Get creative at MakersFest

D

owntown Lancaster celebrates the arts with a passion.

Not only is this weekend our First Friday weekend (visitlancastercity.com), but on Sunday the 300 block
of North Queen Street will host the third annual MakersFest, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen.
The street festival pays tribute to both the creation and
the creative process, with more than 25 artisans displaying everything from jewelry to furniture, with hands-on
creative activities for all ages. Those activities include silkscreening your own shirt; 3-D printing demos (and try your
hand at designing a trinket to be printed); sidewalk chalk
painting; a soldering station; upcycled craft making; and
a painting zone.
At Guild headquarters, 335 N. Queen St., visitors can
watch woodturning and weaving demonstrations.
Food trucks will be set up in the Building Character courtyard creativity works up an appetite! The event also will
feature live music.
MakersFest (has) opportunities for the whole family to
try their hand at one of our Make Stations, take home beautiful handmade items from exhibiting artists, watch professional artists demonstrate their craft, and learn about local
creative groups, says the Guilds executive director, Brandi
Clark.
MakersFest will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. For
more information, call 431-8706 or visit pacrafts.org.

REVIEW

ME BEFORE YOU
Tears will be jerked in this film about a bitter
quadriplegic and his cheery caretaker
RICHARD ROEPER

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES

hen the lights dim and the

movie begins, we try to shed
our perceptions of the actors in other roles theyve done but
sometimes the casting in a movie is
just too meta to ignore.
In Me Before You, Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones is the
daughter of Mr. Bates from Downton
Abbey, and she falls in love with Finnick Odair from The Hunger Games,

whose father is ... Tywin Lannister

from Game of Thrones.
When Emilia Clarkes character
meets Charles Dances character,
I couldnt help wishing he would
say, The mother of dragons, in MY
house!?
But that would be a Funny or Die
clip and not a movie, and we are here
to talk about the movie, and alas, Me
Before You is nowhere near as entertaining as the television programs and
the film referenced above.

Based on a beloved and best-selling

novel, and doing everything to make
you cry short of flooding theaters with
the overwhelming scent of onions,
Me Before You is a beautifully filmed
and well-intentioned weeper marred
by an unfortunate performance from
one of the leads, and a plot development that leaves us more angry and
frustrated than moved in the final act.
Emilia Clarke from Game of
Thrones floors the gas pedal on selfconsciously adorable as Louisa aka
Lou, a painfully simple working-class
girl in her mid-20s who dresses like a
7-year-old pretending to be a grownup, furrows her considerable eyebrows
so frequently and so aggressively were
afraid they might just leave her face,
and maintains the cheerful demeanor
of a princess-to-be in a Disney cartoon.

EL

Sam Claflins Will had it all the

looks, the charm, the great job, the
moneyed background (he grew up in
an actual castle), the beautiful girlfriend until the rainy morning when
he was yapping on his cellphone and
he walked right into the path of a motorcycle, and now hes a quadriplegic,
living on the grounds of his parents
estate, alienating one caregiver after
another, blasting metal music in his
room and hating every second of his
existence.
Enter Lou as Wills latest caregiver,
and here come the plot references
to My Fair Lady, Educating Rita,
The Bucket List, Pretty Woman
(Lou even wears a red dress to a musical performance, a la Julia Roberts)
and even Dying Young (in which Ms.
Roberts played a caregiver to a wealthy

patient played by Campbell Scott).

Will is rude to the point of cruelty. Lou keeps coming
at him with flowers and enthusiasm and suggestions for
fun activities they can do. Wills loving parents (Charles
Dance and Janet McTeer) pace about their enormous
home in their tasteful rich peoples clothes, arguing about
what to do about Wills state of mind. The soundtrack is
peppered with songs containing lyrics almost literally
describing what just transpired, as we transition to the
next scene.
At one point, Lou notices scars on Wills wrists, indicating a suicide attempt. Am I wrong to wonder how a quadriplegic cut his own wrists? Did someone help him?
Bigger problems with Me Before You include Lous
boorish wet blanket of a boyfriend, a self-absorbed clown
who makes it REALLY easy for Lou to turn her eyes to
Will.
Also, scenes in which the audience at a concert and the
guests at a wedding reception are horrified by the mere
presence of a man in a wheelchair seem way, way over
the top. Yes, differently abled individuals must deal with
ignorant reactions from some people. But in Me Before
You, the elite and the privileged stare at Will as if they
have never seen anyone in a wheelchair and they cant
believe he has the nerve to join them in society.
And then theres Will himself. Granted, its beyond our
comprehension to fully understand what it must be like
to be in the best of health one day and then unable to
walk or move ones arms the next. Its a tragedy. Yet Will
is in a situation that would be the envy of 99.9 percent of
quadriplegics. The decisions he makes are more infuriating than debate-provoking, more selfish than the selflessness with which theyre portrayed in the film.
As tearjerkers go, this one features a guy whos something of a jerk.

n Me Before You is playing at the Regal, Penn and MoviE-town

theaters. Its rated PG-13 for thematic elements and some suggestive
material. Running time is 110 minutes.

outhern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd and British pop

rocker Peter Frampton will perform at Clipper Magazine Stadium on Wednesday night, when American
Music Theatre brings its first show to downtown Lancaster.
You dont think we fit together, but we really do, says
Frampton, whose 1976 Frampton Comes Alive album remains one of the best-selling live albums in music history.
We did a lot of dates together in 75 and 76. We had a
great thing going then. Theyre great people.
And besides, he says, the concert will feature two of the
longest songs in radio history: Lynyrd Skynyrds Free
Bird and Framptons Do You Feel Like We Do.
British bluesman Jack Broadbent will open the show.

Latest on Frampton
The tour with Skynyrd is a change of pace for Frampton,
who lately has been performing mostly unplugged concerts
in support of his newest album Acoustic Classics.
The new CD is really doing well (both with the public
and critics), he says. I cant ask for more than that.
Frampton recorded the 11-track album in his home studio. It includes remakes of some of his most famous songs,
including Show Me the Way, Baby, I Love Your Way, Do
You Feel Like We Do and Im In You.
But if youre expecting to hear the songs the way they
sounded in the 70s, think again.

couple days, he says. Boy, was I wrong.

After hearing his first take, Frampton thought
to himself, Thats exactly NOT what I want.
What I was doing was going in the studio and
playing like I played them 40 years ago, he says.
What he envisioned was something much more
intimate.
I went back and stripped them back, maybe
lowered it a half a tone so I didnt have to belt it
out, he says. Like you came over for coffee, and
I said, Hey, I wrote this song last night; can I try
it out on you?
A friend told him later, When I have it on and
Im in the kitchen, I feel like youre in the living
room playing your guitar, he says. Thats exactly what I wanted.
The acoustic album is another example of the
different incarnations of Frampton.
It was in 2006 when Frampton released an instrumental album, Fingerprints, that seemed
to give the singer a second wind, after his phenomenal success in the 70s.

CLAY PATRICK MCBRIDE

Lynyrd Skynyrd will be joining Peter Frampton in

concert at Clipper Magazine Stadium Wednesday.

Fingerprints, which Frampton dedicated to

his father, won the Grammy Award for best pop
instrumental album.

feeling that my peers were saying, Yes,

he is the musician hes always been.
The instrumental and the Grammy
sort of solidified my whole M.O. of
Im on the right track here, he says.
And since then, he says, Things have
gone from better to great.

Wednesdays show
When Frampton performs with
Lynyrd Skynyrd on Wednesday, hell
revert back to a heavier style.
Usually when you play with a coheadliner youre down to an hour and a
half, maximum, he says. So I tend to
rock it out all the way through. But Ill
throw in a couple of acoustic songs.
While Frampton has seen his share

of studio time, nothing appeals to the

musician in him like performing live.
Thats the pinnacle of my enjoyment, playing live, he says, no matter
what size the venue.
Frampton tells the story of sitting
in a London speakeasy when the song
Whiter Shade of Pale came on the
jukebox.
You couldve heard a pin drop, he
recalls. Music has that effect. It just
takes you over.
And he is fortunate, he says, to have
created songs that have that effect.
To look up and see the faces of people, to see couples putting their arms
around each other when I play Baby I
Love Your Way, Im very lucky to have
songs that mean so much to people.
And thats why I love to play live.

Toms new girlfriend (who is actually the maid) is giving me lectures

about how I should behave, and Im
thinking, Who are you?, Faust says,
Why should I listen to you I dont
even know you.
Faust notes that her character is a
bit of a Bridezilla.
Everything would be fine if everyone just did what I told them to do,
Faust says, laughing.
We will do anything to keep Rachel happy, Lamason says. That
actually becomes my job as the best
man.
In this day and age of Pinterest, Rachel is expecting perfection.
All Daphne cares about is getting
her daughter married.
The mother wants it to happen at
all costs, says DiSavino.
Rachel is very concerned with image, says Faust. Shes giving off the
image of a perfect wedding, but not
really thinking about how she and
Bill work as a couple. Things are not
going great.
Bill doesnt even realize all the
things involved in a wedding, says
Shea. What? I have to worry about
napkins? Hes a character who wants
to take the easy path.
And Tom?
I like the idea of a party and drinking, says Lamason. I dont want to
complicate things. Im just doing all
of Rachels bidding.
But complications are at the root of
everything.
Just about everyone expected Rachel and Bill would eventually get
married, even if the relationship
isnt great at this point.
Tom has had a crush on Rachel
since high school, and Bill finds himself with feelings for his bedmate,
Judy.
And what about Judy?
Shes a victim of circumstances,
says Casner. She just started dating
Tom a few months ago and all this
happens.
And those four doors on the set?
Expect plenty of slamming.

The tools of a photographer may be

a digital camera, a 35mm film camera,
vintage processes, even Polaroid. The
images may be street photography,
fine art, portraiture or classic landscapes.
A good photograph is original, it
contains an idea, it offers more than
one layer of interpretation and it is
well made, says Frischkorn.
When its a good photograph, you
just know it. It speaks to you.
I think the name of Expanded Visions for the show has more significance than ever, says Frischkorn,
adding that the exhibit, which started
in the 1980s as Silver Visions, is in its
32nd year, after taking a hiatus for several years and returning six years ago
when she volunteered to coordinate it.
In many ways, Frischkorn believes

that the Expanded Visions show

is a way for photographers to prove
that they are indeed artists in every
sense of the word. In recent years, the
show has become an annual tradition
for photographers in Lancaster. Since
many notable art exhibits exclude
photography, Expanded Visions gives
regional photographers a venue in
which to shine as artists.
And shine they do.
Eric Weeks, who served as juror for
the show, had to narrow down the winners from dozens of entries. Weeks is
chairman of photography at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design. A fine
arts photographer who works and
teaches in both New York and Lancaster, he is known for his series of
photographs of his wife titled, World
Was in the Face of the Beloved.
Right after he selected the winning

images for Expanded Visions, Eric

was off to Korea to curate a photography exhibition at the 2016 Jeonju
International Photo Festival, Frischkorn says.
It was not easy to choose four winners from nearly 50 photographs in
the exhibit. What made the top photographs stand apart from the rest went
back to that intuitive aspect of a good
photograph, making it a great photograph.
I am especially enamored with the
first-place winner, Karen Commings,
Weeks says. Its such a well-seen image of a subtle, tender moment.
Frischkorn agrees, adding that she
loves that the scene is shown through
a window and the viewer is allowed to
imagine what the subjects are looking at. She was smart to convert her
image to black and white. It makes
it timeless and
you focus on the
people through
the window and
are not distracted
by color, Frischkorn adds.
The
secondplace winner is

Hongvanthong, who used

pelling photograph that is inspired by

Mexican artist Frida Kahlos self portrait. Hongvanthongs Nina Kahlo
shows an Asian woman with a serious
expression, a crown of white flowers
and eyebrows that connect in the middle as Kahlos did.
Third-place winner Erin Berrys
landscape has a retro feel to it, with silhouetted trees, a farmhouse and snowdappled golden fields. She uses Photoshop to create an intriguing arc of five
crows in the faded blue sky.
I am impressed with her restraint,
Frischkorn says. It is easy to go too far
with that kind of technique, and she
has kept it minimal, making it really
effective.
Ashley Noels Honorable Mention
shows a young barefoot woman in a
sun-dappled forest. Noel recreates
classic fairy tales with female characters, and in this image, the woman and
the golden lighting share the limelight.

Paul McCartney mines virtual reality for new release
RANDY LEWIS

LOS ANGELES TIMES

aul McCartney is bringing fans into his world

by way of virtual reality through a six-part series of VR experiences created to support the
June 10 release of Pure McCartney, his new retrospective album surveying the music of his career
after the Beatles disbanded.
The ex-Beatle has teamed with VR producer-publisher Jaunt to create the segments that explore a
handful of songs on the new album in a 360-degree
video format.
The first two segments, for the songs Dance Tonight and Coming Up, launched last week. Valentine (Part 1) launched Tuesday, with additional
segments due June 7 for My Valentine (Part 2),
June 10 (for Mull of Kintyre) and June 14 (Early
Days).
Filmed in his private home studio, each experi-

ence allows fans to embark on a personal journey

with Paul as he recounts memories and anecdotes
while sharing archived and never before seen footage, a statement says. Paul is walking people
through how these songs came to be and some of
the emotions and personal experiences that led to
the creation of the songs and the original music
videos associated with them.
The Pure McCartney VR segments blend highresolution video content with digitally remastered and spatially oriented ambisonic audio mixed
in Dolby Atmos, the statement said.
It will be accessible with the Jaunt VR app,
which will be available in iOS, Android, Gear
VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Desktop 360 formats.
We used to see artists connect with their fans
through album covers and liner notes, but that personal expression, and deeper understanding of the

music, has diminished over the years, Jaunt Studios President Cliff Plumer said in the statement.
With virtual reality, Paul McCartney is taking the
most innovative step yet; hes connecting directly
with his fans, to share his innermost thoughts and
experiences, in an entirely new, personal and immersive way.
McCartney has been involved in forward-thinking visual arenas for music almost since the beginning of his career, most notably with the Beatles
career-changing performances on The Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964, their first feature
film, A Hard Days Night, and the experimental
music film Magical Mystery Tour that he largely
directed.
Even a project for which the Beatles simply gave
their approval, the 1968 Yellow Submarine movie, became a groundbreaking example of the evolving art of film animation.

are at the rear.

Soft lighting is comfortable on the eyes, as are the large
black-and-white images on the wall. Muted music plays
in the background, and there is nothing to get in the way
of conversation. The staff host, waiter and bartender
all were welcoming, friendly and professional.
We went to Barberet for brunch on Mothers Day. However, a look at the menu shows the fare on that special
day was really no different from what you will find on any
other day. (The restaurant usually is closed on Sundays
and Mondays.)
There was a little trouble with our drink orders.
First, the waiter (understandably) passed over our
daughter, who had recently turned 21. (She eventually
did get her mimosa.) Also, a bloody mary had a tad too
much heat to it because of the bartenders heavy hand
on the horseradish. Under different circumstances, this
wouldnt have been a problem, but we were worried the
heat of the drink would sear the sensitivity of the taste
buds.
And that would have been a shame.
We must have been under the influence of the bakery
because we ordered an assortment of pastries as an appetizer to share (appetizers range from about $8 to $18).
It also made sense to order the pastries because the business is owned by Cedric and Estelle Barberet, and Cedric
was the pastry chef at Le Bec Fin in Philadelphia.
Unfortunately, the pastries arrived just minutes before
our entrees, and we split a single croissant before pushing them aside for a take-home treat. (Fortunately, we
dined on eggs and the light, flaky and delicious pastries
for dinner.)
All three of us were in the mood for seafood, so we
settled on the crab cake, mussels and a salmon dish. (En-

trees range from about $15 to $25.) All were excellent,

delightfully presented and prepared to near perfection.
The mussels, piled high on a plate, were plump and
juicy, prepared in a delicate blend of herbs, white wine
and garlic that enhanced but didnt overpower the
flavor of the mussels.
The salmon showed the same care in preparation.
The fish itself was expertly cooked and the garnish
only added to the inherent tastiness of the salmon.
We all shared each others food and pretty much
agreed (though a strong case was made for the mussels) that the crab cake was the star. The cake itself
was all about the crab, though a hint of what might
have been fennel was a nice, unexpected surprise. It
was served on a brioche bun that melted in the mouth,
a terrific match for the crab cake.
Unfortunately for us, the portions were so generous
that dessert was an impossibility.
When we return and we will return well make
sure we leave room for dessert. Those baked goods
beckon.

Barberet Bistro & Bakery

Before you even step foot inside the restaurant at Barberet Bistro & Bakery, your
mouth has reason to water.
The relatively new addition to Lancaster
citys thriving restaurant scene makes
sure of that by forcing customers to walk
by rows and rows of rich, colorful, meticulously crafted baked goods.
The collection of cakes, pastries and
cookies are visible to passers-by through
the large plate-glass windows along the

Square.
After walking through the front door
and making your way past the baked
goods, you enter the bistro part of the
Barberet equation.
The restaurant itself is a long rectangle,
with a full bar along one wall and a row
of tables along the other. There also are
some tables near the bar and along the
shorter walls. Sparkling clean bathrooms
