Description of how to implement in the class
In this lesson students will collect data from their classmates to determine the total number of
favorite pets within the class. Once their data is collected, they will use a basic productivity
spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel), to input their prospective data. This will promote usage of this tool,
and allow students to learn how to use a spreadsheet with various data. I will model the various
input of the data into the spreadsheet for them to have an understanding of where the totals go into
the various cells. Once the spreadsheet is completed, they will create a bar graph, which will indicate
the various totals of their data. This will help them to evaluate the differences of their data to see
which totals are higher or lower. In addition, they will present their findings to their classmates.
This learning activity, using a basic productivity tool, will help these students have a better
understanding of how to take certain data, plug it into a spreadsheet, and create an output of
information that will enable them to better categorize their findings.
Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi):
This learning experience uses a LoTi level 3. Students are using technology in which they are asked
to think on higher levels, such as applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating data. By implementing
a spreadsheet and graph, they are producing a product that can be utilized in their learning standard.
Description of the sample spreadsheet and graph/chart provided *:
Listed below, you will find an example of a spreadsheet and graph, titled, What is Your Favorite Pet?
Data has been plugged in for you to see an example of how many students chose a particular favorite
pet. The data is shown in an Excel spreadsheet and then a graph to reflect that data. Students will
create their own spreadsheet and graph using this example first, then given another prompted
category for them to develop an additional spreadsheet/graph.
