ACADEMIC WRITING

- refers to the forms of expository and argumentative prose used by

university students, faculty, and researchers to convey a body of
information about a particular subject. Generally, academic writing is
expected to be precise, semi-formal, impersonal, and objective.

EXAMPLES:

1. Academic Essay

In the United States, circumstances often force people to live alone. For
example, many high school and college graduates move away from
their hometowns and continue their educations or take jobs. Most
schools assign roommates, but employers usually expect people to
take care of their own living arrangements. Also, married people might
feel they will always be together, but currently one out of two
marriages ends in divorce. An even sadder statistic concerns the death
of a spouse. Estimates are that in the next twenty years eight out of
ten married women will become widows, usually late in life. These facts
show that most people have to live by themselves at least once in their
lives whether they want to or not.

2. Reaction Report

Since I have never taken an online class I have found the Student
Orientation partof the SLN website to be very informative. Now that I
have finished the orientation Inow, not only know how to navigate the
site but also know how to use the site. Throughthe orientation I learned
how to do various things. For example I know how to ask questions
through the module, by raising my hand in the virtual classroom by
clickingon the Ask a Question button. I have a friend who has taken
various courses onlinethrough Suffolk and I now understand the
terminology she used, such as what a Moduleis.

Since going through the orientation I also understand what the

symbols mean andwhy they are there. I have learned that the Meet
Your Classmates section of the site is theway that we will be able to
view blurbs about our fellow students as if we were in classand
speaking to each other via conventional means. The Student
Orientation has also been a good way for me to learn how to
communicate with my professor. Along with being able to
communicate with my professor I also know how to participate in
classdiscussions. I now understand the way we communicate our
assignments also, which of course is one of the most important
communication vehicles of the orientation in myopinion.

To summarize, going through the student orientation has shown

me invaluableinformation. It has done this by not only telling me how
online class works but mostimportantly how to communicate and
produce my assignments.

3. Research Report

The aim of this report was to investigate UniLab staff attitudes to personal
mobile phone use in staff and team meetings. A staff survey on attitudes
towards the use of mobile phones in the staff / team meetings was
conducted. The results indicate that the majority of staff find mobile phone
use a major issue in staff meetings. The report concludes that personal
mobile phones are disruptive and should be turned off in meetings. It is
recommended that UniLab develops a company policy banning the use of
mobile phones except in exceptional circumstances.

PROFESSIONAL WRITING
- Includes strands in technical writing and writing and publishing. It is a good
major for students who love to write and who enjoy organizing and presenting
information in multiple media. The professional writing major is noted for
cultivating expertise in writing for the digital workplace; in teaching and
researching multimedia writing, visual rhetoric, usability, and emergent
technologies; in print and digital publishing; and for emphasizing
collaboration, community service, and open-source development and
documentation.
