J C Mahindra, Founder, 1892 1951
Jagdish Chandra Mahindra, better known by his moniker JC, was born in 1892 in Ludhiana,
Punjab. The loss of his father at an early age thrust the responsibility of his familys welfare
on his young shoulders, the eldest of nine.
K C Mahindra, Founder, 1894 1963
Kailash Chandra Mahindra, known to all as KC, was born in 1894 in Ludhiana, Punjab, the
second of nine children.

Formation of the Company:

When their father died at an early age, his older brother JC became head of the family.

As Indias inevitable independence loomed large, JC was ambious about the opportunities
that Indian entrepreneurs would have to contribute to the growth of a new nation. It led him to
found Mahindra & Mohammad, in partnership with his brother K C Mahindra and Ghulam
Mohammed, in 2nd October, 1945.

Later when Pakistan and India separated, Mohammed took his shares and shifted to
Pakistan. This led to the foundation of Mahindra & Mahindra, in 1948.
In the year 1950 the company commenced the first
business with Mitsubishi Corporation of 5000 tons of
wagon building plates.

In the year 1953 Otis Elevator Company (India) was

established.The company's Machine Tools Division was
commenced its operations in the year 1958.

In the year 1960 Mahindra Sintered Products Limited was established based on a j
venture with Bir Field.

In the year 1962 Mahindra Ugine Steel Company was established as a joint ventur
between the company and Ugine Kuhlmann France.

In the year 1963 International Tractor Company of India was established and
in the year 1965 the company entered into light commercial vehicles segment.

In the year 1982 Mahindra brand of tractors were launched and also became the m
leader in the Indian tractor market.
In the year 1996 Mahindra Ford India Limited was established a joint venture with
Ford Motor Company USA to manufacture passenger cars.

In the year 1999 the company acquired a major stake in Gujarat Tractors and ren
it Mahindra Gujarat Tractors Ltd.

In the year 2000 the company set up

their first satellite tractor plant at Rudrapur.
