Standards Addressed:
S2L2. Students will recognize the effects of pollution and humans on the environment.
a) Explain the effects of pollution (such as littering) to the habitats of plants and animals.
b) Identify ways to protect the environment.
-Conservation of resources
-Recycling of materials

Blooms Level of Critical Thinking:

Description of how to implement in the class:
I will introduce this lesson with a discussion regarding pollution, humans and their effect on the
environment. Brain Pop and the videos will serve as my introduction to the lesson. Students will
record data creating a graph on NCES Create a Graph. They will collect data of how much trash they
see in a specific area outside. We will discuss our data as a class, and then they will record the data in
their graph. As the teacher I will check their progress using a checklist as a formative assessment.
Their final product will be my summative assessment at the conclusion of the project. The students
will then come up with a plan to reduce the amount of trash by a certain percentage. They will
explain their idea, write it in Word and then include their new potential data after their solution is
put into place. This will give the students a visual representation of their contributions to helping the
environment. By having the students create their own graph with the data they collect and the
decrease in pollution due to their solution they will see that they have the power to make a difference
in the world. They will also understand that they can understand a situation, apply what they know to
help solve the problem, analyze their options and current situation, as well as evaluate their data and
create a solution to their problem. This activity is a great problem solving activity as well as an
activity that will boost the students confidence in making a change in their environment.
Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi):
The learning experience of this lesson best fits LoTi Level 3. Technology is being used, students are
using technology for central, content-related activities that are monitored and assessed by the
teacher, (data recorded in the graphs the students create// paragraph they type in word about their
solution), the learning experience is student centered and applied to the real world. Students assume
the role of a scientist (data collector), learning tasks have multiple results, (different results in
different areas of choice), students are creating a graph with their statistics and how their solutions
could work (making a change in their environment), and students will discuss their ideas and
products with the class. They will compare their ideas with each other and work together to complete
the tasks.

Description of the sample spreadsheet and graph/chart provided *:

Students will create their graphs using NCES Create a Graph. They will also write up their solution to
helping reduce pollution in their specific area of research. They will show the decrease in pollution
after they (example) insert a trash can and recycling bin in the area and show the change through
their graph as a result of their efforts. Students will have a visual representation of how their efforts
make a change on the environment.

Other comments about your proposed spreadsheet/graph/chart activity:

I am excited to see the change that my students are capable of making for their environment!
Everyone can help, even if it is a big or small effort!
