Procedures
for the First Week
of School

Remember to teach
procedures for:
1. Entering the classroom (Teach students how to
come in correctly, get their things put away, and get
going on their morning routine.)
2. Lining up (Teach students how to line up by pushing
in their chairs, moving into line without touching
others, and how to stand correctly in line.)
3. Hall procedures (Teach students how to walk in the
hall without talking and without touching other
students or the walls.
4. Cafeteria Procedures (Teach students, prior to
lunch, how to get their lunches, where to line up, and
how to behave correctly in the cafeteria.)
5. Recess Procedures (Teach students what the
expectations are for recess.)
6. Moving Through the Classroom (Teach students how
to move correctly from one point in the room to the
next.)
7. Carpet Procedures (Teach students how to sit
correctly on the floor and not bother others.)
8. Sharpening Pencils (Teach students when to sharpen
pencils and what to do if they need a new pencil
during the day.)
9. Restroom Procedures (Teach students what to do
on a whole group restroom break as well as the
procedure for needing to go at another time during
the day. Teach every detail including how to
correctly wash their hands.

10. School Supplies (Teach students how to care for


their supplies as well as the classroom supplies.
Teach students how to take out and put away the
supplies.)
11. Getting the Teachers Attention (Teach students
the correct way to get your attention and how to
raise their hand and not shout out.)
12. What to Do When Finished (Teach procedures on
where to put their work when they are finished as
well as what you would like for your students to do
while they are waiting.)
13. Working in Small Groups or with a Partner
(Teach students the procedures and expectations for
working in a small group or with a partner.)
14. Getting a Drink (Teach how to ask for a drink and
when are appropriate times to get a drink.)
15. Borrowing Classroom Books (Teach the students
the appropriate way to choose a book from the
classroom library and how to put it back correctly.
Also, teach the students how to carefully handle
books.)
16. Classroom assignments (Teach students to put their
names on their papers and how to get started right
away.)
17. Getting a Tissue (Teach students how to walk to get
a tissue without disturbing other students.)
18. Pledge of Allegiance & Morning Announcements
(Teach students appropriate behavior during the
Pledge of Allegiance. Go over the expectations for
the other morning announcements.

19. Drills (Teach the procedures for Fire Drills,


Tornado Drills, Lockdown Drills, etc.)
20. Desk Organization (Teach students how to organize
their desks and where items should be placed.)
21. Classroom Rules (Teach the students what the
classroom rules and expectations will be for the
year.)
22. Classroom Jobs (Teach each classroom job and go
over the expectations for each job.
23. Getting Out of Their Seats (Go over when it is
appropriate for students to leave their seats.
Demonstrate how to push in their chairs.)
24. Visitors in the Classroom (Teach the students what
to do when a visitor enters the classroom.)
25. Encouraging Others (Teach students how to
encourage their classmates and how to show
frustration appropriately.)
26. Greeting the Teacher and Other Adults (Teach
students how to greet the teacher and other adults in
the building with a smile and a Good Morning.)
27. Cleaning Up the Room (Teach students how to
effectively clean up the classroom at the end of the
day.)
28. Dismissal Procedures (Teach students the
appropriate way to get their backpacks ready and
line up quietly without bothering others. Teach
students, prior to dismissal, the expectations and
procedures for leaving the building at the end of the
day.)
