Workshop on Coherent Pension Policy in Africa

The World Bank, in collaboration with pension institutions in Cte d'Ivoire, is organizing a workshop on
Coherent Pension Policy in Africa in Abidjan during February 7-9, 2017. The objective of the workshop is to
promote an open discussion about pension systems of the participating African countries and to bring together
practitioners and experts to look for ways to address common challenges and share their experiences. The
workshop will bring together government officials from pension institutions, ministries and supervisory agencies
from twelve countries (Benin, Cte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Mali,
Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo) as well as representatives from regional pensions
institutions (CIPRES and ISSA).

Specifically, the workshop will frame the discussion on five salient policy questions. Sessions will cover (i)
designing fiscally and socially sustainable pension systems; (ii) the role of pre-funding in pension policy and
governance and investment policy for pension systems (iii) the role of defined contribution schemes and necessary
pre-conditions for these schemes; (iv) civil service pension reform; and (v) improving pension administration
and delivery systems. In addition to presentations by experts from the World Bank and regional pension
institutions, representatives from participating countries will serve as speakers to share their experiences.
