Science is the Key

Do you think that the success of Dolly the cloned sheep is one of the great steps of

scientific development? Maybe this is the very beginning of Aldous Huxleys Brave New

World. In Brave New World, people are made in bottle in a lab and separated into classes,

which are Alphas, Betas, Deltas, Gamma and Epsilons. There are 10 world controllers who

have all the power. Science is the tool for a group of people to destroy humanity as shown by

Bokanovsky process, soma, and sleep-teaching.

Bokanovsky process inhibits self-ability. Bokanovsky process is the processes that

made and cloned humans then separate them into classes. For example, the lab technician will

put the alcohol in Epsilons blood and give less oxygen to Epsilons embryo. As the Director

of hatchery and conditioning said while he gives the lecture to the kids who come for sight-

seeing at Central London hatchery and conditioning center. Hasnt it occurred to you that an

Epsilon embryo must have an Epsilon environment as well as an Epsilon heredity? (Huxley,

p.11). The quote shows that society in this world look down on the lower classes. The

hatchery and conditioning center cloned many low classes and make them born dump. So,

they wont question about the world or how bad their life are. The Lab technicians judge and

choose the embryos to be lower classes such as Gamma and Epsilon without give any of them

a chance to show what they can be or good at. Also, in their works place, they adopt the T-

model idea from Ford which is the same person do the same job over and over again. But, as

badly theirs life are, the government realize that people wont be happy and might protest this

idea someday. So, the government found Soma.

 Soma made people drunk in happiness and never feel bad of anything. Soma is the

happy drug that government hand them for free and encourage people to take all the time.

When Lenina go to the savage reservation with Bernard, she has been through many things

that totally different from what she lives what her mind had been set. A gramme is better

than a damn, said Lenina mechanically from behind her hands. I wish I had my soma

(Huxley, p.100). According from the quote, it shows that soma plays important role in the

society. People are using soma naturally in their everyday life. They use soma to avoid the

negative thinking and bad feeling. This will made people happy all the time and never have

any question about the world. The government use soma to control the low classes by give

soma to make them happy in the most boring world ever. But, there are also other factors that

lead to people conciseness which is the sleep-teaching.

The sleep-teaching or hypnopaedia is the brain washing process to fix the world state

people to think and to do in certain way that the controllers want. Every citizen had got the

conditioning since theyre born. In the conditioning center, there are many classes which one

of them is the sleep-teaching. Before the children wake up, the lab technician will repeat the

same sentences for many times. As, the Alpha-plus, Helmholtz said while hes talking to

Mustapha Mond, one of the controllers, about what is the real science and he discover that he

has been misunderstood for his whole life. But were always saying that science is

everything. Its an hypnopaedic platitude. (Huxley, p .198). Helmholtz is the example of

people in world state who have ideas in which sleep-teaching had told them. When people are

conditioning, they get the brain washing while theyre sleeping as the world state people

called sleep-teaching. The sentences that said in the sleep-teaching will stick in peoples

mind which made them think and do things in certain ways that the controllers want. And this

made people never think by themselves or curious about the world. Everyone is thinking of

themselves
 If science has been used in a wrong way, it will cause great disadvantage to the

society. As shown in the Bokanovsky process, soma, and sleep-teaching that the government

use science to control humans and take the advantages from citizens. Brave New World is the

dystopia novel which Huxley shows the theme that science is the tool to destroy humanity.
