UniSim Tutor
Honeywells UniSim Tutor is part of the comprehensive UniSim Competency Suite,

The Challenge: Acquiring, Maintaining and Propagating
Knowledge
In todays challenging business environment, industrial assets
need to be managed to deliver safe and sustained performance
with improved production capacity and efficiency. This requires
process operators to have depth and breadth of knowledge of the
processes that they manage.
Acquiring, maintaining and propagating knowledge is a significant
challenge in todays fast moving environment particularly when
external pressures are leading to early staff retirements, new
more complex processes are coming on stream and there is a
desire to move faster than ever before to retain competitive
advantage.

The Opportunity: Use new tools to engage a new
generation
Adult learning today requires a new approach to be successful.
Attending classes and doing exercises will always be necessary.
However, using new tools that engage the student with
techniques from the gaming industry are becoming more
common teaching aids. Posing the problem of what happens next
or what just happened on a process plant as a challenge in a
question and answer type game will engage the trainee,
accelerate learning and provide an environment to capture the
knowledge of process experts designing the game.
The Solution: UniSim Tutor
Honeywells UniSim Tutor is a game style tool for capturing
knowledge (in the form of the content of the tool), assessing
knowledge and skill (how well the student responds to the
challenges) and propagating knowledge (exposing the tool to a
wide cohort of students).
UniSim Tutor is part of Honeywells comprehensive UniSim
Competency Suite, which includes robust solutions to better train
the industrial workforce for safe, incident free and efficient
startups and operations. In addition to UniSim Tutor, the suite
includes: UniSim Operations (versatile operator training
simulator), UniSim Curriculum (customizable competency
model), UniSim Field View (2D solution for Field Operator
Training) and UniSim 3D Connect (secure simulator integration
and connectivity to a 3D virtual environment).
The principle underlying the use of UniSim Tutor is that an
operator response to a deviation from the normal state in the
plant is based on the Cognitive Chain. It provides learning tools
that focus on the Fault Diagnosis step in the Cognitive Chain. In
particular exercises are designed to teach the cause and effect

relationships that exist on a plant and to focus on the
development of diagnostic skills training.

UniSim Tutor currently supports a what if mode and diagnostic
mode of training. Both modes can be used in a learning or exam
environment. In the learning environment, there is no scoring of
the performance of the student. In exam environment, a
sophisticated assessment algorithm is used to give a score
based on the student interaction with the tool.
In "what if mode, the student is presented with a series of
scenarios relating to plant operations for example a valve fails
closed. The challenge is to correctly predict the outcomes in
terms of response of a set of instruments or other equipment for
example a temperature may rise or fall or stay the same. The
Q&A is presented through a graphical user interface in the form
of a matrix.

In "diagnostic mode, the student is presented with a set of
symptoms that resulted from an incident. At the beginning of the
exercise only a single symptom is specified, the other symptoms
remaining blank. The student challenge is to figure out the root
cause. The student needs to use knowledge of the plant to reach
a solution. This can involve guessing in which case the score will
be low or by correct identification of the cause through deduction.
The student needs to realize that there may be insufficient
information to select a cause and then the process is to ask for
additional symptom information. For each challenge, there is an
optimal deductive root which scores the maximum and other sub-
optimum roots that result in lower attainments scores.

This simple tool provides a powerful opportunity to capture and
propagate knowledge. The tool can be customised to any plant
situation and can capture the experience of decades in a simple
scalable format for rapid deployment as part of Operator
Competency program. The tool can be used to compliment other
modes of training such as UniSim Operations Suite and it can be
integrated within UniSim Curriculum
