Why WarMeks? A History of Ground Combat in the 21" Century
At the beginning of the 2lUcentury, many pundits held that the tank was dead. The last conflicts of the last century, it was said, had
proved this - tanks were simply too large, too slow, too ponderous, and .too vulnerable to enemy weaponry.
The USA, then as now the most technologically advanced power in the world, made plans to replace its main battle tank with 'Future
Combat Systems' -distributed vehicles, each about the size of an armoured personnel carrier and with a similarly light weight of armc
which between them could supposedly fulfil the same role as the tank yet with increased efficiency and'survivability. Quite rightly,
missiles of various kinds were perceived to be the main threat to ground combat vehicles - after all, strike aircraft, attack helicopters,
missile-launching trucks and even well-equipped infantry were capable of defeating almost any tank from beyond the effective range of its
weaponry. Thus the FCS was given a state-of-the-art electronic warfare suite capable of jamming or otherwise dealing with almost any
missile attack. This proved extremely effective against foes with inferior technology. Unfortunately as soon as the FCS faced a more
traditional main battle tank which also mounted state-of-the-art EW, neither side's missiles were effective and the superior tank gun and
armour of the tank soon demonstrated the folly of trying to make a souped-up truck do the job of a tank.
To some extent this process was inevitable. US military expenditure at the time was driven more by, pplitical expediency and the demands
of the military-industrial complex than by any real desire to ensure the provision of the most effective combat technology. Towards the
end of the 21" century, when money is tight, most government expenditure is based on tried and tested investment in projects that are
known to work, or similar enough to established projects that they have a high likelihood of working. For this reason, main battle tanks,
infantry, artillery and air support were still the main focuses of investment until very recently.
WarMeks changed all.that, hut only in a fairly limited role. As they can move over terrain unpassable even to tanks - the sheerest mountam
and the densest forests, for example - they are ideal for behind-enemy-lines missions larger scale versions of traditional Special Forces
missions. They can land at night on a lightly defended coast, make a beeline for the nearest mountains and get into cover before dawn.
They have the advantage of enormous versatility in comparison to traditional tanks, both in terms of the ability to go almost anywhere
(legs rather than tmcks, arms to climb with) and even in more manual tasks such as combat engineering - any standard Mek, even if
lacking special combat engineering modifications, can dig, uproot trees, and even build just using its hands. Some standing armies also
use light WarMeks as heavy skirmishers. In this role they replace inFantry for some frontline tasks, supporting tanks in areas such as fores

What is known is that fighting has been so lengthy and sporadic due to the enclosed conditions of Bangkok itself and
the use of stealth ablatjve coatings and technologies used by both sides. Both sides in the conflict have escalated to
using urban WarMeks and, considering the interference already inherent in a,city environmenti3he stealth-equipped

massive civilian casualties.
Thaland officials are evacuating the city as quicHy,as possible, hoping to save as many lives as they can before thing$

For three years, the sites of these impacts have been a black monument to the destructivepotential of the Armageddon War. As one of the
first truly palpable attacks against the mainland of the United States, the loss of Napa Valley was far more damaging to the psyche of Americ
than it was financially or militarily. The primary crop of Napa Valley, wine grapes, was hardly a loss to the US war effort, but it proved that
even from halfway across the world, their European enemies could hurt them. From a morale point of view, it was a tremendous victory for
the Federation.
Ecologically, it was a far more serious loss than just a blow to American pride. Napa Valley lies over a number of underground aquifers,
waterways that fuel the table water of most of California's plant life. The three Perseus missiles drove a 4,000 rad dose of radiation into the
ground, tainting the soil and table water for the next 30 years. While the crops of the Napa Valley are not critical ones, the ruined craters an
devastated countryside are a harbinger for what the attack's fallout may do to the rest of coastal and inland California in a few decades.
