Research Assignment: Breaking Down the Brain

Your group has been assigned a structure of the brain. Your task is to research and
present the function of your structure, its associated sub-structures, and a disease that
affects your assigned brain structure. The structures are listed below.

1. Myelencephalon.
2. Metencephalon.
3. Mesencephalon.
4. Diencephalon.
5. Telencephalon.
6. Cranial Nerves.

Your group will present your findings in a format of your choice. Please consult your
teacher about your format before proceeding.

Things to Note:

o Each group will submit one final copy of their research assignment.
o Each group member must complete a reflection regarding their contribution to the
assignment, but also how effective their group worked together to complete it.
o Each group will present their findings to the class (max. 10 minutes).
o Sample presentation formats:
o Prezi
o Dramatic skit
o Storybook
o Electronic media (e.g. Popplet)
o Diorama of structure
o Song (lyrics must be included and approved)

Nervous System

Last class, we learned that neurons are the fundamental unit of the nervous
system. Today, we are going to learn about the organization of the nervous
system.

The nervous system is split into 2 parts the central nervous system &
peripheral nervous system. Each system is responsible for coordinating set
functions in our body.
The central nervous system is the main control center that integrates all
sensory information and sends this information to execute a function in the
body. It is comprised of 2 parts the brain and spinal cord.

The peripheral nervous system connects the central nervous system to the
muscles, limbs, and organs of our body. It is divided into several parts:

1. Somatic nervous system - responsible for coordinating our skeletal

muscles and reflexes
2. Autonomic nervous system - responsible for smooth and cardiac
muscle; consists of two parts
a. Sympathetic consumes energy (e.g. increases heart rate)
b. Parasympathetic conserves energy (e.g. decreases heart
rate)
