Citizenship is the beginning of a

new journey, Senator Jane Hume said,
who helped celebrate Australia Day in
Moorabool with an awards and citizenship
ceremony, alongside 250 residents and
special guests.
Moorabools Ambassador Ian Coutts told
the crowded public hall audience that he
grew up in Kaniva and you have a sense
of community in rural Victoria; you dont
get that in the city.
Mr Coutts said isnt it great we now
celebrate Australia Day on the day?
It used to be just a long weekend. Now
kids wave the flags and are starting to
celebrate.
We must continue to work together as a
family, as a community and as a Nation.
We all shape this great Country.
It is a great time to reflect what this means
to you, the new citizens and the recipients
of the awards.
Citizenship is an important step in calling
this country home. You are community to
this Country, Mr Coutts said.
Mayor David Edwards said in his
workplace the department consists of
people with vastly different cultures and
backgrounds.
In fact I am one of only two people in my
section who were born in Australia.
Mr Edwards said like its people, Australia
is a diverse place and we need not go any
further than Moorabool to experience that
diversity.
The open grass lands of Parwan, the
mountain ranges of the Werribee and
Lerderderg Gorges, the flood plains of
Bacchus Marsh, the magnificent Lal Lal
Falls, the red soil of Bungaree, Wallace and
Warrenheip. The list goes on, he said.
The celebrations started with a free
breakfast cooked by the Lions and Rotary
clubs, the presentation of Australia
Day Awards and 28 new candidates
participating in a Citizenship Ceremony at
Emma and Charles Betts became new Australian Citizens on Australia Day, along with 26 other people. Senator Jane Hume, the Bacchus Marsh Public Hall.

Young protectors

By Kate Taylor
Five young Moorabool residents have had their bravery
recognised with the local
Young Citizens of the Year
Award.
The recipients are Natasha
Ford, Tristan Mair, Brady
Dunne, Anthony Young and
Matthew Wetherall.
Each young person trained
as an Elaine Junior CFA
Member in District 15, and
was nominated as a group

because of their commitment to protecting their

community during the
Scotsburn fires in 2015.

They had only just completed their recruitment training a couple of months prior
to the fire but the group
stayed calm and focused on
what had to be done, while
working as little as 100m
from the main blaze.
They displayed exceptional team work, communica-

tion and courage and saved

a number of properties as
a result, read the groups
nomination.
The December 19 fire occurred before last years
Australia Day Awards, but
after nominations had been
closed.
Russell Ford not only
trained the group, but is also
the father of one of the recipients Natasha Ford.

Its really fantastic for the

kids to get this, they really

did a lot of hard work when
the fire was on, said Mr
Ford, who is the Buninyong
Group Comms Officer.

Seedless Watermelon 79c kg (whole)

Clingstone Peaches $1.99 per kg

Theyd all just turned 16

- normally when they join
the brigade, they gradually
work their way into it, but
they got thrown in the deep
end because of the fire at the
time.
Theyre really rapt to be
recognised.

A shotgun stolen from a rural Ballan property in December
last year has been recovered by Purana taskforce detectives.
The theft of the weapon has been linked to the illicit drug
trade and its acquisition by an alleged drug trafficker
continues to be investigated.

Two men have been interviewed as a result of two separate

incidents during which a fire was lit in the open. In both cases,
the men, who reside in Ballan and Greendale respectively,

attempted to burn accumulated refuse on their properties.

In one case, a quantity of toxic plastic substances was burnt.
Both men will appear on summons for lighting a fire in the
open during Moorabool Shires fire restriction period, which
does not conclude until May 1, 2017.

A number of burglaries have occurred from rural sheds

throughout the month of January, prompting a warning to
farmers to secure their sheds and, if going away, removing
items of value or disabling them so they cant be removed.

Number one event

By Kate Taylor
It makes for a strange story, but the Literacy
Trail has won Moorabool Shire Councils
Australia Day Award for Community Event
of the Year despite council announcing after
last years trail that it would be the events
final one.
Despite the council-run event receiving
council-awarded recognition, it was not a
council decision to end the award-winning
event.
Funding for the event has been cut it was
funded under the Best Start Program with
state government money, but a review saw
the government decide that the funds should
instead be spent on services for families and
children experiencing significant challenges.
The cost of staging the literacy trail annually
is more than $70,000 but the event is
extraordinarily popular, with more than 1500
kids attending last years event.
The event brings together local businesses,
emergency services, community groups,
health and welfare organisations, schools,
kindergartens, playgroups and the general
public, all with the shared goal of educating
our young children about the importance of
reading, writing and numeracy, read the
nomination for the event.
(it) relies heavily on the good will of many
in our community to ensure the whole town is
engaged in the event. Many people give their
time, creativity, expertise and resources the
Best Start Literacy Trail Event is a community
working together to support our kids.
The invitation remains open for local groups
or organisations to take over the operation of
the Literacy Trail, which was held for the past
10 years and alternated between the main
streets of Ballan and Bacchus Marsh.

A woman has been convicted and fined after

an alcohol fueled crash near Melton last year
that left two people injured.
Susan Sullivan-Stevens pleaded guilty to
charges relating to the July 16 incident at
around 5pm following a witness noticing her
erratic behavior.
The Bacchus Marsh court heard that witness
questioned her after veering across multiple
lanes on the Western Highway, her excuse
being that she was trying to find the exit for
Melton.
She then continued driving along the
highway, while on her phone, where multiple
witnesses observed her swerving and
speeding along the road.
It was alleged she then crashed into the
back of a blue VW Golf spinning the car 180
degrees before it collided with the side wire
barrier.
Both lanes ended up blocked as police arrived
at the scene and observed Mrs SullivanStevens staggering outside the vehicle.
She was taken to hospital and her blood
analysed for alcohol where a reading of 0.105
was recorded, putting her over the zero limit
for a learner driver.
Newly appointed Magistrate Ronald Saines
rebutted suggestions from the defence
that the accused should be let off with an
adjourned undertaking.
I reject that, its highly inappropriate.
Youre lucky you havent caused anyones
death, he said
Sullivan-Stevens was convicted on all counts
relating to the offences and lost her license for
18 months as well as being fined $2500.

An estimated $1.5 million
worth of illegal tobacco has
been seized from a Pentland
Hills property.
The illicit plants, spanning
approximately four acres,
were located on Tuesday
(January 17) following a warrant executed by the Australian Taxation Office as part of
an ongoing investigation.
Victoria Police also seized
a loaded firearm and

ammunition.
ATO Deputy Commissioner, Michael Cranston said
illegally grown tobacco took
money outside Australias
tax system and into the
pockets of criminals.
That loss of excise is a loss
for the Australian community, he said.
The growth of tobacco has
been illegal in Australia
since 2006 and there have
been no commercial tobacco

licenses granted by the ATO
since that time.
Mr Cranston said those
that break the law would be
brought to account.
The ATO collaborates with
partner agencies to stamp
out criminal activity - if
you engage in it, you will be
caught.
A spokesperson for ATO
Media said although there
has been no arrests, investigations were still ongoing.

Bailed despite risk

By Jessica Howard

A man accused of handling close

to $100,000 in stolen goods has been
released on bail, again.
Shaun Taylor, of Ballan, appeared
in Ballarat Magistrates Court on
Thursday (January 19).
He faces charges of handling stolen
goods and is already on bail after
previously being charged with theft
and a number of drug and weapons
offences.
The local residents first run-in with
police is alleged to have occurred
on July 25 last year after a bank
repossessed his home.
Police attended the Ballan property to
assist in removing items from the house

when 1.39kg of cannabis and an $8000

stolen record collection was located.
Taylor was arrested and bailed,
however in a court appearance on
November 24 he faced a number of
fresh charges including handling
stolen goods and failing to answer bail
on more than 20 occasions.
Magistrate Andrew Capell refused
bail and remanded Taylor in custody
until December 9.
Taylor appeared on this date via
video-link.
Senior Detective at Moorabool CIU,
Joshua Coy told the court that Taylor
had a number of substantial debts and
was homeless with no real income.
He said Taylor committed offences in

order to survive.

However, defence lawyer, Mike

Wardell said there was no direct
evidence that linked his client to the
theft of the stolen goods.

Taylor was subsequently granted

bail on a $3,000 surety despite the
prosecution arguing he was an
unacceptable risk and a danger to
the safety of the public.
He reappeared in court on January
19, where Mr Wardell sought a
further adjournment while the case
was prepared for a consolidated plea
hearing.

Magistrate Saines accepted the

application and the case is adjourned
until February 14.

Buyers across the state are

increasingly looking for
homes that offer great indoor and outdoor living,
with a swimming pool an
opportunity to add value to
a property.
Exactly how much value
a pool adds depends on a
range of factors, such as
property type, landscaping and garden size. Family
homes with pools are likely
to be the most attractive to
buyers, more so than smaller
properties that appeal to
downsizers.
Location is also critical as
the hot weather can extend
by more than a month at the
start and end of summer,
especially in the warmer
parts of the state such as
the Mallee, Northern Country, North-East and the
Wimmera.
While a pool can provide
monetary advantages at sale
time, there are important
aspects to consider before
installing a pool.
Look for a pool design that
suits your backyard and
doesnt overwhelm your garden. Pools should complement a property, rather than
take attention away from it.

They are often considered

statement pieces and should
add aesthetic value.
Many pools are now almost
an extension of the house,
making them visible from
living rooms and other areas
within the home. Pools are
now available in different
shapes and sizes, making
them suitable for regional
areas where blocks are decreasing in size.
Another factor to consider
is if the project will overcapitalise your home. This
is where advice from your
local real estate agent on
comparable homes in the
area with and without a
pool - can assist.
Its also important to be
aware of all the relevant
standards and regulations
that apply to installation, especially in the area of safety.
This is vital, as owners need
to ensure pool fences are of
the highest quality and meet
all local and state standards
particularly if the property
is being rented out.
For buyers looking to purchase a home with a pool,
the selling agent will be able
to provide you with the Section 32 statement, which will
highlight whether the pool
is compliant with council
regulations.
Meanwhile, if you are selling your home, a neglected
pool can be an eyesore. So
ensure your pool is vacuumed, the water clean, and
clear of leaves and other
debris.
Just like your home, the
presentation and maintenance of your pool will go
a long way to determining
how much of an asset it is
when it comes time to sell.

scored an impressive 28-18 win, whilst Dino Borattos rink
had to settle for a draw, giving Avenue three points.
Ben Goulds rink finished strongly to go down by a mere six
shots. Steve Sullivans rink took an early lead in their match,
but were overrun by the opposition in the last 7 ends to lose
by 14 shots.
Final score Avenue 87 lost BMS 97
Division 2 v Central Wendouree
Scores were fairly even in the pre-afternoon tea session,
with Central Wendouree holding a 4-shot margin at the
break. Glenys Kays rink, comprising entirely of ladies, held
their own for much of the day, only to lose 4 shots on the last
2 ends to go down by a solitary shot.
Final score Avenue 74 lost Central Wendouree 106
Division 5 v Midlands Golf
Ray Humphreys rink had a strong 11 shot win, with Di
Hardiments rink storming home to win by 8 shots. Narrow
losses to Peter Kays rink and Dave McKendricks rink (2 and
4 shots respectively) mattered little to the overall result that
saw Avenue get home by 13 shots.

Darley Cricket
By Shaun Kelly
Seniors
The Darley Lions have fallen short in their quest to lock
down a top-four spot in the
BCAs First XI competition.
Chasing Wendourees 4/307,
the Lions batted their full 80
overs but could only manage
8/223 to fall to third place on
the BCA ladder, just a game
clear of fifth-placed Golden
Point with three rounds of
competition left.
Aside from a 61-run second
wicket partnership between
Lachie Herring (38) and Jake
Wilkie (31), the Lions struggled to build partnerships,
losing 4/21 in the middle order after the second-wicket
partnership was broken, and
whilst Hayden Jamieson,
who top scored with an unbeaten half-century, and David Hoey (22 not out) combined for an unbeaten 64 run
ninth-wicket
partnership,
the damage had already
been done as the Lions were
defeated by 84 runs.
The Lions Second XI almost
pulled off their first win for
the season, being dismissed
for 186 in their quest to chase
down Burrumbeets 208.
After starting the day on
4/31, captain Marcus Ingvorsen started the day on
11, finishing the day on 98
no, just two runs shy of a
well-deserved century, A 55
run overnight fifth wicket

partnership with Jamie McKerrow (31) and 53 run sixth

wicket partnership with
Beau Jamieson (28) had the
Lions thinking of victory,
and when Brendan Densley joined Ingvorsen late to
move the score to 8/181, the
Lions still had a sniff, but
when Densley was trapped
LBW, followed shortly by
Ryan Densley being run out,
the Lions finished the day 22
runs short, but with renewed
optimism for the final three
games of the season.
Darleys Third XI hung on
in a cliffhanger to defeat
Coronet City by just one
wicket.
The Lions started the day
on 3/60 and were looking
good with the score on 8/230
chasing Coronet Citys 232
with Andrew Kannar set at
the crease, but when Josh
Fitzgerald was dismissed for
10, it left the Lions with three
runs still needed for victory
and just one wicket to get,
with youngster Jye Stephenson, more known for his
bowling prowess, coming to
the crease. Thankfully for
the Lions, they were able to
find the three runs required
for victory before Kannar
was dismissed for a matchwinning 44 as the last wicket
with the score on 233, giving
the Lions their first win for
the season.
The Lions Fourth XI also recorded an impressive win in
their one-day match against
Napoleons/Sebastopol, lifting them into the top four.
The Lions batted first and
amassed 4/223 in their innings, led at the top by a 105run opening stand between
captain Darren Hynes (46)
and Tim Gallagher, who batted beautifully before being

Sport

dismissed late in the day for

a brilliant 98, setting the opposition a mighty score to
chase.
Despite Darleys large total,
things got a bit tight towards
the end of the innings, with
Napoleons/Sebastopol batting out their 40 overs for
the loss of just three wickets,
but falling six runs short of
victory, with their innings
closed on 3/217.

Juniors
The Darley Lions 16 & Under cricketers have continued their mid-season surge
of form, returning from
their Christmas break to record their third consecutive
Ballarat Cricket Association
victory.
The Lions travelled to Ballarat to take on Napoleons/
Sebastopol and after winning the toss, batted first in
their one-day encounter to
record an impressive score
of 4/162 from their allotted
25 overs. Joel Cadman and
Mitch Ward both made halfcenturies before retiring,
with Jordan Monaghan supporting them well with 26.
Na p o l e o n s/S e b a s t o p o l
started their innings well,
and looked set for a chase
until first-change bowler
Aaron Cadman came on to
bowl. In his five over spell,
Cadman took five wickets
to bowl Darley to victory,
returning figures of 5/15 as
the Lions held Naps-Sebas to
6/90 off their allotted overs.
Both of Darleys 14 & Under teams claimed walkover wins, with Napoleons/
Sebastopol forfeiting against
Darleys 14 & Under First
XI and East Ballarat doing
likewise against the Lions
Second XI.

RESIDENT TESTIMONIALS
We love our quality
affordable new home.
Our Lifestyle Consultant
and Village Managers
were so helpful and
supportive. The terms
were clear, transparent
and there were no surprises. We have
never regretted our decision.
We have a great Community and facilities
including the vegetable gardens and gym.
Everybody is so friendly. We are not in
each others pockets but only seconds
away if needed. We like to be involved
and I Lyn enjoy running our singing
group - supported by our Grand Piano
in our amazing Community Centre while
Dale likes to manage the Club Bar. We
have a clear path for both our futures.
