4.

1 Library as a Learning Resource

4.2.1 Does the library have an Advisory Committee? Specify the composition of such a
committee. What significant initiatives have been implemented by the committee to
render the library, student/user friendly?

Yes.

The Advisory Committee periodically meets to discuss various issues related to Library
facilities and services and advises suitable solutions for better functioning. It acts as an internal
auditor for quality checking and provides support and guidance. To render the library user friendly,
the committee meets regularly to discuss and finalize proposed policies, budget, specific issues and
suggestions to the library. The committee also studies the library needs and issues of its
maintenance. Library Advisory committee consists of Principal, Registrar, Chief Librarian, and
Members from various departments. The Institution has provided a central library in the campus
with all facilities. Although VVIET has a common library but for ease of the students, each
department has its own library which is more useful for the concerned department

The major responsibilities of the committee are to:

Budget Planning.
Procure relevant books & subscribe related periodicals/Journals, and Electronic Resources
Make provision for adequate library services.
Employ competent and required Library staff.
Orientation Program
Implementation of ICT in library services

User Satisfaction
Organizing workshop/Conference/Seminar
Other Activities like Book Exhibition, quiz Competition, etc.,.

The Library Advisory Committee meets frequently to review & discuss the above
mentioned aspects for smooth functioning.

The E-resource access facility is provided across the campus. Apart from this, 1 touch
screen systems high configuration computers are kept to search the Online Public Access Catalogue
(OPAC) near Circulation counter. Two computers are used by the library staff for circulation,
accessioning, cataloguing, periodicals maintenance, requisition, budgeting & acquisition, usage &
reading analysis, bar coding generation, report generation, searching etc. The library has internet
connectivity via Broadband with a band width of 2 mbps. Internet facility is provided for all the
computers to access wide information. In the Library students/staff can take scan documents in all
working days. Reprographic facility is available in the campus.

All the required documents like syllabus, previous years question papers, Project reports,
Faculty publications, etc.,. are made available in the Institute repository by using Dspace digital
software.
It is versatile E-Learning platform with live interaction, online classes, Meetings,
workshops, Trainings, etc. It enables a teacher to reach out to thousands of students across globally.

What significant initiatives have been implemented by the committee to render the Library
student/user friendly?

The Institution has resourceful library which is accessible to all categories of users. The
library has two floors. This area is divided into Book Section, Reading section, Discussion Rooms,
Digital Library, property counter and Newspapers Section. A Reference section is provided to refer
reference books, competitive exam books, Novels, journals, back volumes of periodicals,
newspaper clippings & project reports.
For convenience of the users, the books & interrelated subjects are systematically arranged
section wise in the book-shelves. Open access system is followed which allows users to have direct
access to the book shelf & can locate the books of their interest without any difficulty. Location of
books is made easy with the help of rack index provided on each rack. Assistance of the library
staff can be taken whenever necessary.

The library at the beginning of the issue library card to each student, which will enable
them to have access to the library. At a time the borrower can borrow three books, two periodicals,
and two magazines CD/DVD for a period of two weeks and they can also renew and reserve the
books. Similarly the faculty members are issued borrowing 6 books, periodicals, and two
magazines CD/DVD for a period of one semester and they can also renew.

Reference books are issued to students for overnight and also issue these books for Xerox
against deposit of their Institution identity card and the same has to be returned within a hour For
security reasons, the user has to deposit their belongings in the property counter, before getting
access to the book-shelf. In the Library Surveillance cameras are installed to avoid any theft,
damages etc.

Library automation: The Library is automated through Management Package Newgenlib
for feasible gate entry, circulation and OPAC. CCTV with 3 cameras is installed for
surveillance.

books, Question papers, question bank, study materials prepared at the Institution, and
copies of student project reports, books and research articles published by the faculty.

Manuscripts - The library treasures the news clippings and photo albums on the events of the
institution.
Reference: In addition to the conventional reference service section, Encyclopedias,
Dictionaries, Handbooks, Theses & Dissertations, Project Reports, Audio Video Reference
through CDs and Web Based References are also made available.

Referral Service:

Reprography: The institution has an outsourced Photocopying facility.

ILL (Inter Library Loan Service): The inter library loan service is made available for the
users through Delnet and other Engineering college library.

Information Deployment and Notification: Information available is deployed and notified


to the benefit of the students. Information on Current Affairs, Employment Opportunities
and Competitive Examinations are displayed on the notice boards. Information pertaining to
the search engines and site addresses is also displayed at the library internet center. The data
about the reservation of books is also displayed in the library for the convenience of the
users. Further circulars related to general information are also displayed on the notice board
and Department Circular. Reminders about book returns are sent through emails and sms to
the borrowers.

OPAC: The information pertaining to the bibliographic references and the descriptions of
books is entered in the library management package Newgenlib

Internet Access: Three computers, one printer and one scanner are available for the use of
the staff and the students from 9:00AM to 5.30PM. Provision to download and print online
resources is also available.

Downloads: Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash Player, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet
Explorer, and free Antivirus Software are available. Certain significant articles from free e-
journals and e-books are downloaded and stacked for readers.

Reading list/Bibliography compilation: The bibliographic data is compiled for subject-


wise books and text books, projects reports and the reading list on specific topic is provided
to the users with the help of OPAC

In-house/remote access to e-resources: In house resources like online resources, syllabus,


question papers, lesson module can be accessed in the campus.

User Orientation: New users at the beginning of the academic year are provided orientation
about reading habit, rules and regulations, library resources, infrastructure facilities, time
schedule, circulation of books, and assistance rendered by the library staff.

Assistance in searching databases: The users are instructed about the search strategy to the
users. They are assisted for access to the printed resources through OPAC. They are guided
by the library staff in-charge of Digital library about search engine, site addresses and online
resources

4.2.8 What are the special facilities offered by the library to the visually/physically challenged
persons? Give details.

The library staffs are always ready to assist the physically challenged people in obtaining the
Materials / documents. They are usually given top priority during the issuing of Books.

4.2.9 Does the library get the feedback from its users? If yes, how is it analyzed and used for
improving the library services. (What strategies are deployed by the Library to collect feedback
from users? How is the feedback analyzed and used for further improvement of the library
services?). Did the library organize workshop/s for students, teachers, non-teaching staff of the
Institution to facilitate better library usage?

YES.

In addition to the oral feedback, a questionnaire is distributed among students and staff
members. The accumulated data is put in a tabular form and analyzed by the no. of responses and
then statistical methods like percentage is used to tabulate the data.

The feedback is later utilized for qualitative improvement of library. A Suggestion Box is
kept at the Library. Suggestions from staff and students are scrutinized periodically and necessary
action will be taken by the Library Committee

Users suggestions are seriously considered for further improvements of library services and
implementation of new technologies by providing faster service and increasing satisfaction level of
the users.

A one day Workshop was organized on Review of Literature 25th March 2015.
One Day Workshop was organized on Avoiding the Risks of Plagiarism 10th October 2015.
Orientation program to Staff and students once in a year.
