COURSEDESCRIPTION
The course will provide students an overview of theory and research on motivation and
emotion.Wewillbeginwithunderstandinghumanneedsincludingphysiological,psychological
and social needs. We will explore how our perception of ourselves, our roles, our identities,
amongst other things, influences our motivation and emotion in different contexts. We will
continuewithexploringthenatureofemotionsandthedifferentperspectivesonunderstanding
emotions.Wewillfinishwithadiscussiononhowunconsciousmotivationandemotionsmay
influence human behavior. The emphasis throughout the course will be on the relevance of
researchfindingstorealworldissues.

Studentswillbeencouragedtoreflectonthematerialinameaningfulway.Forthispurpose,
students will write three response papers approximately two pages each in the classroom.
Response papers will not simply be clarification on points covered in the readings but would
demonstrate that the student is reflecting on the material. Response papers may include
criticism of some points raised in the readings, interpretation of readings or applications to
researchorintervention.

Thetermpaperwillallowstudentstofindoutmoreaboutatopicthatisofpersonalinterestto
them in the area of motivation and emotion. Each student will write a ten to fifteen page
(doublespaced)paperusingAPAformat.Studentswillbeexpectedtoreviewtheliteratureon
thespecifictopicthattheychoose.Theywillalsobeexpectedtoconductasimpleexperiment.
