How to use alpha twisters in


the classroom/weekly plan

1)
-if you have a day that is devoted to
handwriting or phonics review this packet can be used
during morning work time. Copy the pages for each
student or copy the pages weekly and place them in a
folder or binder.
2)
-during a poetry study or unit, you can
use these pages to help students understand the concept
of alliteration.
3)
-focus on the capital letter at the
beginning of each sentence, spaces between each word, and
ending punctuation.
4)
within each sentence ask students to review word wall
words, word families, or chunks that have been introduced.
Are any of the words unfamiliar to the students? Use this
time to discuss the meaning and practice using it in the
correct form.
5)
-introduce each "alpha twister" at the
beginning of each week, and review each day. At the end
of the week allow students to read their "alpha twister" to
a reading buddy.

With just
allotted per day, you
can review many skills in a fun, simple way!

Introduce the "alpha twister" sentence.


Use "echo reading" to build student familiarity. Ask
students to highlight the focus letter with a
highlighter or yellow crayon.
: Read the "alpha twister" chorally.
Handwriting-Review the correct way to form the
uppercase and lowercase letters. Students will trace
the letters and practice writing the alpha twister in
their nicest handwriting.
: Students will illustrate the "alpha
twister," and read it with a buddy to build fluency.
: Read the alpha twister and locate high
frequency words. Circle or underline them. In
addition, students can highlight familiar chunks or
word families that they recognize.
: As a class think of an action or movement to
match the "alpha twister." Read the twister and do
the motions.
