INTERNET TECHNOLOGIES and TERMINOLOGIES
Packet Switching - a mode of data transmission in which a message
is broken into a number of parts that are sent independently, over
whatever route is optimum for each packet, and reassembled at the
destination.
Virtual Private Network (VPN) - a method employing encryption to
provide secure access to a remote computer over the Internet.
Extranets - an intranet that can be partially accessed by authorized
outside users, enabling businesses to exchange information over the
Internet securely.
Worldwide Web - is an information space where documents and other
web resources are identified by Uniform Resource Locators (URLs),
interlinked by hypertext links, and can be accessed via the Internet.
Websites - is a collection of related web pages, including multimedia
content, typically identified with a common domain name, and
published on at least one web server.
Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) - is an application protocol for
distributed, collaborative, hypermedia information systems.
Uniform Resource Locator (URL) - is the global address of
documents and other resources on the World Wide Web.
Homepage - or a start page is the initial or main web page of a
website or a browser. The initial page of a website is sometimes called
main page as well.
Internet Address - uniquely identifies a node on the Internet. Internet
address may also refer to the name or IP of a Web site (URL).
o Email address - identifies an email box to which email messages
are delivered. A wide variety of formats were used in early email
systems, but only a single format is used today, following the
standards developed for Internet mail systems since the 1980s.
o Website or URL address - an Internet address (for example,
http://www.hmco.com/trade/), usually consisting of the access
protocol (http), the domain name (www.hmco.com), and
optionally the path to a file or resource residing on that server
(trade).

o IP address - a unique string of numbers separated by periods that

identifies each computer using the Internet Protocol to
communicate over a network.
Top-level Domain (TLD) names - is one of the domains at the
highest level in the hierarchical Domain Name System of the Internet.
The top-level domain names are installed in the root zone of the name
space.
Protocols - a set of rules governing the exchange or transmission of
data between devices.
o Internet Protocols
TCP/IP - is a standard that defines how to establish and
maintain a network conversation via which application
programs can exchange data.
FTP - is a standard network protocol used to transfer
computer files between a client and server on a computer
network.
o Mail protocols - is an Internet standard for electronic mail (email)
transmission.
o Security protocols - is an abstract or concrete protocol that
performs a security-related function and applies cryptographic
methods, often as sequences of cryptographic primitives.
Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) - a standardized system for
tagging text files to achieve font, color, graphic, and hyperlink effects
on World Wide Web pages.
