writing. Students will utilise their critical thinking skills to delve into concept
based work.
Class Requirements:
Think of this class as your OASIS from the rest of school. This is where you should feel free and
comfortable to express yourself. This is a place where it is safe to explore. There are some
guidelines to follow. Be present, enjoy creating and be open to the possibilities, but most
importantly please RESPECT your classmates, your instructor and your classroom.

I EXPECT:

R-E-S-P-E-C-T!!
Silence from the rest of the class when I am talking, or another is talking
Amazing things from each of my students
Creativity, diligence, expressiveness, exploration, struggle, frustration, determination,
commitment
You to come to classon time
You to participate in class
You to take responsibility for your work make-up work that is missed, work outside of class
The best you can give each day. Some days are better than others. Let me know when things
are difficult. I will do my best to help.
You to clean up your messes, and yes.sometimes messes that are not yours
* you are not finished cleaning if you just clean your mess. Cleaning is collaborative so if you are
finished cleaning your space I expect you to help clean the entire room with your peers. This can affect
your studio grade! *
Respect of other people and their property, including the art rooms
No cell phones, unless we are using them for projects or I have told you that you can use it
for music.
Discussions to be appropriate.
Language and attitude that is respectful of all races, creeds, religions, colors, gender, national
origins, disabilities and sexual orientation

*RESPONSIBILITY*
Part of being in the art room and part of your professionalism grade is properly cleaning up and
using materials properly. You should take responsibility for the items and equipment you have
used during class. I will give you ample time to clean up every class period but if you fail to clean
up properly or if you misuse tools it will affect your grade.

* FAIL*
I know this is a weird requirement, but basically failure is freedom. I dont mean failing to show
up or do the work, you will fail if you do that. What I mean is feel free to mess up. Nothing is
perfect when it comes to art. Success in the class is based on your process rather than the
product. I would much rather see you go through the trials and tribulations of making
something and it not work out the way you intended rather than just making something perfect.
Grading:

Professionalism/Studio Work: 60%

Participation, support, and respect in all phases of this course is imperative. The class
dynamic depends on your energy, initiative, attitude, productivity and willingness to get
involved in group discussion and critiques. You will be discussing other students art work
in critiques, do not put anyone down, your opinion is useful not hurtful. You are expected
to clean up as well as practice safe and thoughtful use of materials, tools and facilities.

NOTE ON TECHNOLOGY: I will take up phones during demonstrations. You will be allowed to
listen to music with your headphones at a reasonable volume on a case to case basis. I reserve
the right to take your technology away if you abuse it and send you to the Directors Office.

Sketchbook: 10%
You will be required to keep a sketchbook. Throughout the semester your sketchbook
or online blog should be filled with inspiration, drawings, idea sketches, notes, found
objects, whatever your heart desires. This is not a scrapbook! This is where you translate
your ideas, this is your sanctuary.

Final Projects: 30%

Your final projects matter the most. We will critique final projects and have an open
discussion about what you have made. Each semester you will have three final projects
that you will get to work on for two weeks at a time. Your final projects should have a
clear concept. A concept allows you to explain the reasons why you are making what
you are making. Sometimes, the concept comes as you are making it and that is OK too.
The final projects are designed so that you are able to express your own voice, but you
need to be able to explain what it is you are trying to say.
How I grade individual (and group) art works:
Art is very subjective. There is no right or wrong way to make art, therefore
understanding how grading works can be complicated. If you try and push beyond your
limits you will see that result in your grade, even if the outcome is not the most beautiful
piece of work. Part of being an artist, as mentioned before, is learning from your
mistakes so I encourage mistake-making (you will see I do this ALL of the time).

Here is a breakdown of what I am looking for when I grade an individual piece of

artwork:

1. Growth: 20%
How have your skills improved? Have you built upon previous skills you have?
This is where I look at how far you have come and assess your progress.
2. Craftsmanship: 20%
Have you carefully crafted this work? What is the quality of the work?
3. Technique: 20%
Have you understood the technique that is being taught and how have you incorporated it into
your work?
4. Use of materials: 20%
Have you used your materials wisely? How have you learned to master the material?
5.Creativity and Innovation: 20%
How is your point of view or voice expressed through the work and is it able to be clearly
comprehended?

Note that some of the assessment can vary from assignment to assignment. You will also be
asked to self-assess your own work each lesson.
