Cold room is a walk in refrigerated storage facility where large

quantity of food and non-food items are stored. A large variety of
items are stored in cold room such as fruits and vegetables, eggs,
meat, fish, dairy products, frozen foods, vaccines, chemicals, etc.
Some storage items such as fruits and vegetables are alive even after
harvesting hence proper humidity along with required temperature
must be maintained in cold room in order to avoid deterioration of
food items.
Cold rooms are made up of prefabricated, modular wall, ceiling and
floor panels. Floor panels may not necessarily be with external panel
skins.

LAS Cold-room panels are made in foamed in place process where

in polyurethane foam (PUF) Is injected between two external skins
under pressure. Eccentric cam and lock arrangement is provided in
PUF panels during production.

Basic requirements of cold room

1. Cold rooms in open spaces should be constructed above ground
level
2. Floor should be properly leveled before installation of the panels.
Also , it is preferable to have concrete flooring for cold room
installation
3. Whenever cold room is installed in open space, it should be
covered with shed to protect from rains, dust, heat, etc.
4. Cold room and condensing unit in particular should be in well
ventilated area
5. For large cold rooms, ceiling panels should be supported to
ceiling with the help of wires, rods to transfer panel weight to the
ceiling structure
6. For freezer cold rooms, doors frame with heating arrangement
should be installed
7. Cold room door lock should have internal safety release provision

8. Dual refrigerated system with adequate power backup is

recommended for cold rooms with critical storage items like
vaccines, flavors, etc.
9. Cold rooms should be equipped with temperature display unit
with high and low temperature alarm

Cold Room Installation Procedure

1. Set out room dimensions and draw construction lines on the
floor with the help of chalk/marker
2. Install base C-channels on the construction lines
3. Ensure that C-channels are properly installed in perfect
squarish or rectangular pattern
4. Ensure that difference in opposite corner to corner
measurement should not be more than 2mm
5. Once laying of c-channels is over, fasten channels with bolt
fasteners to the floor
6. Start wall panel errection work with erection of corner panels
and join wall panels to the corner panels by cam lock
arrangement
7. After wall panel errection is over, complete errection of door
panel

8. Erect ceiling panels once wall panel installation is completed

9. Laydown floor panels which are generally without external
skins
10.Apply layers of concrete after flooring panels are installed
followed by kota or tiling on floor
11.Install evaporating unit (IDU) on the ceiling panels
12.Install condensing unit (CDU) on the stand outside in a well
ventilated area
13.Install piping connecting IDU and CDU
14.Install Electrical panel along with wiring of the equipment
15.Perform leak testing of the refrigerant piping and equipment
by charging nitrogen gas followed by vacuum test.
16.Thereafter charge the refrigeration system with refrigerant
Installation and Commissioning of cold room and refrigeration
equipment should be done by authorized person only.
