Anne Bradstreet

Bradstreet Project

Driving Question: What should the poem Here Follow Some Verses upon the
Burning of Our House, July 10, 1666 look like in the textbook?

As the Virginia Standards of Learning become more stringent and rigorous, textbook
publishers are scrambling to keep up the pace (just like students and teachers).
Prentice Hall, the publisher of our English textbooks, wants to put this poem by
Anne Bradstreet into the newest edition of the textbook. Your assignment is to
create a layout for the publisher that helps create the tone, mood and theme of the
poem on the page.

Your group needs to create the following pieces:

A business letter than accompanies your layout, introducing your layout
and explaining the big picture behind your design choices
o Our Prentice Hall Account General Manager is Melissa Haney.
The address of the Richmond office is: 11 SOUTH 12TH STREET
RICHMOND VA, 23218
o Your letter should be three paragraphs.
First paragraph: Explain who you are and why you are writing.
Second paragraph: Talk a little bit about your layout. Do not
repeat all of your comments, but instead, give a general
rationale for the design choices you made. Be sure to point out
anything you are especially pleased with or something that
may be confusing.
Third paragraph: Close by including your contact information
and thanking Ms. Haney for her time.

A two-page book layout with comments to explain your design choices and
specifications.
o Layout should include text and graphics
o Layout should be professional in appearance, and similar to the other
layouts in the existing textbook
o Layout should also be consistent with the meaning of the poem itself
o Comments should be clear and specific: why that color? why that
particular picture? why that font and size? why is the sidebar on that
side instead of the other side?
o Layout should also include at least 4 questions after the passage.
These questions should not be simple comprehension, but should help
a student analyze the poem the way we did in class. Try to include
keywords that correspond with Puritan writing or this time period.
