CAMPO DE ESTUDIO
Resultados parciales de la investigacin realizada sobre las
medidas y proporciones que se encuentran en las esculturas El
Arquitecto del Plano y El Arquitecto con Regla, motivaron
el estudio de medidas lineales utilizadas en la antigedad en
el Oriente Medio, con la hiptesis de que se encontrara en el
dimensionamiento de ellas la presencia de proporciones
antropomtricas.
Despus de un anlisis preliminar de un conjunto de sistemas
de medida lineales, se defini como campo de estudio dos
series directamente relacionadas con la poca de Gudea que,
por las derivaciones de su interpretacin, fueron por
convencin denominadas y (NMERO DE ORO)
No se atribuye esos sistemas de medida a Gudea pero fueron
usados en su poca, con la posibilidad de que l hubiese
intervenido en algn ajuste a uno de esos sistemas debido a
que una de sus medidas lleva su nombre, la medida llamada
codo de Gudea famosa en la antigedad; por otra parte, se
ha demostrado que ambos sistemas estn relacionados entre
s. En consecuencia, se considera pertinente la incorporacin
de los resultados de ese anlisis.
FIELD OF STUDY
Partial results from the investigation carried out on the
measurements and proportions found in the sculptures The
Architect of the Plan and The Architect with Ruler
motivated the study of linear measurements used in antiquity
in the Middle East, with the hypothesis that the presence of
anthropometric proportions would be found within their
dimensions.
After an initial analysis of a grouping of linear measurement
systems, two series directly related to the period of Gudea
were identified as field of study. Due to the derivations in
their interpretation, these were named and (GOLDEN
NUMBER)
These systems were not attributed to Gudea but were used
in his time, with the possibility that he would have
intervened with some adjustments in one of them indicated
by the fact that one of the measurements has his name, the
once famous Gudea Cubit. Also, it has been demonstrated
that both systems are related, and as a consequence the
incorporation of the results of this analyses is considered to
be relevant.

DESCRIPCIN GENERAL DE LAS SERIES
El valor proporcional matemtico, valor con base o , es
segn el caso slo una representacin, aunque en forma muy
determinante, de las magnitudes concretas que tuvo cada
serie en su forma original, y presenta cifras asociadas al
sistema sexagesimal mucho ms representativas, en cuanto
magnitudes y progresin, que las que se observa en las
columnas que corresponden a los factores escalares de cada
una en trminos absolutos, observados en estudios
arqueolgicos o resultantes del anlisis.
A diferencia del Sistema Mtrico actual con una unidad de
medida que es la central y generadora de la serie a la que
corresponda, en las dos series estudiadas se encontr una
medida central y otra generadora. En ambos casos la medida
central es Qanu, debido a que es la nica expresin comn en
ellos y que debi ser utilizada como patrn de medida en el
uso prctico; esto se confirma porque ese nombre tiene
importancia semntica por su semejanza fontica con la
palabra canon (a travs del griego y de ste al canon because the name has semantic importance due to its
latino) y sera el origen remoto de la que tiene uso actual en
muchas lenguas (con el significado de regla, modelo,
proporcin, medida o modelo), y utilizada en la referencia
a la regla de las proporciones de la figura humana en las
culturas clsicas de occidente.
En cambio, en cada serie por los valores calculados mediante
el empleo de la base o , la medida generadora est
caracterizada por ser la forma ms simple de la aplicacin de
esa base segn el caso, con valor inmediatamente inferior al
Qanu correspondiente; en el primer caso es la medida del
suelo al ombligo del normotipo, o sea su personal; y en el
segundo al codo mayor de su normotipo.

proportions of human figures in the classical cultures of the

of application of that base, according to the case, with a

INTERPRETACIN ANTROPOMTRICA
CORRESPONDENCIA GENERAL
Aparte de que las dos series tuvieron una base antropomtrica,
el anlisis comparativo de ellas permite asumir la relacin que
guardan entre s, que se habra establecido en un proceso de
ajuste mutuo llevado a cabo durante muchsimo tiempo. Con
ese anlisis queda demostrada la correspondencia entre la
Serie y la Serie , con la incorporacin del valor de la
medida Gran U propia de la primera de ellas en la
interpretacin de la segunda.
Por otra parte, es necesario remarcar que la sucesin de los
valores proporcionales matemticos en las dos series,
conservan el patrn sexagesimal, se trate de la interpretacin
con o con , con mayor imagen que la que se expresa en las
correspondientes sucesiones de los factores escalares en cada
serie.
LA MEDIDA LLAMADA CODO
Como medida, codo generalmente se entiende como la
distancia del punto anatmico localizado entre el brazo y el
antebrazo, a la extremidad de la mano. Pero, al encontrarse
tres grupos de magnitudes diferentes a las que se asign esa
denominacin en la antigedad, se puede plantear la hiptesis
de que cada uno de esos grupos corresponde a diferentes
medidas de la anatoma del brazo humano, con los nombres
convencionales que aqu se propone:
Codo Menor. Sera la medida entre el codo anatmico y el
extremo del puo cerrado, que equivale para fines prcticos a
0,20 de la estatura humana; por lo tanto, el promedio con
0,355 m de longitud (codo babilnico comn 0,347 m, codo
ptico griego o de Apolo, 0,371 y codo comn de la Grecia
Asitica 0,347), correspondera a una persona de 1,775 m.
Codo Medio. Sera la medida entre el codo anatmico y la
punta de los dedos, que equivale para fines prcticos a 0,25 de
la estatura humana; por lo tanto, el promedio con 0,441 m de
longitud (codo ltico babilnico de 0, 417 m, codo olmpico
griego de 0,463 m y codo romano de 0,444 m),
correspondera a una persona con una estatura de 1,764 m.
Pero, si se considera la medida del codo ltico babilnico, se
obtiene una estatura de 1,668 m muy cercana a la medida

ANTHROPOMETRIC INTERPRETATION
GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE
Apart from the fact that the two series had an
anthropometric base, comparative analysis of them permits
the assumption of their mutual relationship, which would
have been established in a process of mutual adjustment
carried out during a great deal of time. With this analysis,
correspondence is demonstrated between the Series
and Series , with the incorporation of the value of the
measurement Great U belonging to the first in the
interpretation of the second.
For another part, it is necessary to note that the succession
of proportional mathematical values in the two series
conserve the sexagesimal pattern, concerning the
interpretation of with , with greater image than that
expressed in the corresponding successions of the scale
factors in each series.
THE MEASUREMENT CALLED THE CUBIT
As a measure, the cubit generally is understood as the
distance between the anatomic points located between the
forearm and arm and the end of the hand. However, as
three groups of size different to those assigned in antiquity
can be found, the hypothesis that each of these corresponds
to different measurements of the anatomy of the human
hand can be proposed, with the following conventional
names proposed:
Lesser Cubit. This would be the measurement between
the anatomic elbow and the end of the closed fist, which
for practical purposes corresponds to 0.20 of the human
stature. As such, the average is of 0.355 m of length
(Babylonic Common Cubit 0.347, Pythic Greek or of
Apollo and 0.371, Common Cubit of Asiatic Greece
0.347), which corresponds to a person of 1.775 m.
Middle Cubit. This would be the measurement between
the anatomic elbow and finger tips, which for practical
purposes corresponds to 0.25 of the human stature. As such,
the average is of 0.441m of length (Babylonic Lythic Cubit
0.417m, Olympic Greek 0.463 m and Roman Cubit 0.444
m), which corresponds to a person of 1.764 m. However, if
the measurement of the Babylonic Lythic Cubit is
considered, a stature of 1.668 m is obtained, close to the
measure Qanu in the Series (1.6449 m).

REGLAS GRADUADAS PARA MEDICIN
CAMPO DE ESTUDIO
En cada tablero de las dos esculturas de Gudea estudiadas hay
una regla con dos bordes; uno interior, hacia el respectivo
tablero, y otro exterior. Los bordes interiores representan la
graduacin de un mismo sistema de medida y los exteriores
tienen marcas con diferentes propsitos.
La forma de esos instrumentos es semejante a la que tienen los
de seccin triangular equiltera, empleados actualmente para
el dibujo tcnico, denominados escalmetros. Para mayor
semejanza, el contenido del borde interior de la regla que se
encuentra en El Arquitecto del Plano y los dos bordes de la
otra en El Arquitecto de la Regla tienen medidas a escala.
REGLA EN LA ESCULTURA DEL ARQUITECTO DEL PLANO
Se denominar al borde interior A y al exterior B. Aunque se
rompi un extremo de la regla slo se ha perdido informacin
del borde A. Sin embargo, por la progresin de su graduacin
visible es posible asumir lo que exista en el resto. Las 10
subdivisiones visibles de 1,6458 cm cada una y con criterio
sexagesimal en el diseo de su progresin, muestran una serie
de expresiones de la divisin de la medida Qanu del sistema de
medidas de longitud de esa poca denominado .
La reconstruccin considera que, en forma intercalada, la
mitad de las subdivisiones interiores tiene fracciones
interiores, cada vez con una unidad menos a partir de 6; en
cambio, la otra mitad de subdivisiones tiene espacios interiores
vacos. Como resultado, por el patrn del diseo de la regla, se
puede suponer la existencia de dos subdivisiones adicionales,
para completar 12 iguales, con una extensin total de 19,75
cm.
Es decir, a partir del extremo sealado por la punta del
instrumento de dibujo, cada una de las subdivisiones con
fracciones cada vez menores tiene a continuacin un espacio
vaco. De acuerdo con ese patrn, a continuacin de la
subdivisin destinada a 2 se encontrara: un espacio vaco, la

GRADUATED RULERS FOR MEASUREMENT
FIELD OF STUDY
On each plaque of the two Gudea sculptures there is a ruler
with two borders; one interior, towards the plaque itself,
and one exterior. The two borders represent the graduation
of a single system of measurement and the exteriors have
marks with different purposes .
The form of these instruments is similar to that of the
equilateral triangle section, now used for technical
drawings, called scalimetres. In addition to this similarity,
the content of the interior border of the ruler found in The
Architect of the Plan and the two borders of the other in
The Architect of the Ruler has measurements to scale.
RULER IN THE SCULPTURE THE ARCHITECT OF THE PLAN
The interior border is named A and the exterior B. Although
the end of the ruler is broken only information regarding A
has been lost. However, due to the visible progression of
graduation it is possible to assume that which existed in the
remaining. The 10 subdivisions of 1.6458 cm each and the
sexagesimal criteria of design in the progression show a
series of expressions of the division of the measure Qanu of
the system of measurements of longitude of this period

longitud total de 26, 4 cm. El borde C tiene 16 divisiones
iguales, que representan un igual nmero de veces tambin a
la medida Qanu de la Serie , en escala 1:100. Una de las
divisiones est dividida en 6 partes iguales y, una de stas en 2
y otra en 4.
CONJETURAS. En el borde D, existen marcas que sealan
magnitudes proporcionales de 11,5 y 4,5. Si la primera de esas
magnitudes se iguala a , la segunda seria el inverso de la
mitad de un de 3,15. Otra interpretacin, que no perjudica
a la primera, es que la longitud 4,5 representa a la medida
Qanu de la Serie , en escala 1:36
COMPARACIN DE LAS REGLAS
En primer lugar, el tamao total de la regla de El Arquitecto
del Plano no puede ser igual a la que se encuentra en la
escultura llamada El Arquitecto con Regla, pues sta tiene
26,4 cm y 16 fracciones principales; y, en ambos casos la
dimensin que se lograra, en trminos absolutos o relativos
segn el nmero de fracciones visibles, sobrepasara la
extensin disponible en el tablero de El Arquitecto del Plano,
en el lado correspondiente a la porcin faltante.
