We all know that February is the month we celebrate love. In fact, we will have a Valentines
Fellowship on February 12, 2017 @ 5:30pm. We will have wonderful food and great fellowship
as well and who knows what else we will come up with. So why do we celebrate love and what
does this little guy with a bow and arrow have to do with anything?
Valentines Day is named for Saint Valentine of Terni, who was a martyr for the faith. Although
this day is widely celebrated for the day we set aside for mushy and romantic ideas this day
actually means something completely different to those who believe.
On February 14 in the year of 269 Valentinus was put to death at the command of Claudius
Gothicus for not denouncing his Christian faith. During his time in prison for sharing the Gospel
the emperor began to really like him until Valentinus began sharing his Christian faith with the
emperor. Claudius rejected this notion of being a follower of Christ and also gave the order to
kill Valentinus.
This man does not represent the Love you and I think of when we celebrate Valentines Day.
That kind of love is known as Eros in the Greek language. That kind of love is the kind of love a
man has for a woman and we definitely should embrace love in that manner. However, the love
this man represents is different; he represents Phileo love- which is a love for his brothers and
sisters and then also he demonstrated Agape love; which is an unconditional love, the type of
Love God has for people. Why then would this man stand so firmly when challenged to renounce
faith? Because he experienced the Agape Love
of God through Jesus our Lord and wanted
everyone around him to also know that Love.

As you celebrate Love this year I hope you

will take time to remember the greatest love a
man can have is to lay His life down for
another. John 15:13
