Management Acceleration Programme 2016 2017

Executive Education for

a rapidly changing world.
As todays world becomes more interconnected, the business landscape in which
we operate grows more complex. INSEADs Executive Education programmes
are developed to respond to this rapidly changing global business environment,
unravelling and explaining new complexities while contextualising challenges and
introducing new solutions. We provide transformational learning experiences that
help individuals and businesses find new levels of innovation, motivation and value
creation, achieved through programmes that are informed by a global outlook,
thought leadership and an understanding of how to create real impact. Operating
from three different campuses in Europe, Asia and Abu Dhabi, we are consistently
ranked among the top 10 business schools in the world.

Embracing diversity and a global outlook

Informed global perspectives and cultural diversity
are reflected in all aspects of our research and
teaching. These elements, combined with a
multicultural base of faculty and participants,
enable senior executives, aspiring leaders and
growth-driven companies to turn in-market
challenges and business uncertainty into future
opportunities.
Inspiring thought leadership
Our approach is built on research-driven
thought leadership with a clear path to action.
Fresh insights and concepts are distilled to
participants to allow them to explore and acquire
new perspectives, ideas, skills and a depth of
knowledge that drives best practice and thought
leadership in their own lives and organisations.
Creating impact
We have a transformational impact on both
individuals looking to prepare themselves for
new situations and organisations seeking greater
business agility and success. Through interactive
and emotional learning experiences, we go beyond
showing participants what is needed and show
them how to achieve it, creating real impact.

Management Acceleration Programme 2016 2017

02

Introduction
Move into management. Become a leader.
You have been working for a few years.
You have done well. You aspire for more.
Maybe you want to increase your ability
and confidence to take the next step in your
stride. Or maybe you want some space and
inspiration to figure out what step to take next.
In either case, the Management Acceleration
Programme is for you.
A three-week intensive learning experience,
the Management Acceleration Programme
will enhance your ability to manage with
competence and lead with purpose. It is
specifically conceived for high-performing
functional experts who are about, or have
recently begun, to manage people formally
or informally. It will help you navigate that
landmark career transition and strengthen
your foundations for long-term success.
The Management Acceleration Programme
will equip you with a general management
perspective. It will broaden your general
business knowledge and strengthen your
competence in key functional disciplines. It
will deepen your ability to lead and follow
mindfully, effectively and responsibly in a
business world where information overload,
virtual teams, volatility, uncertainty and
pressure are the norm. It will help you to
revisit the trajectory of your personal and
professional growth, articulate what success
means to you and what achieving it may take.
Finally, it will connect you to an international
community of high potentials.
Key benefits
You will return to the office ready to make a
difference and take on broader responsibilities.
You will
Become a more competent and confident
manager with new insights, knowledge and
skills.

Enhance your ability to lead mindfully,

effectively and responsibly with or without
formal authority
Learn how to stay focused on creating value
and grounded in a long-term purpose
Develop clear aims and plans for your
ongoing personal and professional
development
Join a community of international high
potentials that will support you long after the
programme
Our knowledge. Your experience.
The Management Acceleration Programme
will expose you to timeless principles and
cutting-edge knowledge based on research
by INSEAD faculty. Two core ideas provide the
programmes conceptual backbone. The first
is that the function of management is to create
value. You will learn how to recognise, create,
capture and avoid destroying value in your
daily work. The second is that the function of
leadership is to give coherence, direction and
voice to a community. You will learn how to
craft a shared direction, influence and motivate
others and work with others influence upon
you.
If theories are all that you are after, however,
the Management Acceleration Programme
is not for you. Throughout the programme,
concepts, frameworks and best practices serve
to help you learn from and through experience
past and present, your own and others.
The programme is engaging and personally
involving. You will be invited to pursue your
own learning agenda and support the learning
of others. You will reflect upon your own work,
context, history and aspirations. You will
learn from and with classmates facing similar
predicaments in different contexts. In short,
the programme will offer you opportunities to
reflect, imagine and experiment as well as to
listen, absorb and apply.

03

Management Acceleration Programme 2016 2017

Programme content
The Management Acceleration Programme
curriculum focuses on three domains:
strengthening your leadership foundations
and skills; sharpening your strategic insight;
providing the tools to understand and manage
all aspects of a business. Content-driven
session streams alternate with experiential
opportunities designed to make the learning
personal and integrate it into a coherent,
actionable whole.
Leadership foundations and skills
There is no such thing as actual and future
leaders, only people who lead and people who
dont. This part of the programme will help
you examine how you lead, why, and on whose
behalf in your work. It will also give you the
skills to lead and work within diverse teams and
across functions and cultures.
Topics in organisational behaviour will include:
Developing your own and others leadership
talent
Giving and receiving effective feedback
Understanding, motivating and
communicating within teams
Exercising influence without formal authority
Harnessing organisational culture and
managing across cultures
Leading organisational change.
Strategic insight
Being able to manage for value and lead
with purpose involves the ability not just to
create and implement a strategy but also to
think strategically about every decision you
champion and every action you undertake.
This part of the programme will help you grasp
the essence of strategic analysis, including the
latest techniques. As well as understanding
how to compete as a single company within a
single industry, you will learn how to build and
manage a portfolio of businesses.

Topics in strategy include:

Analysis by industry, market and competition
Developing and sustaining competitive
advantage
Changing the rules of the game: Blue Ocean
Strategy
Strategic resources and alliances
Corporate expansion, mergers and
acquisitions.
Business knowledge and tools
Inspiring leadership and strategic insights
are useless, if not dangerous, unless they are
anchored in a sound understanding of your
context. The Management Acceleration
Programme will take you on a learning
journey through all the parts of a business that
create, capture and deliver value. You will gain
a broad perspective on business and the tools
to analyse complex problems in each functional
area, regardless of your own background.
Finance
Financial reporting is not only required by law
for publicly traded firms but is also essential
for instituting management discipline. We first
help you to develop a deep understanding of
the main financial statements, their interactions,
and their key drivers. We then show you how
these rich sources of information are used
for strategic decision-making as well as for
performance monitoring and management.
Topics include:
Managing liquidity
Valuation and long-term decisions
Investment
Requirements of the companys strategy
Constraints of the financial markets.

Management Acceleration Programme 2016 2017

Management accounting
The availability of unbiased financial and
operational data is central to a wide range
of management responsibilities, including
strategic decision-making and performance
management. We will show you how some
widely used management-accounting systems
often mislead managers and provide you with
tools to help you identify information that is
relevant. We will cover areas such as:
Classification, behaviour and use of
management-accounting data
Control systems.
Marketing
Successful marketing is all about developing
a coherent and systematic approach. From
reviewing the most important issues to
practising qualitative and quantitative analysis,
we develop your ability to make structured
marketing decisions in situations that initially
seem totally unstructured.
Topics may include the following:
Marketing strategy and the marketing mix
Communications
Channels of distribution
Pricing and product policy.
Operations and supply chain management
While strategy is about direction setting and
finance about performance management,
operations and supply chain management is
about execution. We will not only discuss the
key challenges to value creation in a supply
network but also introduce coordinating
initiatives for value capture in a decentralised
organisation. Issues typically include:
Value creation breaking the cost-service
trade-off
Value capture aligning the network
The role of technology in synchronising the
supply chain ecosystem.

04

Learning from experience.

Set Your Leadership Agenda (SYLA)
A unique, hands-on leadership development
workshop in the first week will give you a
chance to examine how your history and
aspirations in addition to the context you
operate in affect the ways you feel, think
and act as a leader. It will reveal how you lead
and work with others and how you can grow
further, as well as challenging you to articulate
your leadership purpose and move towards it.
This intensive part of the programme involves
a series of activities and reflection, individual
and group-based, facilitated by professional
coaches. You will have a chance to practise your
leadership skills and receive feedback from
classmates and colleagues from work through a
360-degree feedback instrument.
Integrative business exercise
Throughout the programme, several linking
moments help you to integrate its various parts
into one whole, value-creating perspective. But
the final chapter explicitly connects everything
you have learned over the previous weeks,
preparing you to make an immediate difference
on your return to the office.
This powerful, two-and-a-half-day exercise
allows you to experience the challenges
and dilemmas of a manager leading an
entrepreneurial firm. Under the expert
guidance of INSEAD faculty, you grow your
business from a small local company into a
mature international organisation, competing
with your fellow participants to win contracts
and market share. It is a one-off opportunity
that leaves you buzzing with energy and ideas
for the real-life challenges and opportunities to
come.

05

Management Acceleration Programme 2016 2017

Learning process
The Management Acceleration Programme
builds on three assumptions that inform the
learning process.

Experiential activities to practise and

examine your leadership in conditions of
uncertainty

The first is that taking a general management

perspective requires understanding the
functional elements of business and integrating
those elements into actionable knowledge
and applicable skills. The programme
balances sessions on specialist disciplines and
integrative experiences that offer opportunities
to deepen, practise and contextualise your
knowledge.

Feedback from faculty, classmates and

colleagues at work through a 360-degree
instrument

The second is that managing and leading

well involves your whole self not just your
professional knowledge and skills. The
programme involves experiential activities
and assisted reflection to deepen your
understanding of the interplay between what
you do and who you are. The curriculum has
been designed to increase your ability to
manage yourself and others in conditions of
uncertainty and pressure.

The Management Acceleration Programme

is much more than a course and an opportunity
to pause and reflect it is also a community.
INSEADs dedication to international diversity
is reflected in the composition of the global
community of executives that you will become
a member of. An online platform keeps
the community connected long after the
programme is over. As well as a networking
medium, the platform is a continuous learning
tool. And after 100 days, there is a follow-up
session by phone to cement your learning and
support your continued impact at work.

The third is that leadership is not a job title it

is an attitude and an activity. Management and
leadership are exercised on a daily basis at
all levels of an organisation, within and across
teams. The programme invites you to examine
how you lead and why. It also enables you to
work in a variety of diverse teams to learn
how you influence teams and the ways teams
influence you.
The Management Acceleration Programme
includes a variety of learning methodologies:
Interactive lectures to grasp the latest
thinking and foundational concepts
Case discussions based on real-life business
dilemmas
Work in diverse teams that provide
perspectives different than your own

Group consulting and personal coaching

to assist your learning, reflection and future
planning
Simulations to integrate your knowledge
and skills in a competitive yet low-risk
environment

06

Management Acceleration Programme 2016 2017

Optional follow-up coaching

for learning enhancement
The Management Acceleration Programme
aims to stimulate and enable aspiring leaders
to engage in a journey of lifelong learning.
Just as the 3-week programme preparation
work, design and experiences aim to maximise
participants learning while on campus, our
series of optional follow-up virtual coaching
sessions aim to maximise participants ongoing
learning and development as they return to
the workplacethereby leveraging their own
and their organisations investment in the
programme in the months following the return
home.
These follow-up sessions will allow participants
to articulate insights that emerge slowly after
the programme is over; support change
experiments that are at the core of ongoing
development; bolster participants resolve to
continue their learning journey; recognise their
successes with new approaches, and; counter
the potentially detrimental effect of obstacles,
habits and routines.

What does it involve?

Specific objectives for the coaching work
will be set by participant and coach at the
beginning of their work together, and can
be revisited along the way. If appropriate,
participants can involve their manager,
colleagues, partners in the process in order
to gather feedback and ensure alignment and
support.
The process may provide an opportunity for
continued focus on the results of the 360
feedback report, and on feedback received
from fellow MAP participants. Participants may
also use the coaching to continue exploring
more personal themes that influence how they
take up various roles in their life.
Participants may work with their original MAP
coach, or another practitioner with experience
of the learning methodologies employed in
the programme. Sessions will be virtual, using
telephone and/or internet telecoms, and
entirely confidential.
For more information and to view the price
of opting for this follow-up coaching, please

Faculty
All the breadth and depth of the programme is
personified in its faculty. INSEADs professors
represent many cultures, many disciplines,
many perspectives. At the same time, theyre
acknowledged world experts in their own
particular fields and outstanding teachers.
With strong track records in research and
teaching, our faculty also remain intimately
close to business. Most are engaged in
cross-disciplinary research, either through
dual-subject appointments to INSEAD or
through the schools multi-faceted research
centres. Our innovative Knowledge website
showcases all the latest research from our
faculty including articles, white papers, videos
and podcasts. Please view
http://knowledge.insead.edu/home.cfm.
Unlike many schools, we make sure that our
own highly rated professors represent the
vast majority of the faculty on our General
Management Programmes. As a professional
body, INSEADs professors are a diverse
collection of great minds that think anything
but alike. Thats what makes the Management
Acceleration Programme such a great
learning experience. But they all share a deep
understanding of business and a commitment
to helping you do it better.

Programme Directors
Henrik Bresman (Sweden)
Programme Director
Associate Professor of Organisational Behaviour

To me, this is a uniquely powerful

programme because it not only allows
participants to acquire knowledge and skills
that are critical for leaders today, but it also
provides a space for them to learn how to
use that knowledge and those skills in an
authentic and personal way. It is a privilege
for me to be there to help guide the three week
journey of the programme, which often is truly
transformational for those who decide to join.

Gianpiero Petriglieri (Italy)

Programme Director
Associate Professor of Organisational Behaviour

I love being immersed in the community

that the programme brings together. It
is incredibly diverse and yet bound by
something everyone shares. They are all
emerging leaders. They are facing delicate
transitions in their professional and personal
lives. You can sense it in the room, that unique
mix of ambition and uncertainty they all
hope to craft careers and life trajectories that
are both successful and meaningful. I am
inspired by the participants commitment to
acquire new knowledge, to examine the ways
they think and act, and to learn from and with
each other ultimately, to become the best
managers and leaders they can be.

Jennifer Petriglieri (United Kingdom)

Programme Director
Assistant Professor of Organisational Behaviour

What makes the Management Acceleration

Programme special is the depth and breadth
of the developmental journey that unfolds
over the three weeks of the programme.
Participants make great strides towards
their career and personal goals. They
gain the knowledge and skills to work
confidently across functional and national
boundaries, and form valuable bonds with
a global community that spans industries
and continents. The insights, tools and
connections the Management Acceleration
Programme equips them with, help
participants be authentic and effective leaders
in their organisations and communities once
they return home.

even developed businesses together. Theres
something about the cross-cultural relationships
formed at INSEAD that makes them particularly
strong and enduring.

From participants to alumni

Management Acceleration Programme 2016 2017

Former participant of INSEADs Management Acceleration Programme

Nancy Lebosquain

A few years ago, I was at a crossroads in my

career. I was not sure what direction to take
whether to take the step to the next level or
gain more expertise and focus in one area. As I
had a greater intention to move to a completely
different role with more responsibility and
a broader scope, I decided to look at the
Management Acceleration Programme. I
was really excited to be able to have the
opportunity to continue to develop myself, and
then professionally to be able to move to that
next level and show to everyone else that I was
ready. I really expected a typical executive
education format but it wasnt at all like that.
There were very few things that did not
exceed expectations. We had a hugely diverse
faculty who were experts in their own areas.
I think what really surprised me about the
programme was that we all became very close
to each other. We spent all of our time together,
we learned from each other and we shared
experiences. The other thing that surprised me
was the amount of self-awareness, the exercises
and the approach that was taken. It was very
unconventional, but it really works. It was very
much about self-discovery and learning to
know who you are. I really benefited from just
being able to better understand myself and that
way also become a better manager.
My organisation found that when I came back
from INSEAD, I was a better manager, a better
leader. The programme gives you the ability to
separate yourself from the day-to-day politics
and focus on what needs to get done at a really
high level. After attending the programme,
your business skills are sharper. In the short

and long term, the self-awareness pieces were

critical, and I underestimated how important
that was. The programme was a total upheaval.
It is crazy to be using these words, but it really
was. I think everyone was surprised at the
depth that we went into and how really it wasnt
just touchy-feely fuzzy things. It was things that
do affect you and make you a better person and
a better manager.
INSEAD is different. Ive done a few other
executive education programmes, and this was
very special. Its absolutely worth the money,
its worth the time and the effort, and I would go
back in an instant.

Why should I choose INSEAD above other

business schools?
We think our diversity is our distinguishing
feature. INSEAD is probably the only school
where youll find 30 nationalities in the same
class. And its certainly the only school where
no single one of those 30 nationalities will
predominate. Having said that, our faculty
are among the best (and most diverse) in the
world too!
Why should I do a General Management
Programme?
INSEADs world-class, comprehensive
business leadership General Management
Programmes will equip you with the skills,
knowledge and the confidence to achieve
a successful transition on your journey to
becoming a great business leader. Created
and delivered by some of the worlds best
faculty, each one of these programmes will
challenge assumptions and enhance leadership
skills, delivering a broader vision to both you
and your organisation. Depending on your
level and experience, we offer the Advanced
Management Programme, Transition
to General Management, Management
Acceleration Programme and the Asian
International Executive Programme.

Management Acceleration Programme 2016 2017

Why is diversity so important?

The obvious answer is that business is more
international than ever before. But its the
subtle answer thats much more powerful.
With so many different national and cultural
perspectives to learn from, you really will start
to see things differently. By challenging your
old assumptions, youll become aware of new
possibilities and start to understand how very
different people think.
How do I know that this General
Management programme is right for me?
Its all about the amount of experience you
have and the stage youre at in your career.
Management Acceleration Programme
participants generally have approximately five
years work experience and have the potential
for future senior general management positions.
If you would like to compare the Management
Acceleration Programme with the other
general management options, take alook at our
easy-to-use table.
Is the emphasis on soft leadership skills or
hard knowledge, tools and frameworks?
To be successful in business you need to
balance your soft skills with your fundamental
business understanding. So the programme
seeks to enhance your understanding
across the full business spectrum, while also
developing your leadership capabilities. Its
such an integrated programme that soft and
hard skills are intertwined and built together.

Do I have to attend the sessions on my own

area of expertise?
Absolutely. First, you might gain a new
perspective on your field. And second, you
will have the valuable experience of passing
on your expertise to classmates from other
disciplines. Its by sharing insights that people
learn at INSEAD, as well as by listening to the
wisdom of our faculty of course.
So what do I do next?
Youre talented, motivated, ambitious and
hungry to learn. And youve read this far. So
the next step is to apply using the form at www.
executive-education.insead.edu/management_
acceleration. When you need INSEAD again, for
the transition into general management or an
even more senior post, well be there for you
and your company. But for now, lets accelerate
your management career together
