Ambrosio Padilla
A lawyer is expected to be well-versed in all the laws of the land and its interpretation and if there
is one thing that I know is undisputed, it is that Senator Ambrosio Paddy Padilla was all that and more.
He has not only exceeded the expectations set by the people, but he also had set the highest standards
on how we, as Filipinos, should be Filipinos.
Ambrosio Padilla was the eighth of the 11 children of Nicanor Padilla and Ysabel Bibby. When he
was 31, he married Lourdes de las Alas and was a loving father to 10 children.
Senator Padilla was Salutatorian and Summa Cum Laude when he finished Bachelor of Laws at
the University of the Philippines and his undergraduate course at the Ateneo de Manila University
respectively. He was third overall in the 1934 Bar Examinations and further earned his Doctorate Degree
in Civil Laws at the University of Santo Tomas.
He was likewise an excellent sportsman inside and outside the court. He was the team captain
and member of the national basketball team for the 1936 Berlin Olympics. During his lifetime, he
continuously promoted and contributed to the development of sports as he had seated President and
Chairman of different sports-related associations.
Atty. Padillas career as a lawyer, law professor, and author was highly regarded and earned the
respect and admiration not only from his accolades but also from aspiring lawyers and Filipinos. He was
also acknowledged for his exemplary public service. He seated various government positions and
performed his functions with honor and integrity. He was the Solicitor General and Counsel for
Government Corporate during the Magsaysay administration. But, he was most known and much-loved
by the Filipinos as an outstanding senator for 12 years or more if the late Pres. Marcos didnt declare
Martial Law.
He vigorously fought dictatorship and adversaries of Philippine democracy during the Martial Law
era. Soon after the People Power Revolution and when the Filipinos clamored desperately for change, the
late President Corazon Aquino appointed him member and was elected vice chairman of the
Constitutional Commission which drafted our 1987 Constitution.
Ambrosio Bibby Padilla was a God-fearing individual, a son, a husband, a father, a lawyer, a
professor, an author, a senator, and most of all a Filipino. He was the Filipino we should all be like.
