2017 ROUTE:
HARMONY IN DIVERSITY

The Dakar is set to discover its 29th country, Paraguay, where humidity levels can reach 100% in January. Competitors will
set out from Asuncin, located at sea level, for an entire week at high altitude, with sections verging upon 5,000 masl.
Exiting the Bolivian plateau, which may end up being a nocturnal affair at temperatures close to freezing point, will
provide scant relief, for the Argentinian furnace will approach 50C! The mountainous quest features seven dune
specials playing to the advantage of dune specialists, while the mammoth Super Beln stage will keep competitors
going for almost 1,000 kilometres.

DAKAR.COM - @DAKAR
THE FOURTH
DIMENSION

Dakar adventurers are known for their athletic aptitudes and

acrobatic talents. In symbiosis with their machines, they have
learned to tame, on both sides of the Atlantic, the three aca-
demic dimensions known by mathematicians. The thousands
of kilometres completed in the Sahara or the Atacama have
accustomed them to long distances and the endurance abilities
contained in the kit essential to success on the Dakar. Similarly,
navigation fineness proves quite useful when it comes to keeping
an edge and not getting lost in the wide-open spaces. The depth,
or the height, that characterize the 3D, gives form to the holes,
bumps, stones, dunes and Rios that demand driving precision.
But for the past few years, the competitors have also learned
to adapt to the altitude: little by little in climbing the obstacles
of the Andes, then during a longer visit to the Salar de Uyuni...
In respecting the acclimatization protocol, our men and women
will now face the challenge of the fourth dimension. They will
start their ascent soon after leaving Asuncin in Paraguay,
the 29th country hosting the Dakar. The stay on the
Bolivian Altiplano will stretch out over a week
entirely spent at an altitude of more than
3,000 metres above seas level! Even at La
Paz, in the highest altitude capital in the
world, it will be imperative to catch
a breath, to then descend down
the South American Continent
map and head to Buenos Aires
at sea level.

SPORTING
CHANGES

Navigation spotlighted, balanced conditions in the mountains for the cars and a new category
with the UTVs. An overview of the key regulation reforms
GPS: navigating with a compass!
To run with consistency and to know how to respect the road-book are the
two pillars of rally-raid success. To promote navigation qualities and bring
navigation back into the heart of the Dakar, the GPS systems made available
to the drivers and co-drivers have received limited functionalities. Also, the
Masked Way Points (WPM) have in large part been replaced by Controlled
Way Points (WPC), which are only activated once reached by the vehicle. The
competitors will thus be far less helped in their search by the guidance of the
instruments. Tested on the Afriquia Merzouga Rally last May, this new system
restores all the importance to the good old-fashioned compass.

Altitude: balance the chances

The change of the atmospheric pressure linked to the altitude produces a
different impact on the performance of the vehicles. This finding, which is
detailed in the Balance of Performance study conducted for many years by
the FIA (International Automobile Federation), has brought about a change
of the regulations concerning the diameter of the air restrictor feeding the
engine with oxygen. In order for the petrol 4x4 vehicles to be less penalized
by this law of physics, they will be allowed to use 38 mm air restrictors (+1 mm
vs. 2016), which will put them at the same level as their rivals, the same FIA
study has reduced the air restrictor of the Peugeots to 38 mm (-1 mm vs 2016).

UTV category: small engines, big future

Rally raid enthusiasts all share the ambition to embark on the Dakar, but too
often conditions are difficult to meet. The cost of a 4x4 or a buggy can pose
a problem, but light-weight vehicles (-1,050cm3) are an ever-increasing cre-
dible alternative. More affordable for drivers who do not have an entourage of
powerful partners, they have proven on the terrain that their technical progress
meets the muster. In recognition of this reliability, a stand-alone category has
been created for the UTVs and innovations are expected by 2018. There is now
a new title to be won on the Dakar.

2017 ROUTE:
A TASTE OF THE EXTREME

Marc Coma, Dakar Sporting Director

The route of the 2017 Dakar preserves rally-raid traditions, with a physical challenge
that will push the competitors into the world of extreme endurance: 7 selective
sections will be over 400 kilometres with one of more than 500 kilometres.
The rally will be spent 6 days at more than 3,000 metres above sea level.
The balance of difficulties can be illustrated by a double upward trend:
the level of difficulty will increase just until the rest day, then a second increase
in power will be necessary, to reach ones ideal level for the Super Beln.
Nothing will be decided until the very last special stage at Ro Cuarto.

Monday 2nd January Stage 1 Asuncin Resistencia

Start your engines
It wont be the distance that will preoccupy the competitors, but rather the
tension that will accompany the opening days of competition. Everyone will
have to be aware that an error on the technical tracks and even the trial-style
sections early on could be costly. The tactic for the following days starting
positions will also have its importance for the top contenders.

The regulars believe they know Argentina, but they have yet to encounter
the Chaco! In this region chalk-full of history for connoisseurs of world rally
competition (Transchaco, etc.), patience and a cool head will be invaluable
assets, especially when it comes to the dust. Unless, of course, it turns to mud!

The rise in temperature and altitude will accompany a drastic change of scenery.
With the first off-road sections, the riders and crews will head straight to the
business at hand. The first real test in terms of endurance will also call for
vigilance and lucidity when crossing the Rios. On the other hand, the trucks
will be spared this final difficulty.

High altitude dunes
At around 3,500 metres, the Dakar will reach a cruising altitude of which
competitors will have to navigate for six days. There are few that have already
seen dunes at this altitude that will require an expert climbing technique.
The co-drivers will have no time to relax, with a number of direction changes
in the Bolivian section of the special stage.

Altiplano, maximum effort!
The Dakar will take up residence on the Bolivian Altiplano. While the organisms
will become acclimated, fatigue will set in. In this context, the large variety of

the density of the day will be characterized by the two dune sectors that will

where the battle for the general classification will be played out in new canyons

The Dakar is atypical: by its assumed extreme character, it is a unique adven-
ture in the wilderness, a real-time exploration that demands atypical sporting,
physical and mental aptitudes.

The Dakar is daring: it reinvents and adapts to different contexts and offers
a new adventure every year.

The Dakar is intense: it takes place in extreme conditions on difficult terrains,

SAFETY:
THE OBSESSION

The safety of the competitors, public and credentialed persons is priority one of the organizers.
Like with all major extreme sporting adventures, the Dakar comes with risks. The organizers do
everything possible to limit the risks as much as possible.
Every year all the processes related to safety are reviewed in order to be optimized.
Spectator zones and prevention
22,000 personnel (gendarmes, police, military) for the security of the public
and the rally.
The Dakar enjoys a phenomenal success in South America (4.4 million spec-

the passing of the rally on the official internet site and via local media.
-In Argentina, where the public turnout is the heaviest, 30 officers from
the Highway Security (Seguridad Vial) aboard 15 dedicated vehicles will
supervise the behavior of the public.

Road safety
All
accredited drivers (competitors or not) on the Dakar must sign a charter,
a commitment to proper behaviour before the start of the event.
Respect
of current driving regulation in the different countries is an absolute
necessity.
Data
recorded by the GPS is analysed for possible sanctions.
Speed
controls are also conducted by law enforcement.
