Foreword
InthisdocumenttheAAOmeansAcerAspireOne.ThesmallerandcheaperAAO
modelscomewithoutanyharddiskandwithLinuxinstalled.UnfortunatelytheLinux
installedisveryrestrictedandcannotbeeasilyexpanded.Itevenlooksthattheyhave
spentalotofenergytopreventpeoplelikemetocustomizetheAAOtotheirneeds.I
wanttosynchronizedataontheAAOwithmyothercomputers,Iwanttoinstall
certainprogramsthatIlike,soIwasforcedtolookforsomealternatives.

SellingaPCwithLinux,meansgivingsupport.AsLinuxAdministratoryouare
allowedtodoallkindofthingsthatcouldresultincompletelycrash.Thismeans,the
onewhosoldaLinuxPCneedstobepreparedtogivealotofsupport.Inthispointof
viewIfullyunderstandthattheAOOLinuxfromAcerhasturnedonsome
restrictions.Howevercertainpeoplelikemewouldliketobefulladministratorson
theircomputers!

Aboutthisdocument
InthisdocumentIusethetermAAOLinpusfortheAcerversionofLinpus,thereis
theoriginalLinpusversionthatworksonallkindofPC'sanddoesnotdoallthenasty
thingsthatAAOLinpusdoes.

WhenIboughtmyAAOIusedthecheapestversionavailabletomethattime,sinceI
plannedtoinstallmyselfaLinuxdistributiononit.MyAAOisanModelNo:ZG5

ThisguideshowssometrickshowtohaveitmoreopenandhowtoinstallotherLinux
distributionstotheAAO.ThefinalgoalistohaveaSDcardthatholdsGentooLinux
andleavestheoriginalLinpusLinuxontheinternalSSD.

1.3.Workingasroot
ToworkasrootyouhavetousethepasswordthatgotsetwhentheAAOgotturned
onthefirsttime.Opentheterminaltypesuandtypetherootpasswordtobringyou
intheconsoleortypethunartogetthefilemanagerasroot.

1.4.Gettingthewholemenu
Withtheterminalopen,typesuandgivetherootpassword.Typexfce-setting-
show,thenclicktheDesktopicon,thenclickthetabBehaviorandclickoncheck
boxShowdesktopmenuonrightclick.Nowwhenyouclickintothedesktopyou
getthewellknownmenuwithmuchmorecommands.Thereisalsoasystem
commandwhereyoufindthecommandAdd/RemoveSoftware.

1.5.Rotatingthescreen
IusetheAAOasbook,butbooksareusuallynotlandscape.
Openaterminalandtypexrandr -o right
xrandr -o normaltogoback
Itworksnicelybutthetouchpadcannotberotated.LuckilywhenyouhaveaUSB
mouse.

2. Networking
Typehostnameintheconsoleandyouwillseethatthehostnameislocalhost.To
integratetheAspireOnetoanetworkitobviouslyrequiresanothername.Itcould
easilybemodifiedbyhostname <new hostname>howeveritisnotvolatile.
TheFAQAcerhelppointstoafilethatdoesnotexistanymore.

Note:Theafiles/etc/HOSTNAME,and/etc/hostshowevergetalwaysoverwritten.

Thefile/etc/sysconfig/networkistheplacetochange
HOSTNAME=localhost.localdomain
to
HOSTNAME=aspire.localdomain
howeveratbootanastymessagesappears.

NextproblemisthattheDHCPserverinsidemyADSLrouterdoesnotshowthehost
name.ThehostnameoftheAspireOneneedstobeknown,sincetheIPaddressisnot
alwaysthesame.

Addinourhostcomputer/etc/hoststheaspiretothelistofknownhosts.
Doping aspire.

Conclusion:TohavenetworkinginstallanotherLinuxdistribution(nottheAAO
Linpus,maybetheoriginalLinpus).

3. Recovering
Incriticalmomentswhensometestmadethesystemunrecoverableyoucanrestore
theinternaldisk.YouneedtoattachanexternalCD/DVDdriveviaUSB(verifythat
youdonotuseaDVDinaCDonlydrive).Thecheapestwayisopenyourdesktop
PCandusetheoneinside.AssumingitisaIDEdrive,buyaIDEtoUSBadapter,
removetheIDEcableandplugintheIDEtoUSBadapter.Leavethepowercable
attachedtothedesktop.NowpowerupthedesktopandthentheAAObootsupfrom
theDVD(whentheBIOSissetforthatorpressF 1 2 toshowthebootdevicelist
menu).

3.1.Recoveringfromabuggytest
Ifyouknowwhatyoudidandwhatyouhavetoremove,buttheAAOdoesn'tboot
anymore.
BootfromaUSBCDdriverunninge.g.http://www.knoppix.orgversion5.0
Beforeyoustartworkingtoomuch,settheproperkeyboardlayout.Inthelowerright
cornerthereisaUSflag,clicktheregointothekeyboardsettingwindowanddoyour
changes.
Thehdc1iconhasbeenpoppeduponthedesktop,leftmouseclickit,tosetthe
permissionssoallcanwriteitandalsoremovethereadonlycheckboxunderthe
devicetab.ThendoubleclicktheicontoopenkonquerortheKDEfilemanager.

Toworkasroot,gointotheterminalandtypesu.Thereisnorootpassword.Butyou
cansetonewithpasswd.Havingandknowingarootpassword,konquerorcanbe
startedinsuperusermode(=asroot).ItisinthemenuSystem>More
Applications.Nowyoushouldbeabletoperformallwritestosystemfilestorecover
fromyourfaultytest.

3.2.UsingtheacerrecoveringDVD
YoucaneitherrestoretheAAOviarecoveryCDorcreateaUSBbootstickforthe
andfuturerecoveries.Thebootsstickmustbe<=4GByteand>=2GByteasstatedin
therecoveryinstructions.http://www.linpus.comholdssomeISOimagestoburna
recoveryDVDfortheAAOthatmighthaveanewerversion.Practicaltestshowed
thatitworkswell,howeverUSBstickslargerthan2GBytemustbeused.

4. AddingHardwaretotheAAO

4.1.Pluginstuff
USBHarddisksor
Stickscanbeeasily
addedtotheAAOand
theBIOSsupports
bootingfromit.The
AAOservicemanual
canbeobtainedfrom
theInternetshowing
howtoopentheAAO.
HoweverAAO's
withoutharddiskscan
notbeequippedlater
onwithaharddisk
sincetheconnectoris
notsolderedontothe
motherboard.The
internalSSDseemstohaveitsproprietaryconnector,soanupgradeisprobablynot
possible.ThereforethecleanestwaytoexpandtheAAOisusingtheSDcardsloton
thelowerleftcorneroftheAAO,itismarkedwiththetextStorageExtension.
DrawbacksareyoucannotbootfromthereandAAOLinpusisconfiguredinaway
thatitautomaticallywritesstuffthere.

4.2.Batteries
ThebatteriesandtheWindowsoperatingsystemarehavingthemostimpacttothe
priceofanNetbook.MylowcostAcerAspireOneZG5comeswitha10.8V
2200mAhstandardcapacitybatterypack,noWindowsandnoharddisk.Thebattery
doesnolastforawholedaybusinesstrip.Luckilythereareothersizesavailable,but
notataverylowprice:

4.3.Solidstatemediaandlifetimeconcerns
Alotofdiscussionisgoingonregardinginstallationtosolidstatemediaasthe
internalSSD,USBsticksandFlashcards(asMMC/SDcards).Luckily,thereisalsoa
lotofdevelopmentgoingonandmanythingsoncewrittenmightbeoutdatedandno
moretrue.

Solidstatemediahavelimitedlifetimeduetothelimitednumbersofwritecycles.
Mostlyitisforgottenthatalsomechanicalharddiskshavealimitedlifetimetoo.The
installationofLinuxtoaMMC/SDcardseemsnotcritical,sinceafteracoupleof
yearsIprobablydecidetobuyabiggerandcheaperMMC/SDcard,thiswillprobably
behappenbeforeitreachesitslifetime.InthepastIusedasmall20GByteUSBhard
diskhavinginstalledLinux.IhadtorepairittwiceduetoabrokenUSBcable.Soa
32GByteUSBstickthathashalfthepriceofwhatIspentfortheharddiskhas
becomeanoption.

However,tonotjeopardizelifetimeofsolidstatemedia,Iavoidfrequentwritesto
thosemedia,soIavoidusingswapspaceonFlashmedia.Swaphasbeeninventedto
expandRAMtoHarddiskspace.Insteadofusingswaponsolidstatemediaasahard
disk,itisprobablybettertoupgradetheRAM.

InstallingGentooonaSDcardandusingtheinternalSSDjustforboot(=readonly)
isagoodconceptregardinglifetimeofthesolidstatemedia.However,currentlyIuse
theoriginalswappartitionoftheinternalSSD.

5. InstalltheoriginalLinpus
Installinglinpuslitefromhttp://www.linpus.comthatismoreopenthanlinpusfrom
acercanbedoneeasily.Butneedtobefinetuned(WLANdoesnotworkand
probablyotherstuffaswell).MaybeLinpusoffersinthefutureaversioncustomized
fortheAAO.

6. InstallGentooLinuxonaMMC/SDcard
LargerMMC/SDcardsarenowaffordable.TohaveafullblownKDEGentoo
desktopsystemrunningandhavespaceforthefuturea32GByteMMC/SDcardis
recommended.GentooLinuxhttp://www.gentoo.orgcouldalsoinstalledonthe
internalSSD,however8GBytewouldbeusedupquicklyandahybridversionwith
somefilesontheMMC/SDcardandsomeontheinternalSSDwouldbetheresult.
FinallyLinpuswouldbelost.LinpuscanbeusedasabackupLinuxduringthesetup
ofGentoo.ItprobablytakesawhileuntileverythingrunsonGentooasdesiredwith
alltherequireddevicedrivers.DuringsetupofGentooitishelpfultofindouthow
LinpusdealswiththeAAO.SinceGentooisametaLinuxdistributionthatcanbe
updatedonadailybasetohaveallthetimeactualversions,itmightbehappenthat

somefeaturesgetlostafterupdates,sowhenyouneedsomethingurgentlythatruns,
switchbacktolinpus.

SincetheBIOSdoesnotsupporttobootfromtheMMC/SDslot,theinternalSSD
willbeusedtoboot.Thismeans,itwillholdthebootloaderandthekernels.The
1GByteswapspacethattheSSDofferscanalsobeusedforGentoo.Afterthekernel
hasbooteditcanusetheLinuxkerneldevicedriverincludedinthekerneltoaccess
theMMC/SDcard.

Note:TheevolutionhascreateddifferentSD(SecureDigital)cardstandards.
OriginallythereweretheMultiMediaCards(MMC)thatgotsupersededbySDcards.
StandardSDcardsareavailableupto4GByte.HighCapacitySDHCCardsgoupto
32GByte.SmallandolderSDcardreaderscannothandlelargeMMC/SDcards.
SDXCareeXtendedCapacitycardsthatwillsupportto2TByte.LuckilytheAcer
supportsSDHCcardsupto32GByte.SmallandolderSDCardreadersmightnotbe
abletoreadsuchSDHCcards.

6.1.TheStorageExpansionMMC/SDslotontheAAO
TheMMC/SDcardslotonthelowerrightcornerisforeseentoexpandtheinternal
SSD.ThisisdoneunderLinpusviaavolumemanagerthatautomaticallymergesboth
discsMMC/SDcardandinternalSSD.Thiscanbeconsiderednice,butitisannoying
whenacleanstandaloneLinuxversionisconsideredtobeinstalledontheMMC/SD
card.

InsteadoftryingtomakeLinpusbehavedifferentlyitiseasiertofollowthefollowing
strategy:
WheninstallingthingstotheMMC/SDcardunderLinpus,usetheslotonthe
right.
WhenworkingandbootingGentooorworkwithLinpususetheleftMMC/SD
slot.

Typefdisk -ltoseewhatyouhave:
/dev/sda1istheinternalSSDthe*showsthatthisisabootabledisk
/dev/sda2isalsotheinternalSSDbutthisistheswappartitions

/dev/mcblk0p1istheMMC/SDcardreadytogetGentooLinux!Thedevfilecould
alsobesomethingas/dev/mcblk1p1,sinceitisincrementedwhencardsgetplugged
inandout.

6.2.Preparethebootloader
Aspirebootswithgrub,butthereseemstobeagrubversionthatdoesnotshowthe
menutoselectdifferentbootconfigurations.Renametheacergrubdirectoryto
grubacer.Howeveravoidtoshutdown,sinceitwillnotbootanymore.Copygrub
binariesoverfromaGentooPC(standardpentium)toanewlycreatedgrubdirectory
andusegrub.conffromlinpus.Deletethehiddenmenulineandgiveatimeout=5for5
seconds.Copyoverthesplashimagefromthegrubacer,howeveritdoesnotwork,
sincethesplash.xpm.gzcontainsasubdirectoryinside.Thereforeunzipit,gotothe
splash.xpmsubdirectoryandgzip splash.xpmtogetridofthesubdirectory.
Thencopythenewsplash.xpm.gzto/boot/grubanddeletethe/boot/grub/splash.xpm
directory.NowduringthenextbootsequencegrubpopsupshowingtheLinuxsplash
screenandthemenu.Thenthemenucanbeexpandedtocontainthelinesbooting
gentooLinuxfromtheSDcard,butalsotostilluseLinpusontheacerinternalSSD.

6.3.InstallGentoo
GentoocanbeinstalledusingLinpusandpluggingintheSDcardontherightupper
SDslot,soLinpusleavesitalone.Followtheinstallationsfrom
http://www.gentoo.orghoweverskipthegrubandkernelinstallation,sinceyouhave
themalready.Don'tbeworriedyoucanupdatethemlater.Gentooisasourcecode
distributionwhereyouhavetocompileforyourCPU.DuringtheGentooinstallation
youneedtoknowthecompilerflags.Heretheyare:

Itiswisetoemerge mcthemidnightcommanderduringtheinstallationwhenyou
arenotacommandlinespecialist.DuringinstallationofGentoousethedesktop

6.5.CompilingthekernelforGentoo
Firstyoucanusethesamekernelaslinususes,butwhenhavingGentoo,youliketo
customizeit.Whencompilingthekernelthereistheoptioninthegeneralsetupto
createalocalversion.Astringwillbeaddedtothenameofthekernel,
/lib/modules/<kernel><string>thisstringcausesproblemwithmodprobe(probably
notjust)onGentoo(andnotjustformodprobe)sodisablethiskerneloptionwhen
buildingakernel.

6.6.AccessingtheMMC/SD
TherearedriversnecessarytoaccesstheMMC/SDcard.Thedriversaremmc_core,
mmc_blockandsdhci.Theyaredeliveredwiththekernelsourceunderdevicedrivers
=>MMC/SDcardsupport=>SecureDigitalHostControllerInterfaceSupport.The
AAOhasakernelwherethosedriversarecompiledasmodule.Thereforethekernel
willnotbeabletoaccessthesdcardduringbootandwillstuckwithkernelpanics.
Theeasiestwayistocreateakernelwiththosemodulesbuiltintoit.Thismakesit
alsoeasytousemoreuptodatekernelsources.

AnothersmallissueisthattheMMC/SDcarddriverwillnotbereadywhenthe
kernelwantstoaccessthefilesonit.Passingviagrubtheparameterrootdelaysolves
thisissue.

EnablethekernelMMC/SDoptionUNSAFE_RESUMEtonotunmountthe
MMC/SDcardwhengointosuspendmode.Ifitwouldunmountit,thenwhenawake,
itwouldremountitunderanotherdevicenameandwouldobviouslygetting
confused.

Note:IfyouwanttoreadtheSD/MMCcardonaothercomputerbeawarethatmany
cheapSD/MMCcardreadersarenotabletoread32GBytelargeSD/MMCcards.

TheAAOusesr8101,theEthernetdriverforthePCIexpressfastEthernetcontroller
fromrealtek.Howeverthisdriverdoesnotexistanymoreinthenewestlinuxkernels.
Usinghttp://www.knoppix.orgtherealtekr8169drivergotloadedinsteadandworks
fine.

6.8.Wireless
UsinglspcishowsthatthereisaAtherosAR242xwirelesspciadapter.Thatuses
thekernelmoduleath5k.Atheros5xxxwirelesscardssupporthastobeaddedinthe
kerneltogetthedriverath5k.Analternativewouldbendiswrapperusingthe
microsoftdrivers.

Settheuseflagmadwifisinceath5kcomesfromthemadwifidevelopers,then
emerge wireless-tools(alwaysrequired)andemerge
wpa_supplicant.
Don'tconfiguretoomuchin/etc/conf.d/netitisactuallyokwhenthisfileis
completelyempty.Justunmaskandemerge knetworkmanageroncestarted
manuallyithastheoptiontorestartautomaticallyonnextrestartofKDE.Thereis
alsoastartscript/etc/conf.d/NetworkManager.

NowusingKnetworkManageryouhaveGUIforWlan,butalsoforthewired
network.

6.9.Webcam
Createakernelwiththeuvcdriver.AAOLinpususesucview,inthesunriseoverlay
thereisanebuildforit.

6.10.ConfigureX
In/etc/make.confadd

Theconfigurationworksstraightforwardandacompizdesktopisevenpossible.

ToconfiguretheVGAportcheckman intelandmodify/etc/X11/xorg.conf.Then
typexrandthatprintstheconfigurationandxrandr --autotoenabletheport.
Notescreensarenotmonitors,sowhenyouhaveonescreenithastobelinkedtoboth
ports.SincetheaspirehasawidescreenandprobablyanattachedCRTnot,oneofthe
twodeviceshastoadapttotheotherone.
