Resolution

Resolution Regarding the Boards Commitment to Ensure that Our Schools are
Equitable and Safe Spaces for All Students


WHEREAS, the fundamental purpose of our district is to give each of our students an
excellent education; and

WHEREAS, we believe that every student should have an equal chance to benefit
from the best educational program our district can provide; and

WHEREAS, equity is a core value of our district which is celebrated in our diversity
and reflected in our commitment to provide the resources and support necessary to
eliminate barriers to success and foster a more equitable future for all of our
students; and

WHEREAS under federal law, all children are entitled to equal access to public
education, regardless of their immigration status or that of their parents; and

WHEREAS, public schools and school districts in Oregon are subject to all federal
and state laws and constitutional provisions prohibiting discrimination, and Eugene
School District 4J promotes nondiscrimination and an environment free of
harassment based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or
expression, national origin, marital status, age or disability; and

WHEREAS, the district is committed to cultivating a safe and supportive learning
environment for all students in our care, which is achieved in part by embracing and
valuing our diversity, and acting quickly to prevent and address any and all issues of
discrimination and harassment in our schools; and

WHEREAS, we recognize that national events and the current political climate have
caused uncertainty and anxiety for many in our communities; and

WHEREAS, in these times, we recognize that our mission is more critical than ever
because we believe that our work with all students can help us bridge our
differences and can help bring us together around respect and understanding rather
than fear; and

WHEREAS, we recognize that thorough staff training with respect to the districts
policies and procedures that impact student safety and privacy will enable our
qualified and caring staff to remain focused on providing all students with the
opportunity to receive an excellent education;

NOW, THEREFORE, the Board of Directors of Eugene School District 4J resolves the
following:

1. That the board is dedicated and committed to taking those actions
authorized by law and district policies to provide inclusive, equitable and
safe learning environments for all students.

2. That the board is dedicated and committed to ensuring that, to the extent
permitted by law, the district policies, procedures and practices reflect the
purposes, values and philosophies reflected in this resolution.

3. That the board is dedicated and committed to ensuring that the districts staff
receive the necessary training with respect to the districts policies,
procedures and practices in order to ensure that all students are provided
with inclusive, equitable and safe learning environments.
