeless story, it was the
complete opposite. It was full of hope and joy and, although
there are some sad and tender moments, it showed the light
that can still shine through even in these awful times.
Danis hospital roommate, 10-year-old Marty, is played by
Cambridges husband Kevin Cambridge. Isajah MacDonald
plays her imaginary friend, Raph, and Trisha Lewandowski
plays Danis mother. David Snider is directing.
They [children] go on this magical, imaginative journey to
discover why cancer exists, said Cambridge, who plays the
title role. She believes if she can discover why it exists, then
shell get her hair back that shes lost from the chemo, and
when she gets her hair back, then shell be cured.
It is a story of light in the darkness and hope in despair,
she added, explaining why she chose Dani Girl for her Final Project. I want to be an artist who tells these kinds of
stories that remind us that theres still hope in the world,
even in times where it seems that we cant find it, that the

light will still be there. The light shines even brighter when
its dark.
Cambridge said acting in, producing and marketing the
show is a lot of work. But shes found her confidence has
grown in the process.
Ive wanted to own and run a theatre company. Its been
one of my dreams, but Ive never done anything like it before, she said. Throughout this process Ive actually discovered just how much I like producing, and how much I
enjoy finding a story Im really interested in and helping
that story come to life.
Everyone who is in middle school or older will enjoy Dani
Girl, Cambridge said.
Anyone who has gone through a difficult time, it will
speak to them particularly, she said. If you like musicals,
youre really going to like it, because its got great music.
Dani Girl plays on Rosebuds BMO Studio Stage, Feb. 11
at 9 p.m., and Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. There is also
a performance for school classes at 10:15 a.m. on Feb. 13.
Reserve tickets or inquire about the school performance at
403-625-0219 or lightinthedarktheatre@gmail.com. Tickets
are $15 cash or cheque at the door.
I think (the audience) is going to love the spunk and determination and playfulness of Dani and Marty and Raph,
she said. I do hope they walk away with hope. And if anybodys going through a dark time, whether thats cancer or
not, it could be any situation, that they remember that not
all is lost, that there is still that glimmer.

Federal grant helps Strathmore Family Centre

A complete overhaul of the system is
needed, said Ell. It is vital to extending the reliability and life expectancy of
this facility.
The new compressors will improve
the energy efficiency of the plant by 20
to 25 per cent, which will lower operating costs and be better for the environment.
Siksika Nation received $409,500 in
CIP 150 funding to renovate Siksika
Deerfoot Sportsplex.
Standard and District Agricultural
Society received $50,000 to enhance
light energy efficiency at the Standard
and Rosebud Arena. There will be new
LED lights installed over the ice surface
as well as in the bathrooms, meeting
room, mechanical room, change rooms
and outside of the building.

Taking care of business

SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

To handle business in a fair and informed manner, Town of Strathmore
staff has developed a procedural bylaw
that provides a guideline for council
decision-making processes, and mandates for various committees appointed
by council.
Lawyers reviewed the draft, and the
document follows direction under the
Municipal Government Act.
Administrations focus was to ensure
that councils procedures fully support
efficient and effective decision making, said Jennifer Sawatski, town clerk.
The document has specific guidelines
for council actions on day-to-day business and subsections of their specific
duties. Council establishes all committees and appoints members, and there
is an annual review of the committees.
Bylaw 16-18 lists the procedures for organization and elections of committee
chairs, guidelines for aspects of meetings and public interactions. The complete bylaw is on the Town of Strathmore website.
Topics considered for council meetings fall under the agenda and are set
seven days prior to the council meetings. Submissions for the agenda must
be in writing and addressed to the
town clerk, who confers with the chief
administrative officer (CAO) regarding
action taken for the submission. They
refer it to committee or to council, or
just have administration reply.
If the matter is not clearly set out
and signed, with the name and address
of the writer included, the clerk may
disregard the communication. Other
factors that may reject a submission is
non-factual, vexatious, abusive or un-

clear information.
Town of Strathmore councillor Rocky
Blokland stated that under section 86
of the bylaw, the ability of the clerk to
disregard a citizens communication
seemed in violation of their individual
rights.
Are we not taking away our democratic rights of the people of Strathmore with this? he asked.
When council calls a public hearing, those residents who want to speak
must submit a written request by noon
Wednesday prior to the meeting date.
No late submissions are accepted. Pre-

senters are limited to their topic and encouraged to keep presentations under
10 minutes. At public hearings, a person has five minutes to address council
and cannot speak more than once.
Council meetings are to run until 9
p.m., but can be extended by one hour
or adjourned to another date, by a twothirds vote of council.
There are also modes of conduct for
the public: disruptive individuals can
be asked to leave the meeting, with
fines set from $200 to $10,000 for refusing to leave, and RCMP may be called
if necessary.

Capsule Comments
Good bladder health means allowing it to fill
with urine before emptying it. Many people go
whenver they feel the urge or they go now so
they dont have to worry about it later. If the
bladder isnt allowed to fill properly it might
shrink a little causimg you to feel the urge to
go more often. You can retrain your bladder by
holding the urine longer.
Heres a good idea to aid in getting a good
nights sleep. Make a to do list each night just
before you turn the light out. Having the next
days obligations down on paper (or digitally)
will help avoid the stress that you might forget
something and it will relax your mind to help
you get a good nights sleep.
The internet is full of health information. The
question is whether the source of the information
is reliable or not. Here are two sites that contain
reliable information on health. NHS Choices is
a British site from their National Health Service.
Another site is Medline Plus from the U.S. and
is a combined effort of the National Library of
Medicine and the National Institute of Health.
Both sites are comphrensive and reliable.
Pharmacists are sometimes asked whether
drinking alkaline water will help avoid illness.
The answer is probably not. The natural pH
(measure of acidity/alkalinity) of our blood is
7.35-7.45 which is alkaline already and nothing
we eat or drink will change that.

Times CORRECTION
In the Jan. 20 edition of the Strathmore Times,
an error was made which was then quoted in
the Land annexation supported by town article. The Town [Strathmore] gave us a letter to
connect to their sanitary system, not their water
system. This is due to the fact that the town is
on City of Calgary-supplied water which cannot
be extended outside of the boundary, re-stated
Kristi Beunder, a planning consultant with Civic
Works, a specialized Calgary-based planning
and design consulting firm. The previous printed
quote had the two services, water and wastewater, in reversed roles.

NEWS

By Irene Knappe, Secretary / PR / Poppy Chair

I hope you have marked February 4th on your calendar to come to The
Legion to say hi and congratulate our Comrade John Scheer with his 90th
birthday!
On Saturday, January 21st, Comrade Jenny and I attended the Annual
Newsy Neighbours Best in Business Awards for which the Legion was nominated twice. Im sorry to say that no awards came the Legions way, but
some very worthy businesses did well. Im just really glad to see that many
of us are shopping locally and enjoying our experiences! Thanks to everyone
who voted for us maybe next year!
The Kitchens chef, Pat, has asked me to tell our readers that as of
February 1st he will have a new menu and it promises to be a good one (of
course). Some things will go and be replaced with new ones, and some will
stay. He said there would be a little more seafood along with his fish and

p.m., followed by the 10-minute performances at

7 p.m.
At 11 p.m. the day before, staff and students
will be divided into groups. Each group will receive one prop and one line of text, which will be
the basis for writing, rehearsal and performance
of a 10-minute play.
On Saturday morning at 9 [a.m.], the groups
will reconvene and begin creating their play,
said Maki Van Dyke, school registrar. Some
[groups] will start with writing, others may build
a movement piece, and yet others may improvise
characterizations.
Students have until 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28.
Each group will then be ready to perform a
piece of theatre, complete with plot, characters,
costumes, dialogue and movement, Van Dyke
said.
Doors open at 6 p.m., when audience and
play creators mingle over a silent auction featuring donations of services, B&B stays, art, baked
goods and other items.
The largest item, she added, will likely be Rosebud Theatre tickets and an overnight at a Rosebud bed-and-breakfast.
Seeing all the different plays is like sampling
appetizers, each one short, unique and spellbinding, Van Dyke said. Last year, the plays
spanned a full range of genres and emotions. The
audience was laughing their heads off for one
piece and sat intensely quiet for the next.
Theyd like to raise $9,000, and funds will be
divided equally among students taking the trips.
Besides making the trips more affordable, the
10-minute play creation experience is an awe-

some way for students to create out of their

own strengths, Van Dyke said. Instead of lending their talents to tell someone elses story, the
10-minute play creation allows students to be at
the creative helm of the process, writing their
own work and staging it in a way that they want
to.
And of course, students grow from the theatre
trips themselves.
The theatre trips give students the opportunity to see the best of English-speaking theatre,
and take workshops with professional artists in
different parts of the world, she said. We have
seen the theatre trips be an essential component
to the students personal and artistic growth as
they define their calling.
Play creation tickets are available at the door
for a suggested donation of $10. The performances will be family-friendly, with a suggested age of
seven and up. Silent auction bids can be placed
in person, with some items available for online
bidding through the RSA Theatre Trips Facebook
page. People can also donate at 1-800-267-7553,
at rosebudtheatre.com under Tickets-Donations,
or by mailing a cheque to Rosebud School of the
Arts. Donations of $20 or more are tax deductible. To donate silent auction items, contact Beth
at bethw@rosebudtheatre.com.
Our hope is that at the end of the night, the
audience feels deeply satisfied, having enjoyed
fresh, fun stories, and hopefully walking away
with a silent auction prize, Van Dyke said. We
are confident that all will enjoy themselves. Its
just a super fun thing to do and will lift any postChristmas blues.

Local 4-H club remains busy

KAITLYN STEWART
Cheadle 4-H Club Reporter

Cheadle 4-H had their meeting at Cheadle
Community Hall where we discussed how the
projects were doing on Jan. 10.
In beef, everyone is moving their steers up on
feed and working on halter-breaking them.
In C.O.P, the first project has been completed
and the second and third projects are underway.

Then at the end of the meeting we worked on

our project books.
Cheadle finished 2016 off by holding their
monthly meeting in December at the ag grounds
where they received their record books and diaries. They decided that club communications
would be on March 5 at 1 p.m.
The club members then taped boxes together
for the Christmas Hamper and everyone had
fun.

Wheatland County opposes

forced membership
LISA BASTARACHE
Wheatland County Communications Officer

According to the regulation discussion guide
prepared by Municipal Affairs, it is proposed that
Growth Management Boards be composed of the
large urban municipality (i.e. Calgary or Edmonton), all rural municipalities that are adjacent...
Wheatland County is not, nor has it ever been,
adjacent to Calgary and yet, according to the Alberta Government, it is still being forced into the
Calgary Metropolitan Region growth management board.
We are, first of all, against any type of forced
participation, stated Reeve Glenn Koester. We
have made our position clear with several letters
and discussions with Municipal Affairs.
The most recent communication from Minister Larivee (Municipal Affairs), received Jan. 12,
states ...the intended outcome of the growth
management boards is to ensure that planning
around the largest urban centers in Alberta occurs in an efficient and effective way ... it only
makes sense to also include portions of Wheatland County.
This is unacceptable to Wheatland County and,
according to council, there is concern that they
will lose their ability to determine their own

growth if forced onto the board.

Regarding the voting structure, it is unacceptable that one municipality has the ability to
control the agenda through the double majority
voting model, Koester explained. The Boards
growth and servicing plans will be determined,
based on the planned voting structure, by the
City of Calgary.
There are obviously going to be different perspectives and different needs between rural and
urban groups but, because of population rather
than merit, the concerns of the rural groups will
not be addressed, Koester continued. Even if every rural community that is part of this proposed
Board votes together, the large urban centre (Calgary) has the ability to out-vote them. Add to this
the fact that we will be expected to represent
and speak on behalf of all the small communities
within our borders, but have only one vote. The
individual communities have no vote on their
own, and it is quite clear this is a dictatorship.
Calgary is the only one with enough population
to have any say in the decision-making process.
The next meeting was planned for Jan. 20, and
the County Council sent representatives.
We plan to continue fighting this. In its current form, it is unfair to us and all other rural
participants, said Koester.

Strathmore RCMP remind public

to lock vehicles
CST. DENZIL MOREY
Media Resource Officer, Strathmore RCMP

Strathmore RCMP want to remind residents of
Strathmore and area that leaving your vehicle unlocked makes it an easy target for thieves.
All year long, the RCMP respond to calls of vehicles being rummaged through and items being
stolen. However, with cold winter temperatures,
many people start their cars in the morning to
warm them up, and return to their home to finish
getting ready. This creates a window of opportunity for someone to not only steal valuables from inside your vehicle, but steal the vehicle itself. Very
few of these vehicle incidents reported to police
involve entry to a locked vehicle.
Here are some tips to help you protect your vehicle:
Use/install a remote starter if possible
If you warm up your vehicle while it is unattended, use a second set of keys to lock your
vehicle
Use/install anti-theft tools such as car alarms
or steering wheel locks

Never leave valuables in your car (wallets,

phones, electronics, keys, cash, gifts)
Remove the garage door opener if your vehicle is parked outside
Ensure that items left in your vehicle are
stored out of sight
If possible, make sure your car is parked in a
well-lit area
Develop a routine - when locking house doors
for the night, make it a practice to hit lock on your
key fob as well
Many vehicles with push-button start / keyless fob can easily be driven away once started
(without the key), and it will not be disabled until
it is turned off
These are great reminders that will help protect you and your property, says Staff Sergeant
Kevin ODwyer, Strathmore RCMP detachment
commander, and it will help reduce crime of opportunity in our communities.
Report any suspicious people and activity you
see by calling the RCMP complaint line at 403-9343535, or dial 911 if you need to report a crime in
progress.

Water Softeners, Iron Filters

& Drinking Water Systems

The continuing saga of un-Handy Man!

PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
Before I can regale (good word, eh? and I even
have a PE Degree!) you with a recent screw up in my
attempts to fix things, I do have to provide a little
history.
This is also for Bill, whos never read my column
(ouch), but his wife Margaret has! Almost 30 years
ago, Deb and I bought our first house. We were moving a water bed (yes, that one!) down to the undeveloped basement. To save time and effort, we had removed one end of the wood frame, so we could kind
of fold the other 3 boards. This part went great and
we got everything into the basement. After we got
the platform in the right spot, I re-attached the missing bed board. All I needed now, was for Deb to help
me move it onto the platform. I was not expecting
laughter from her!
Come on, whats so funny just help me carry it
over there and I can attach it, I grumbled.
There was more laughter, followed by more grumbling from me.
I said, look Debbie, uh hah, hah, but just give me
a quick hand carrying it over there then Im fine.
Her only reply was: look where youve built it,
Pat!
Thats when I did indeed, look. I had built the
frame around the basement telepost! There was no
way to move it anywhere! It was hard to recover from
this degree of dumbness (and yes, thats a word!).
So later, when I finally had the platform and frame
together, I filled the bed with water. However, I put
too much water in the bed, and I had to use the same
garden hose to drain out some! So, I sat near the
floor drain, and sucked on the end of the hose to get
the water flow going. Of course, this would also be
the time when Debbie came down to check on me.
I was flustered, and frustrated that I couldnt get the
bed to drain.
Uh, Pat, Deb commented.
What now, Deb look, I just have to drain a little
out its not a big deal, was all I got out.
Uh, Pat dont you have to connect the other
end of the hose to the actual bed?! You cant argue
with the truth, can you?
I told you those stories so that, to tell you this.
When I have to fix, or build something my stress

level rises, because I know there will be problems

that only happen to me!
The latest was what should have been a simple
task. After conning Deb into a new, bigger flat screen,
Breannes boyfriend and I put the feet on the bottom of the TV and lifted it to its new wooden stand.
Thats weird, said Kody.
Of course, I hadnt noticed that the TV had a slight
backward lean. We fiddled, hummed and hawed for
a while, then put it back down on the carpet, to see
if wed put the feet on wrong. Of course, we hadnt,
and we lifted it back. It still had a backward lean,
so because I hate waiting and thinking too much, I
phoned the 1-800 number for advice. After describing badly to a gentleman on the other side of the
world, that my new TV was leaning backward, and
the screen was slightly turned up to the ceiling, I
was met with silence. He said hed if Id just hold,
hed discuss this with the other techs. Now, to me,
this means that hes gone back to his pals to play
back our conversation, and have a good laugh! When
he finally came back, I beat him to the punch.
I bet youve never heard of this problem before,
have you? I asked. No, weve never had this happen yet, was his response.
I knew right there that I had done it again, I just
didnt know how!
So, Debbie came down to see the TVs new, glorious picture, but we had no progress. We explained
the problem, and she instantly went upstairs, only to
return with a level!
Did you guys check to see if the stand is level?
she asked. (Of course, we didnt check to see if the
stand was level who does that?!).
It wasnt level. After about a half hour of fretting,
and an embarrassing call to God knows where, she
solved the problem in seconds! This is another example why I hate any kind of set up.
I never believe it when packaging says: assembly
is easy, and fool proof, because I know it aint
FULE- proof!

teacher, coach, husband and father of two Pat Fule.

POWER OF VISION
Vision is the capacity to see, or the
mental picture of a preferable future.
Vision is one of the most powerful
forces available to man on earth
today. It gives meaning to life and
keeps us alive. The dreams of today
are the realities of tomorrow. In fact,
it is our vision that determines our
destinies.
Where there is no vision, the
people perish: but he that keepeth
the law, happy is he. Proverbs 29:18.
Vision is critical to our existence; it
is the redemptive revelation of God.
True vision is not based on what a
person sees with the physical eyes,
but that which a person sees with
his or her inner mind. Our world
was constructed and maintained by
revelation. A man or woman of vision
would see what God has planned
for him or her even before that thing
comes into physical existence. A
man with no vision could be refereed
to as a living dead man.
When a person has access to
heavens resources and revelation,
such a person adds value to peoples
lives and becomes a preserver
and a saviour of this planet. All
great people in history would have
had a personal vision. With all the
distractions around Joseph, he
held on to his God-given vision of
greatness. He had every reason
to be distracted in the comfort of
his masters house, and by the evil
desires of his masters wife. The

What a show!

harsher life became for Joseph,

the bigger the dreams he had. It
is important that we respond to
adversity with the correct mindset
- Genesis 39. Joseph chose to be
focused on what God had for him in
destiny.
Vision is the basis for progress in
our world because no one makes
progress without first imagining
it. There is a seed of greatness in
every human being and it must be
translated into a vision that must
be pursued. A person with a vision
must also have a plan to achieve
that vision as well as set goals in
line with the vision. The best time to
shape your today is when it is still
in a fluid state and while it is called
tomorrow. By the time tomorrow
becomes today, it is solid, fixed and
difficult to change. You cannot walk
with God and not discuss about the
future because the future is His own
present. How prepared are you to
obey Him? The attitude of a man with
vision will change and that attitude
will then determine his altitude.
Through vision, you can escape your
current reality and get into what God
shows you. Dont not ignore your
God-given vision. Work on it, and
today is a good day to start. Shalom!

Dance studio supports

Hope Bridges
ADELLE ELLIS
Times Reporter

Changes to Albertas gaming and liquor laws means
Expressions the Dance Gallery isnt able to utilize thousands of dollars its parent organization raised working
at a casino in 2016.
As a result, Expressions has donated the monies
$28,577 to Hope Bridges, a non-profit organization
that connects people through art.
We feel so excited and honoured and so fortunate to
be receiving this donation, said Hope Bridges chairperson Sheila Konschuh. We are determined to be excellent stewards of the money
Expressions the Dance Gallery (EDG) is a local forprofit dance studio in Strathmore. Its parent organization, Strathmore Parents Association of Expressions
(SPAE), is a non-profit that handles competition expenses for EDG dancers and raises money through fundraisers and casinos. Due to a change in gaming and liquor
laws, dance groups across Alberta no longer qualify to
raise funds and work at casinos.
The SPAE was notified of this change after working a
casino in May 2016 and raising $28,577. Because they
had already worked the casino before being notified
of the law change, they were given an opportunity to
donate the funds to another non-profit organization of
their choice.
So SPAE made a list of non-profit organizations within
Strathmore who they could donate the money to. After a
first vote and having the Alberta gaming commission accept four possible non-profits to be the recipients of the
money, another vote was held with members of SPAE
in overwhelming support of donating to Hope Bridges.
I work with special needs people and when we were
told we could donate our money from the casino, I suggested Hope Bridges, said Becky Habing, a member of
SPAE.
Our kids (dancers) are well versed in having special
needs kids around and seeing what they do in the community and attending the Hope Bridges Gala and Sing
your High note program, she added. Just to know (this

money) was going to stay in our community and serve

people that they (dancers) knew was a bonus.
Although SPAE does several fundraisers a year, the casino fundraiser was the most efficient in helping dancers
attend competitions. Future plans for SPAE include budgeting and planning better and doing more fundraisers
so that children are still able to compete.
An upcoming fundraiser by SPAE is a St. Patricks Daythemed jellybean dance on Mar. 4 at Westmount School.
Although losing casino rights will create more work
and fundraising for the future, Expressions is thrilled the
money could help someone out and, more importantly,
stay local.
It makes us feel fantastic. We like to give back to our
community and this is one of our ways of giving back,
said SPAE president Christina Walsh. The kids are excited to help out another organization.
The donation by Expressions the Dance Gallery will
help Hope Bridges to continue offering arts programs to
community members.

Brentwood senior choir to perform with RMSO

ADELLE ELLIS
Times Reporter

Brentwood School is well known in the community
for producing incredible choral performances, and
the knowledge of the schools superb music program
is spreading.
The Brentwood senior choir will be presented in
two back-to-back weekend performances with worldrenowned conductors and the Rocky Mountain Symphony Orchestra.
I was first contacted by the conductor of the Rocky
Mountain Symphony Orchestra (RMSO) who asked
if the school would like to sing with the orchestra.
I said yes to that immediately because the kids have
never sung with an orchestra before, said Brentwood
music specialist, Carolyn Steeves. A few days later we
were contacted by Choir Alberta asking us to be one
of the special guest choirs in the Alberta Childrens
Choir Concert.
Steeves immediately surveyed the students parents,
asking for their permission.
The parents were overwhelmingly in support,
said Steeves.
The Brentwood senior choir will sing three songs
at both concerts.
The first concert will take place on Jan. 28 at 7:30
p.m. at the Hope Covenant Church in Strathmore.
Here, the RMSO will perform and the Brentwood senior choir will sing three songs accompanied by the

orchestra. Tickets range between $15 and $50, and

are available at rmso.ca.
The choir will be hearing the music for the very
first time right before the concert, about an hour before, said Steeves.
The second concert, the Alberta Childrens Choir
South Gala Concert, takes place on Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. at
the Knox United Church in Calgary. The Brentwood
senior choir will sing the same three songs, this time
accompanied by a string quartet (two violins, a viola
and a cello) from the RMSO.
These two events are unprecedented in our school
history and the choir is very excited, said Steeves.
STRATHMORE YOUTH JOIN CHOIR
Five Grade 6 Brentwood School students have been
selected to sing in the Alberta Childrens Choir South.
Raygan Johnson, Shaelynn Mckay and Rylee Walstra will be going to the Alberta Childrens Choir (ACC)
for their first time. Emma Moore and Tegan Deloli
will be joining ACC for their second year. These five
students will also be joined by Crowther Memorial
student Zhara Harney, who will be a part of the ACC
for her fourth year.
About 80 students have been chosen for the choir.
For Strathmore music programs to have produced six
exemplary choral students, and Brentwood to have
five of them, is nothing short of impressive.
I think theyll be very prepared and feel confident
when they go to sing. Some of their jitters got taken

Five students from Brentwood school have been accepted into the
Alberta Childrens Choir. These five students will join in singing in
the Brentwood Sr. Choir on Jan. 28 with the Rocky Mountain Symphony Orchestra and Mezzo-Soprano Barbara King at the Hope
Covenant Church in Strathmore. They will also be singing in the
Brentwood Sr. Choir on Feb. 4 at the Alberta Childrens Choir (ACC)
South Gala Concert at the Knox United Church in Calgary. While
at the ACC Gala Concert the five accepted Brentwood students,
along with Zhara Harney from Crowther, will sing seven additional
songs with the Alberta Childrens Choir. Raygan Johnson (-r), Shaelynn Mckay, Rylee Walstra, Emma Moore, Tegan Dololi.

out when they had their first rehearsal and realized

the songs are going to sound nice and that they actually know what theyre doing, said Steeves, who
added that the ACC performance only happens once
a year.

This touching story follows the relationship of two former best friends,
Brooke and Casey, as they enter Grade
7 and undergo a series of changes,
mostly negative, in their friendship,
home life and experiences at school.
Without giving too much away, this
serious and chilling story is full of jealousy, struggles, hurt, victimization and
bullying.
The two main characters share their
stories through script and through a
full set list of dances choreographed to
songs from the popular artist, Adele.
The 25 and 35 dance classes, which
presented the show, top off the performance through many well-rehearsed
dances using ribbons and aerial hoops.
Hometown Glory was created by
SHSs drama and dance teacher, Deanne
Bertsch, who has been teaching and
writing stories for the theatre for 15
years. Throughout her teaching career, Bertsch has helped many students
overcome struggles associated with the
awkward stage that is the junior and senior high age.
There is so much bullying that goes
on in our school and in other schools.
Some of it is subtle where kids dont
feel like they belong somewhere, said

Bertsch. I thought this story could be

healing and helpful, and remind people
to treat each other with kindness.
Last year, Bertsch was approached by
then Grade 11 student, Brooke Paiha,
who told her story of being bullied in
Grade 7 at Crowther by her former best
friend.
Its incredible that Im able to share
this message with younger kids that
bullying needs to stop, said Paiha, adding that after she told Bertsch her story,
she was encouraged to say everything
so that this show could have the greatest impact on the audience and on the
kids in the hopes that it will influence
some other child and that they will
choose a different path.
Casey Tucker, a past student of
SHS and an amazing vocalist, had approached Bertsch last spring about
creating a show to the music of Adele.
Tucker, who also had a hard time while
in school in regards to bullying, came
back for this production to play the antagonist and sing Adele songs.
[This show] hits home to people
who have gone through [bullying] in
their life, whether that be the bully or
the bullied. And we all have been one at
one time or another, said Tucker.
Throughout the plays dance routines,
every dancer wore a pink shirt with
holes.
This represents the victim. Every
single actor was a victim in some sort
of situation, said Bertsch. Even Casey,
the bully, was a victim in her own situation. The holes in the pink shirts represent that we all have holes in the form
of hurt and pain and mess. We are all
dealing with our own thing and every-

one here has a story that will break

your heart.
This story may be full of jealousy and
victimization, but it also tells an impactful story about being brave and treating
others with kindness. It is heartbreaking, but also encouraging, powerful and
heartwarming.
I hope this will give students who
are going through the same kind of
thing some empowerment to stand up
for themselves and be kind to each
other, said Bertsch. It is my hope that
by telling this story, someone will see
themselves in it and will make a positive change in the world.
The play will also be presented at

The Strathmore High Schools 25 and 35 dance
classes put on an original play from Jan. 11-13
called Hometown Glory, which was created by
dance and drama teacher, Deanne Bertsch. The
play was based on true stories from Bertschs
students, basedon bullying in schools in Strathmore and experiences of children in foster care.
Bertsch hopes this story will make students think
twice about bullying and to instead treat people
with kindness.

Rosebud Theatre 2017: All under one big sky

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

Rosebud Theatres 2017 season celebrates the theme
Under a Big Rosebud Sky.
All of us -- refugees, big businesses, small businesses, moms and dads and kids, Muslims, Christians,
atheists, you name it we all live under the same sky,
explained Morris Ertman, Rosebud Theatres artistic
director. If you just kept following that horizon line,
walking toward it, youll find yourself walking around
the world.
The Skin of our Teeth, a Pulitzer Prize-winning play
by Thornton Wilder, opens the season, March 31 to
June 3.
Mr. and Mrs. Antrobus and their two kids, who live
in suburbia, happen to have a pet dinosaur, Ertman
said. The ice [age] is coming and its scooping up
houses on its way. They kick the dinosaur out, and
they bring refugees in. They start to sing Christmas
carols around the fire they make in the middle of the
living room to keep warm. Were going to take chairs
and break them and throw them on a fire on the stage
and sing Christmas carols. Its crazy. But the feeling of
it will be so outrageously inviting, I hope people just
bubble with hope.

The Spitfire Grill, a folk musical by Lee David Zlotoff, runs June 16 to Sept. 2.
This play is saying that three women can change a
community and a world, Ertman said. One is an old
woman who runs a cafe called the Spitfire Grill. She
just wants to retire.
She and two young employees, one of them just out
of prison, plan a contest, inviting people to submit
$100 and a description of the grill. The best description wins the grill.
And of course, Ertman said, if enough people send
their $100 in, shes got her retirement.
An Almost Holy Picture by Heather McDonald comes
to the BMO Studio Stage, June 29 to Sept. 2. Ron Reed
is guest director.
David Snider will play a man whos given up the pastorate, because he grapples with painful events, like
the fact his daughters body is covered with excessive
hair.
Its really a story about prayers and angels and
miracles, and how to make sense of things that are
impossible to make sense of, Ertman said. Its a play
that really, really kind of digs into where people are at
when its not working out really well. This is going to
be a piece that really touches peoples hearts.
The Christians, by Lucas Hnath, will appear on the

Opera House stage, Sept. 22 to Oct. 28. A minister tells

his congregation he doesnt believe theres a hell, after
hearing about a Hindu boy who died after rescuing his
sister from a fire.
This minister cant reconcile himself with a God that
would condemn such heroes [to hell], Ertman said.
So it opens up this rift in this church. Everybodys raving about this play as a turn-the-page, on-the-edge-ofyour-seat drama. It challenges our sensibilities about
what inclusiveness looks like.
The seasons final show is Cariboo Magi by Lucia
Frangione, Nov. 10 to Dec. 23, directed by Paul F. Muir.
Its about four haphazard people, hapless people,
Ertman said. One of them doesnt know who he is. He
doesnt know whether hes Scottish or First Nations.
All of these people wind up coming to the Christmas
story, in a way that makes the Christmas story radically
different than its ever been done before. The whole
story is just crazy funny.
Rosebud Theatre will also host Wingfield on Ice, Feb.
23-25, and The Wheatland Band, Sept. 8. The Theatre
for Young Audiences presents Snow White, March 2-4.
Come to Rosebud, because you know what? Ertman said. Were about the things that are happening
in the world and we have a particular way of looking
at them that says that theres hope.

Rosebud School of the Arts: joys, challenges and growth

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

Rosebud School of the Arts education
director, Paul F. Muir, recently reflected
on 2016 and looking to the year ahead.
One of the highlights, Muir said, was
record-high enrollment for the 20162017 year. Also, in spring 2016, Rosebud School of the Arts (RSA) students
danced a performance of New Blood,
telling the story of Canadas residential
schools.
It was so incredible that Deanne
[Bertsch, director] could do New Blood
here in Rosebud, with Zach [Running
Coyote] at the center, Muir said. At
the end of the show, Chief Yellow Old
Woman stood and talked about the story and its profundity and what it meant
to him and other people from Siksika.
It was also really special that Jeany [Van Meltebeke] could direct the
[spring] student production, Wrinkle in
Time, a show thats been close to her
heart for decades, he added.
Another stand-out in many ways was
being at the Critter Awards and seeing the level of representation of RSA
grads, said Muir.
In May, Muir, numerous RSA graduates and several Rosebud Theatre productions were nominated for Critter
Awards, the nicknamed former Calgary
Critics Awards. Three RSA graduates received awards.
I couldnt have been prouder of our
grads who were nominated and our
grads who won, Muir said, though hes
reluctant to accept credit. I was beaming; I was so proud and gratified.
For Muir himself, a high point was
performing in Rosebud Theatres Outside Mullingar, which earned a Critter

Award Best Actor nomination.

To do Outside Mullingar was just
such an incredible gift, he said. To do
that show, to tell that story and to tell
that story with that cast buoyed me up
week after week, day after day; because
all of us knew how much the audience
loved that story.
Directing Miracle on 34th Street was
another great experience.
It was a joy to direct, Muir said.
Those kids are so great to work with.
It was such a huge show with so many
moving elements elements that had
to come together. That was a challenge
and a joy.
The school faced challenges along
with joys, including the economic
downturn and a couple students unable to continue.
We invest so much that [students]
become like family, Muir said. When
someone leaves for some reason, we
miss them.
It was also a challenge to lose Adam
Furfaro, executive director, and Byron
Linsey, technical director, this fall. But
Muir said, I try to live in a place where
change is good.
One of the most rewarding things
is seeing the growth of the students,
he said. Youll see growth moments
in class; but the culmination of that
growth seems to come at the end of
term, with final presentations from
classes and performance night.
The greatest reward is seeing students create successful careers, he added.
This fall I was going through how
many graduates were working professionally in this field at that time, he
said. The list was long.
Students and staff look forward to

even more in 2017.

This month, RSA hosts its annual
four-day Winter Intensives.
This year, we have a killer combo,
Muir said.
David Smukler, creator of York Universitys voice program and founder
and leader of Canadian National Voice
Intensive, is teaching voice. Peter
Balkwill of Old Trout Puppet Theatre
is teaching Suzuki Movement, an intense and very disciplined and focused
movement practice.
In February, RSA students take their
annual theatre study trips to Canadas
west coast and to London, England,
and Muir will lead this years London
trip. To fundraise, RSA students will
host a 10-Minute Play Creation in January, creating and rehearsing 10-minute
plays in a day.
In spring, Muir will direct the second-year students production.
I had these students in class in their
first year, he said, and now of course
theyve grown a lot. Im really looking forward to working with them in
a show.
In April, Deanne Bertsch will direct a
devised-movement show with first-year
students.
In 2017, RSA is refining its Technical Theatre program, and considering a
twist on the Summer Intensives.
Were going to call it something like
the Rosebud Family Camp, like an immersive theatre training family experience, Muir said. Itll bring people
deeper into what Rosebud is, and the
kind of work that we do.
Muir looks forward to more joyful
challenges at Rosebud Theatre. Hell
act in one show, and direct the Christmas show, Cariboo Magi.

Chiefs nuke
Red Deer

Siksika host Kings game

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter

The Wheatland Chiefs delivered the
perfect birthday gift to assistant coach
Matt Gregory in the form of a convincing win.
The local double-A midget team
blitzed the Red Deer CanPro 9-1 during
South Central Alberta Hockey League
play Jan. 21 at the Strathmore Family
Centre.
For the division-leading Chiefs, it was
the fourth time they scored at least nine
goals in a single game this season.
Its a lot of fun for the coaches,
Chiefs head coach Evan Barlow said,
when asked what it was like to work
with such a talented bunch. For us, we
are just trying to get them to play the
right way as we get them ready for the
next level. By playing the right way, we
have gotten a lot of production out of
them.
The 22-2-2 Chiefs led 5-0 into the second before Red Deer (7-15-4) got on
board. Robert Butterwick, Isaac Benoit
and Chayse Hnatowich all recorded a
pair of goals. Butterwick added three
helpers to finish with five points.
Benoit continues to have a firm
grasp on the league scoring lead. He
also made his debut with the Whitecourt Wolverines of the Alberta Junior
Hockey League Jan. 14 when they
took on the Olds Grizzlys at the Olds
Sportsplex. He didnt record a point in
his debut.
It was a fast-paced, fun game to play
in. Thats definitely where I am aiming
to play next year, said Benoit.
Zachary Suntjens, Adrian Kusu and
Jared Kirkpatrick added singles in the
Chiefs win, while Ty Tarvyd stopped 18
shots in net for his 10th win.
The amount of paperwork needing
to be sorted out following the Chiefs
7-4 victory over the Taber Golden Suns
Jan. 22 at the Taber Community Centre
stands roughly 10 feet high.
The two teams combined for 133
penalty minutes, including 93 of them
tallied in the third period.
Riley Romashenko and Benoit led the
Chiefs with a pair of goals each, while
Kale Clouston, Wacy Sandum and Ryan
Bell each popped one in. In net, Riley
Stovka was required to make 15 saves
in order to pick up his 10th win.

HURRICANES STORM WARRIORS EARLY
A much calmer affair saw the Wheatland Warriors fall
7-4 to the Lethbridge Hurricanes Jan. 22 at the Adams
Ice Centre.
The Hurricanes (12-8-4) jumped out to a 3-0 lead following the first, before Kage Yellowfly netted back-toback snipes in the second. He leads the team with 14
goals and 24 points.
Trailing 6-2, Nolan Bailey and Cole Walker found
their way onto the score sheet as the Warriors (9-14-2)
dropped their fourth-straight match.
The local double-A bantam team will travel to Kinex
Arena in Red Deer to take on the Steel Kings (7-13-3)
Jan. 28. Their next home game goes Feb. 10 when they
host the Lethbridge Hurricanes (12-8-4).
BRAVES BEATEN LATE
The local Wheatland Braves leading scorer gave his
team the lead on a penalty shot with 2:26 to go in the
third, only to see the Central Alberta Selects storm back
in the final minutes.
The Selects trimmed the local double-A peewee team
4-3 Jan. 22 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
After a scoreless first, Nolan Mahussier netted his 11th
on the year from Philip Raycroft and Clye Clayton. Adam
Moore added his second on the campaign from Wyatt
Yule and Clayton in the third. Matthew Dovichak turned
away 21 shots between the pipes.
The Selects improved to 2-19-4.
The Braves (5-16-2) next game is Jan. 27 (7:30 p.m.) at
Hussar Arena when they host the Medicine Hat Hounds
(14-4-4).

The Strathmore Wheatland Kings are Back!

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter

They are taking it back to where it all began.
The Strathmore Wheatland Kings will host the High River
Flyers Jan. 28, 7:30 p.m., at the Deerfoot Sportsplex in Siksika
Nation.
The Kings feature three players from the reserve: Brooker
Pretty Youngman, Kristian Ayoungman and Laval Jerry.
Pretty Youngman and Ayoungman are playing in their final
season of the Heritage Junior Hockey League (HJHL). The
Kings organization thought it would be a poetic way to end
their careers by taking a game back to their homeland.
Those guys have had great careers for us and we thought
this was the perfect way to send them off by bringing a game
to Siksika, said Kings general manager Darcy Busslinger.
The people in Siksika are excited to see the game come to
them. [It] should be a fun night.
Jerry has one more year of eligibility left with the Kings, but
he plans to attend Red Deer College next fall to study kinesiology. His return is unlikely at this point.
All three are in the midst of their strongest HJHL campaigns.
Pretty Youngman leads the team with 41 points (22 goals, 19
assists). Ayoungman sits third in team scoring with 15 goals
and 34 points, smashing his previous career high. Jerry is
third among defensemen with 12 points.
At 13-16-4, the Kings are also experiencing their best season since 2012-2013, when they finished 17-19-1.
Pretty Youngman is a big, lumbering forward who loves to
drive to the net. Ayoungman is a shifty centreman with a great
handle for the puck.
The Deerfoot Sportsplex is about a half hour drive southeast from Strathmore. Many fans make the trip to watch the
Kings home games, and even a few road games.
We all think its an awesome idea. It will be nice to bring
the game to them, said Kings head coach Shadoe Stoodley.
Its important to be able to give back to their community like
that.
Pretty Youngman and Ayoungman have been playing together as long as they can remember. With each game, each
passing shift, the clock on their junior career runs out.
Pretty Youngmans mother, Louise, was instrumental in putting the wheels in motion for the game to come out to Siksika, along with getting Ayoungmans career going.
She is my billet mom and Brooker is like a brother to me.
We played hockey together all the way up. Im very thankful
for everything they have helped me out with to get here, said
Ayoungman.
Playing on the same line, Pretty Youngman couldnt imagine ending his junior career any other way.
To end it at the same place where it all began is pretty
special, said Pretty Youngman.
The Kings took a game out to Siksika years ago. Pretty
Youngman recalls being one of the fans in the packed house.
Ayoungman was unable to attend, but thought it would be
great to play in a similar style game one day.
We expect the rink to be loud and the fans to be excited to
watch us play. Its an awesome idea to have something other
than minor hockey out on the reserve, said Jerry, who lived
in Siksika from ages five to eight.

Kings pick up character win over Stamps

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter

The second period hasnt been the friendliest of
frames for the Strathmore Wheatland Kings this
season, but they used a four-goal surge to power
past the Ponoka Stampeders.
The Kings bounced back from a rough 8-3 loss
Jan. 20 against the Medicine Hat Cubs to tune the
Stamps 7-2 during Heritage Junior Hockey League
action Jan. 21 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
Entering the game with the lowly Stamps (8-223), the Kings owned a minus-18 goal differential in
the second stanza, by far their worst of the three
periods.
But they flipped the script, scoring four times en
route to the blowout.
It seems like if we have been up by a few, we

take our foot off the gas, and if we are down by a

couple, then we get down on ourselves, said Kings
head coach Shadoe Stoodley about their secondperiod troubles. But tonight was different and it
was good to get away from that.
Kody Hammond, Jaks Faris, Cole Busslinger and
Brooker Pretty Youngman all factored in goals in
the second period. Faris snipe at the 4:06 mark
held up to be the winner.
Kings captain Keenan Ogle entered the zone and
shoveled the puck to George Montour. Montour
worked his way to the net, dangling in tight, before
dishing it to Faris standing at the side of the net at
the last second.
I thought he was going to shoot it, claimed
Faris. I saw him come in on the backhand, I wasnt
expecting a pass.

Spartans bball
sweeps Hawks
TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter

The Strathmore High School Spartans senior basketball teams picked up
a pair of wins Jan. 18 when they took
on their cross-town rival, Holy Cross
Collegiate.
In what was a completely different
game from their first meeting, the Spartans senior girls downed the Hawks
72-33.
I thought they played really well,
said Spartans head coach Dion Galandy. They played with desire and it
was a much better game than the first
time we played them.
The Spartans cooked the Hawks 6020 in the Foothills Athletic Council
season opener back on Dec. 6 at the
Strathmore High School gym.
With a couple more games under her
belt, sophomore sniper Jennifer Bautista led the Hawks with 16 points, including three triples.
She is one of the few players on our
team comfortable taking three pointers, said Hawks head coach Brad Everett. She also has the smarts to know
that when they arent falling, to take
the ball inside to try and get easier
shots.
Brianna Kennedy poured in 25
points to lead the 5-1 Spartans and
connected on four three-pointers. Allie Davidson continued her strong play
with 17 points on 12 shots, including
going two-for-two from the land peyond.Kaylin Larson was playing aggressive, getting everyn involved offensivley with six assists and was bombing
three-point attempts, sinking three of
them.
January is a tough month for us to
get going with the holiday break and
the exam break, said Galandy. We
were a little inconsistent, but we will
work on it going forward.
Something the Hawks (1-5) have
been working on is a stronger presence
down low. With two of Everetts players
sidelined with injuries, the burden fell
upon Yulisa Solda, who finished with
six points and nine rebounds, as she
tried to spark the Hawks.
Without Alex (Eygenraam) and
Taryn (Tanton), we knew it was going
to be tough, said Everett. But Yulisa is
improving with every game. She is one
of those players that you only have to
show her, or tell her something once
and she picks it up right away.
Up next for the Spartans is a tournament in Olds running Jan. 27 and
28. For the Hawks, they travel to High
River and take on the Highwood High
Mustangs Feb. 6.
SPARTANS BRUSH BACK HAWKS
In the guys game, the results were
similar: the Spartans walked away with
a resounding victory over a much-improved Hawks squad.
The Spartans opened the game by
drilling five-of-six three pointers, carrying them to the 110-57 victory.
The Hawks struggled against the
Spartans full-court press when they
played earlier in the season. While the
press still had the upper hand against
the Hawks, their freshman shooting
guard Alex Nwoye continued his brilliant play.

Soaring to the rim and knocking

down step-back three pointers, Nwoye
finished with a monster game, leading the Hawks with 30 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and three steals.
He is very confident with the ball
right now, said Hawks head coach
Josh Jalbert. He drives with speed and
he knows how to get to the basket.
He showed some incredible skill with
those step-back threes. Normally, Im
a little hesitant for guys to take those
kinds of shots, but he was shooting
over 50 per cent on those tough threepointers.
He even caught the eye of the opposing coach.
I dont think people realize the degree of difficulty on those shots, said
Spartans head coach Matt Laslo. He
can score the ball in so many ways. Its
incredible what he can do in Grade 10.
Hes only going to get better.
The Hawks (2-4) had good looks, but
couldnt knock them down. In the second half, the defensive rebounding of
the Spartans took over.
We saw how quick [the Spartans]
were moving the ball, and thats something I have wanted to work on, said
Jalbert. And when we get the ball into
our sets, we need to be a little more
patient and let the play develop instead
of rushing our shots.
Landon Osachuk was second on the
Hawks with nine points, while Reid
Jensen and Cordel Steadman ripped
down six boards each.
Both Strathmore-based teams travel
to Black Diamond for their next game.
The Oilfields High School Drillers (0-4)
welcome the Spartans (5-1) Feb. 1 and
host the Hawks Feb. 6.

Bassen finds new home with Bisons

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter

Timing is everything in hockey, from

making a glove save to blasting home
a one-timer on a power play. But for
Foothills CFR Chemicals Bisons centre
Boaz Bassen, timing is the reason hes
still here.
The Bisons build their team by drawing players from around the Calgary
area everywhere from Okotoks to
Drumheller, Airdrie to Nanton but not
typically from Illinois.
Bassen was born and raised in Pekin,
Ill., about a three-hour drive southwest
from Chicago. After jumping through a
couple of hoops and filling out extensive government documents, Bassen
currently lives with his aunt and uncle
in Strathmore.
We dont take or recruit imported
players. There are laws laid out by Hockey Canada from doing so, said Bisons
general manager Wayne Hansen. Give
huge credit to Bo, he put a lot of work in
the summer to make this team off the ice
and we are happy to have him.
Luckily for Bassen, he had family connections in the area. His father, Mark,
grew up in Calgary.
The first step for Bo was for us to
take legal guardianship of him, said
Marks brother Brian. We went through
the courts in Strathmore and we were
granted one year of guardianship. But
that still wasnt enough for Hockey Alberta.
Bassen drove up from Pekin early last
June with his parents and three younger
siblings.
Arrived and unpacked, Bassen still
needed Hockey Albertas approval if he
was to step foot on the ice with the Bisons. He needed Canadian citizenship.
With a Canadian father and American
mother, applying for citizenship was
going to be easier than if he had two

American parents.
Immediately applying, Bassen now
had to play the waiting game.
In the meantime, he began working
out with some of the returning Bison
players off the ice.
Kaden (Hanas) was the first to reach
out to me. Im not sure how he knew
I was here, but we started hanging out
immediately. He really helped me out,
encouraged me to make the team and
drove me around, said Bassen.
Working out with Bisons strength and
conditioning coach Steve Stovka, Bassen
was still waiting into August, when his
siblings were starting school back home.
I was definitely worried about not
getting my citizenship. I thought I would
probably have to go home at some
point, said Bassen, who likes to cook
spaghetti with his mom and play drums
in his dads band at church.
Then, with about three weeks until the
Bisons camp broke, Bassen received his
government documents to the approval
of Hockey Alberta.
But there was still the issue of making
the team.
He was a complete surprise for us.
We didnt know anything about him. I
heard he had been working out with a
few of the guys, but that was about it,
said Bisons head coach Sandy Henry.
There were basically three options for
Bassen: make the Bisons, go try out for
the Calgary Royals and live with his other uncle in Calgary, or head back home.
Luckily everything came together at
the right time, and now Bassen is playing a key role in the middle of the ice
for the Bisons.
I really wanted to come here and play
for the Bisons, he said. Ive heard so
much about the program. I heard how
well the school works with the team and
I really wanted to play in the Macs tournament.
Hockey is in Bassens blood. His fa-

I started using Strathmore Anytime Fitness
around two years ago. I was a casual user
at best, and never used it to the full extent. I
started getting serious around April 6, 2016.
I was 236 pounds and I decided I didnt want
to live that way anymore - I have now lost
45 pounds and am 191 lbs. When I stared
it was very intimidating to show up and try
and get a good workout in, but the staff at
Anytime are some of the best people I have
ever come across. They are welcoming,
warm and anything at all you need, they
are there to help. Having a manager and
frankly, the people that use the gym that are
so welcoming and helpful was a huge help
to me. I would highly recommend anyone
to use Anytime Fitness. Anyone can do it.
If you do your part, Anytime will do its part
and the results you see will be life changing.

ther played for the Calgary Flames in

the Macs AAA Midget Hockey Tournament as a kid, before going on to play
in the AHL for the Peoria Rivermen and
Hershey Bears in the early 1990s, and
for five different teams in the Deutsche
Eishockey Liga from 1994-2000.
His grandfather Hank Bassen played
in the NHL from 1954-68. His cousin
Chad Bassen played for the UFA Bisons
in the 1999-2000 season and scored 37
points.
The Bisons just wrapped up their
Macs tournament experience with a
strong run into the semifinals. Bassen
scored the game winner on the power play and chipped in with an assist,
when he was named player of the game
Dec. 27 in the Herds 4-1 clipping of the
Alaska Oilers at the Max Bell Centre #1.
He would go on to add another goal,
finishing with three points.
It was a great experience to play in
front of that many fans. These teams are
a lot more skilled and physical from the
teams that I am used to playing, said
Bassen, who was a member of the 16U
Peoria Junior Rivermen in the Central
States Developmental Hockey League
last season.
This year, he has registered five goals
and six assists in 25games, as Henry
continues to use him in a variety of
roles.

He is responsible; he plays on the

high side of the puck. He is a defensive
centre with great offensive potential,
said Henry. Hes a really likable guy
whos easy to be around.
Living in a different country has had
its challenges for Bassen. He missed
American Thanksgiving and Christmas
with his parents. Not to mention his
Chicago Cubs winning the World Series
for the first time in 108 years.
I try to call home at least every second day, said Bassen. It was weird at
first when I got here, but it was nice to
have family to help with the transition
and the team treats me just like anyone
else in the locker room.
With a break in the schedule from the
end of the Macs until the team resumed
action Jan. 6, Bassen was able to sneak
home for four days. It was the first time
he saw his parents and siblings since
September. Enjoying his time at home,
he also took in Team USA edging Team
Canada in a shootout during the World
Junior Hockey Championship.
Playing in his last year of midget
hockey, the future presents another
great question for Bassen: where to
next? Whether its playing junior hockey
somewhere in Canada or playing for a
scholarship back home, he will be no
stranger to adjusting in his new surroundings once again.

Billet Appreciation Night

The CFR Chemical Bisons hosted their Billet Appreciation Night after their Jan. 22 game versus the Calgary Northstars. The Bisons invited all family and billets to the ice after their 6-1 win to make a special
presentation.

Bisons blister
Northstars on
billet night
TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter

Blake Wells injected instant offence
when he made his long-awaited return
to the Foothills CFR Chemicals Bisons
lineup.
Wells netted the winner as the Bisons smacked the Calgary Northstars
6-1 during billet appreciation night at
the Strathmore Family Centre on Jan.
22.
Today we won for more than just
ourselves, we won for our billet families as a way to say thank you for everything they have done for us this
year, said Wells.
The Bisons (21-4-3) avenged their
5-4 loss to the Northstars (12-13-2)
on Dec. 21 in Calgary. Following the
dusting, the players presented roses
to their family members in attendance
and to their billet family members.
For Wells, it was his first game in
nearly a month. He has been sidelined
with an upper-body injury since the
second game of the Macs AAA Midget
Hockey Tournament. Before he got
hurt, he was tied for the team lead in
goals and points.
Hes a big impact guy for us. Hes
fast and strong, and our lineup changes with him in it, said Bisons head
coach Sandy Henry. We are glad to
have him back.
Tyson Teretta did a great job sliding
over to the boards to keep the puck
in the offensive zone. He wired a pass
over to d-man Tyler Strath, who found
captain Brett Trentham in the slot.
Three Northstars and the goalie suctioned out to Trentham, who looked
like he was going to shoot, but he
made the extra pass, spotting Wells at
the side of the net for the tap-in with
8:10 remaining in the first.
It feels great to be back with the
boys. Ive been thinking about my first
game back for the past month, said
Wells.
The Bisons also saw the return of
centre Boaz Bassen, but also learned
earlier in the week that leading scorer
and Victoria Cougars prospect Tarun
Fizer will be out for the considerable
future with an upper-body injury.
Any time you take the leading

scorer out of a lineup, it changes it.

But I am confident that we still have
enough goals in this lineup to get the
job done, said Henry.
Winger Zach Huber netted a pair of
goals during the first and second period. Having a great nose for the net,
he scored his first on the power play
on a nifty no-look pass from Jackson Salt and the second came from a
great forecheck by Brandon Machado.
Huber now leads the Alberta Midget
Hockey League with seven power play
tallies.
I just keep reminding myself that if
you go to the net, youre going to get
rewarded for it, said Huber. Tonight,
I had a couple bounces go my way and
I was able to take advantage of that.
Machado was filling in for Peyton
Krebs on the Herds top line, while
Krebs was away playing three games
with the Kootenay Ice. Krebs scored
his first WHL goal, recorded three assists and was named the number one
star during a 6-3 win over the Prince
Albert Raiders.
Machado added his 12th goal and
Tyson Scott wired home his sixth later
in the second. Kaden Hanas found the
back of the onion bag from the top of
the slot on the power play in the third.
The Bisons took 28 penalty minutes
and finished the game without allowing a power play goal, thanks to the
stellar play of the leagues leader in
save percentage, Hunter Young (.940).
He also stopped Logan Heimann on
a penalty shot with 3:15 remaining in
the third.
Hunter was real good again tonight.
He had the frame of mind that they
were going to have to make one hell of
a shot to get it past him, said Henry.
Our goaltenders have been brick
walls this year. It doesnt matter if it
is Ben [Laidlaw] or Hunter in net, they
make big saves when we need them to
and keep the momentum going, said
Huber.
The Bisons hit the road this weekend and travel to Lethbridge to take on
the Hurricanes (7-17-3) at the Nicholas
Sheran Ice Centre. The Bisons will also
battle the Calgary Buffaloes (20-3-4)
for first place in the Chrysler division
Feb. 1 at Cardel Rec South Arena.

In an effort to bring you closer to the action, the Strathmore Times Netcam was installed during the
CFR Chemicals Bisons home game versus the Calgary Northstars on Jan. 22. The Bisons dominated
from start to finish en route to a 6-1 win during their annual Billet Appreciation Night.

Montour, Matt Thomson and Brenden
Moore finished with two assists each.
Everyone played great tonight. I
could have sent anybody out there at
any point and felt great about it, said
Stoodley. That was a big character win
after last nights game.
One night earlier, the Cubs (7-21-6)
used a four-goal second period and saw
a stretch of six consecutive goals to sink
the undisciplined Kings. The Kings (1316-4) racked up 83 penalty minutes and
one ejection as the Cubs went five-for-14
on the man advantage.
We werent ready from the drop of
the puck, said Stoodley. It was a step
backwards and, all in all, a bad game.
Thankfully, the Kings reverted to their
old ways from earlier this season, when
they would bounce back with a win after a difficult loss.
We dont like being walked over like
that, said Faris. This win gives us a
boost moving forward as we get ready
for playoffs.

notching his first hat trick with 25 seconds remaining in the third and it
wasnt via an empty net gimmie, either.
Ive been with him for the past three
years now and he has a top-notch work
ethic, said Stoodley. If he keeps working out there, he is going to continue to
get open and those pucks are going to
keep going in.
Kings number one netminder Brady
Hoover has been out with a lower-body
injury for a few weeks now. He is set to
resume skating soon, but Stoodley and
his staff are urging him not to rush back.
In the meantime, Indiana Kelly
bounced back from a rough Cubs game
to make 34 stops as he picked up his
fourth win.
With only five games remaining in the
regular season, the Kings cannot climb
any higher in the standings. At best, they
will finish fourth in the southern division and host a first-round, best-out-ofthree series. The Banff Academy Bears
sit 10 points back of the Kings with two
games in hand.
The Kings will host the High River
Flyers (8-24-2) Jan. 28 (7:30 p.m.) at the
Deerfoot Sportsplex in Siksika Nation.
The Kings decided to treat the fans from
Siksika and honour two of their graduating players, Pretty Youngman and
Ayoungman, with a game in their hometown before their junior career ends.
The Kings are 2-1 against the Flyers
this season, and grounded them 6-4 on
Jan. 13 at the Bob Snodgrass Recreation
Complex.
The Kings will play their final Tuesday
night game of the year, when they host
the Bears Jan. 31 at the Strathmore Family Centre. Puck drop is scheduled for
8:30 p.m.

MEMORIAMS

Obituaries
CHRISTENSEN,

Deborah-Ann (Debi)
It is with deep sadness that we announce the very sudden passing of
our dear wife, mother and Gramma,
Debi Christensen (nee Rolfe) on Thursday January 19,
2017 at the age of 62. Debi was born in Edmonton,
spent some time in Houston, Texas with her family
and eventually settled in Calgary. After graduating
high school, she pursued a career in nursing. A committed city girl, she met Barry Christensen and they
married in 1978. They moved to the homestead farm
near Carseland in 1981. She transformed into an eager farm girl, raising two children and eventually a
herd of about 50 Black Angus cattle. Since selling the
cattle a few years ago, she enjoyed crochetting and
knitting, spending time with the grandkids and relaxing a few weeks each winter in Maui. She especially
enjoyed having morning coffees with her very close
friend Janet. Debi is survived by her loving husband
Barry; son Douglas (Megan), grandsons Kristian and
Simon; daughter Joanna (Tyler); father Keith Rolfe
(Angela) of Sydney, BC; brother Jay Rolfe (Margaret)
of Victoria, BC and numerous other relatives. She
was predeceased by her mother Anne Rolfe in 1991.
A celebration of Debis life will take place on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Lord of All Lutheran Church
(Strathmore) at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations
may be made directly to the Epilepsy Association of
Calgary (4112 - 4 St. NW, Calgary, AB T2K 1A2) or
(www.epilepsycalgary.com) in her memory. To send
condolences, please visit Debis obituary at www.

CARPENTER CASEY,
Marie

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Marie Carpenter

Casey on January 21,2017. She leaves
behind her loving children, Anthony
(Laurie) Darlene (Andy) Debbie (Lyle)
Brian (Loretta) Bob. Her grandchildren
Bonnie (Gord), Quentin (Rochelle) AJ
(Megan) Cassondra (Tim) Darrell (Tara)
Cristen Jennifer Kendra (Ryan) & Coleman. She has 6 Great Grandchildren as well. Her life
began on April 6 1942 in Grimsby, Ontario and her
happiest days were spent in her Grandparents home
on the Six Nations Reserve. Mom proudly received
her Native Status late in life. However, in 1967 with
4 children and her German Shepard dog she boarded
a train to head west to Strathmore Alberta to join her
husband and begin a new life. A stay at home mom
in those first few years, she soon was the house
where all the kids hung out at. She began babysitting
many kids throughout the years. Marie made many
life long friends in this little town. She loved volunteering her time to Brownies, Scouts, Strathmore
Rodeos, Parades and Seniors. She was a founding
organizer for Block Parents in the early 80s . Marie
spent many hours helping seniors from Sunset Haven
over the years. Always putting others needs before
hers. She loved to crochet, knit, bake , play pranks,
suntan, snorkel and ELVIS. Humor was prevalent in
her life and we can still see that smile and hear that
laugh. With only a grade 9 education and went back
to school and obtained her High School Diploma at
the age of 51. A proud moment in her life. Dog sitting
by far became the most loved job she ever had, which
kept her busy the past 10 years. Maries health was
over taken by COPD and became very difficult in the
past year which caused her much pain and frustration. She is now in the Heavens with her loving brothers and friends. At Maries request there will be no
Funeral Service and in lieu of flowers please send a
donation to Animal Care Centre of Strathmore.
