1.0 Purpose: This procedure covers the requirements and the checks to be carried out during
external surface cleaning and painting of finished equipments to protect their surfaces.
The following paint system shall be applied on CS External surface except gasket race face.
a) Surface Preparation: As per approved drawing.
b) Application of Paint: As per approved drawing.
- Paints shall be supplied in the original undamaged manufacturers containers, complete with
product references, batch numbers and expiry of shelf life clearly shown.
- The paint consignment shall be examined upon receipt to verify that containers are correctly
labeled and that paperwork, confirming product composition and traceability, application
method and health and safety information, is correct.
6.0 METHOD:
6.1 It should be verified that all fabrication of equipment including test is completed and ready for
blasting & painting.
6.2 Surface Preparation: Surface to be painted shall be dry and free from oil, grease, dirt, mil
scale, burrs, weld spatters, rust, paint coating and other foreign matters when
inspecting without magnification.
6.3 Before blasting removal of Oil and Grease & loose material such as weld spatters, rust & any
foreign loose material.
6.4 Blasting: The Dry Sand blasting shall be done in a space specifically marked for it or in a
covered area. The person, performing the blasting operation, shall be equipped with
appropriate blasting nozzles, safety equipments & shall be suitable protected.
6.5 The surfaces such as gasket surface, machined surfaces that are not required to be blasted,

6.6 The blasted surface shall be cleaned with oil free dry forced air to remove the blasting
particles.
7.0 POST BLASTING OPERATION: All traces of blasting shall be removed suitable either by
brushing, following dry compressed air or vacuum cleaning.
a) Mix the contents of primer thoroughly before and during use as per manufacturers
recommendations. It is recommended that primer and thinner used shall be of same
manufacturer. Mixing of different brands is not acceptable.
b) The interval between completion of surface preparation and application of first coat of primer
shall be kept at minimum but not to exceed 4 hours. Time constraint between blasting and
application of paint coating as specified by paint maker shall be followed.
c) The recommendations & application of required paints shall be as per paint manufacturer.
Check the paint batch no. test certificate, date of manufacture, data sheet & type of paint.
e) Paint DFT meter used for checking the dry film thickness of paint shall be calibrated/ verified
with standard strip.
f) For touch up or to obtain required DFT locally, primer / paint to be applied by brush
(manually). Final surface should look uniform
a. First vessel to check visually full surface for sharp edge, weld spatters etc. If found any, to be
removed.
Blasting to be carried out during dry whether & with following conditions
1) Air temperature 100C above dew point.
2) Relative humidity below 85%.
3) Blasting operation shall not be carried out on Surfaces that are wet and also when surfaces
temperature of the steel is less than 30c above the dew point temperature.
4) During painting Metal temperature shall be maintain as per Paint Manufacturer
recommendation.

d. Apply required primer & leave it for curing as per Manufacturers specification. Check DFT.
g. Apply Finish coat as per drawing & leave it for curing. Check DFT.
j. Detail Inspection report to be prepared with details of Atmospheric temp & relative humidity.
k. Blasting & painting not to be carried out during rains, winds, fog, and temperature less than 10 0
C.
