Chapter 1
In current evangelical born again churches, Sunday School has been a valuable

instrument or enduring meeting for Bible leadership and discipleship for 236 years

(Robert Raikes Gloucester, England)(Larson 2008). No matter how useful an

organizational tool, Sunday School has been in decline in both participation (quantity)

and the quality of instruction by various leaders (Barna 2004)

In this marketing research the author will investigate the following research questions.
Is Sunday Schools in decline at Potters Lighthouse Bible Church in Davao City?
What are the reasons people attend Potters Lighthouse Bible Church Sunday Schools

in Davao City?
Are Sunday Schools valuable, the leadership positive, and the curriculum relevant at

Potters Lighthouse Bible Church in Davao City?

Over the last seventy years, (Kelly, 5) 40% of Americans regularly attended

Church and even less Americans have been attending Sunday School. According to

George Barna and Pew studies current church attendance for born again evangelicals for

the last 2 years is about 20% of the total U.S. population. Young adults, particularly

young white, middle-class adults, are marrying later, if at all, and having children at later

ages as well, so there are proportionally fewer children in the population than there once

were (just since 2000, the percentage of people under age 20 dropped from 28.6 to 26.6%

of the population.) In the US, currently only 53% of children ages 0 to 17 are white. This

loss of credible church participation does not even factor the growing development of

both legal and illegal immigration coming from Latin America and Asia.
As an evangelical Christian, It is the goal of all evangelical Christians to promote

the Kingdom of God and in the great commission found in (New American Standard

Bible) (N.A.S.B.) Matthew 28:18-20. It was the Lord Jesus Christ himself who spoke at

the end of his public ministry about the purpose for evangelical Christians in (N.A.S.B.)

Matthew 28:18-20 and Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been

given to me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the

nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy

Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with

you always, even to the end of the age.

From the initial establishment by Robert Raikes, Sunday School was a means of

preventing youth from getting into criminal behavior and teaching them how to read and

write from the literature of the Bible (Aukerman, June 2008). This basic literacy tool set

was out of a need when most families in Europe and America were homeschooled

children were inhibited in learning due to the fact that factory work of the industrial

revolution kept them busy Monday thru Saturday (Boylan 1998). However, after the

growth of the state run school systems and child saver laws, Sunday Schools mission of

basic reading and writing of the Bible shifted to that of a discipleship tool of various

churches. It is in this spirit or attitude or tone in which the author or research seeks to re-

evaluate and potentially remarket the modern Sunday School. My hypothesis will lay out

the following material(s).

Scope and Limitations

This case study marketing I will focus on Sunday Schools at Potters Lighthouse

Bible Church in Davao City and attempt to elicit input from all the Christians to seek out

if there has been a decline in Sunday Schools participation and the associated reasons

behind this potential trend. I will attempt to gain about 150 printed surveys for this

research study. My method of contact will be to provide printed surveys and immediately

collecting the surveys and providing a ballot box for late surveys in this study.

Sunday School Started in 1751 or 1768 in England by Hannah Ball & Robert Raikes
Word of God Bible, The Book of 66 sub-books. The author of this paper has

primarily chosen to use the New American Standard Version/Bible due to the highest

fidelity to the original transmission work from the Hebrew and Greek sources.

Significance of the Study

Currently in the United States of America evangelical Adult Sunday Schools are

in a state of decline and it is the authors first step to gain an understanding of the quality

and quantity of participants in Sunday School. The next area of interest will be to assess

the level of preparation and training for evangelical Sunday School leaders in Davao City.

It is the authors view and opinion that this marketing study from a macro-view will help

lead to better insights to bolster, modernize, remarket, and develop Sunday Schools and

their respective leaders.

Conceptual Framework
With the modern format of group dynamics of adult Sunday School, my

foundational ideology is that Sunday School is worth keeping but needs to undergo a

sharp transformation. My future and conceptual framework will be as follows. Sunday

School promotes the following lifestyle choices.

We grow in our faith by hearing the Word of God. So faith comes from

Our faith is strengthen by fellowship with Christians of like faith.

When a movement of evangelical Christians rejects a Sunday School there can be

serious problems with a Sunday School or a potential group of problems in a Sunday

School. Some of these problems can be the following issues:

Participants lack of a credible acceptance by faith of the Gospel of Grace.
Participants have no current credible friendships or no meaningful friendships.

Participants maybe disorganized at home, burned out from work, or engaged in

other personal struggles.

Christians have low priority/completing priority w/ leisure activities, work, and or

investments issues.
Other Sunday School members can be rude, selfish, hypocritical, ignorant, etc.
A Sunday School instructor may have poor leadership skills, be poorly trained, have

a poor rapport with his discussion group/learners.

Leaders and or participants may have a poor understand of the Bible or ignorance

in Biblical concepts.
Poor use or lack of graphical aids, poor quality location(s), lack of other resources.
People are coming to look for help but not find credible help or assistance
People are looking for friendships but there can be a social class division or friction
It is the evangelical Christians responsibility to therefore seek out or encourage

other Christian to seek out a possible initial solution for Christian Discipleship.
Christian Discipleship (some classical examples but not exhaustive method of

discipleship)
Start to attend a Bible believing church that believes that Gods word.
Attend and participate in a credible Sunday School program.
Begin a reading program in the Bible two chapters a day reading both the New & Old

Testament.
Begin to read about the history of Israel and Rome during the time of Christ.
Learn to share your faith with friends and win others to Christ.
Begin to download Christian music that spiritually inspires you and honors God.
Allot time to spend with other born again evangelical Christians at fellowship/meals.
Apply for believers baptism and then look into participating in communion and

potentially pursue church membership at some point in the near future.

Chapter 2
Review of the Related Literature
For the location of our study our industry is a collection of evangelical churches

in the greater Davao city or region IX. The 2015 population of the region is higher by

424,755 compared with the population of 4.47 million in 2010, and by 1,217,155

compared with the population of 3.68 million in 2000. Refer to Table 1.

The population of Region XI increased by 1.74 percent annually, on average,

during the period 2010 to 2015. By comparison, the rate at which the regions population

grew during the period 2000 to 2010 was higher at 1.97 percent. See Table 2.

In the article Has the Sun Set on Sunday School? (Pandika 2015). Pandika

commented that apparently a lot of people are busy, at least in rich countries. As

marginalized as Sunday school has become in the United States, only about 5 percent of

British kids went to Sunday school in 2010. A mere 11 percent of elementary school

students in New Zealand were enrolled in Sunday school in 1985, down from 50 percent

in 1950. Sunday school enrollment and membership in mainstream Protestant churches

plummeted from 65 percent of Canadians in 1931 to 27 percent in 2001.

Other previous studies that have studied like 7 Startling Facts: An Up Close Look

at Church Attendance in America, The Sunday School as a Viable Tool for Church

Growth in the 21st Century, and An Examination of the Dynamism between Church

Growth and a Vibrant Sunday School Programme: A Case Study of Nine Protestant

Churches in Manzini, Swaziland have similarly addressed some of the various topics that

study these churches and Sunday Schools. Part of the three previous studies have

attempted to improve outreach, administration, and to be more engaged with their local

communities but not address how their Sunday School leaders are developed or value and

partly looked at the social cohesion. Additionally, this study will hopefully detect a

certain amount of social cohesion between the members of various evangelical Sunday

Schools and identify trends in facilities and resource needs in different Sunday Schools.
Chapter 3
Methodology
The author or researcher will attempt to study the already stated objectives and

get a better sense and understanding on the specific spiritual strengths and weaknesses for

Sunday Schools in Davao in using the following methods. I will print out my three paged

predesigned survey where I will plan to copy/print about 800 sets of surveys or (2,400

pieces of related paper) due to the fact many survey forms will be lost, thrown out,

misplaced, ignored, and the like. This will allow for more respondents verses not

enough respondents to answer my surveys with the allotted time line and the ability to

drop off and pick up my materials. I will contact as many churches, ministries, schools,

and universities as possible by phone first and coordinate a time to bring my paper

surveys with written directions. I will then drive to as many of these locations as possible

and drop off my surveys on a weekday with a drop off box to container to collect all

forms. I anticipate to allow for two weeks for various respondents to complete my forms

and I will collect all of the materials and most likely abandon the remaining surveys. I

will provide a cover letter for better communication and intent in my activities. I will

also provide copies of all of my work to those missionaries, pastors, leaders, or other

evangelical Christians interested in my marketing research work on Sunday School in a

PDF format via personal email.

This marketing improvement study on Sunday School will be assessing both

qualitative measures and quantitative measures. Since I have prepared an answer keys

already in my initial design analysis I will be the one grading the materials. These

surveys are gauging a limited amount of attendance, social cohesion, and an assessment

of how and why some of the leadership problems might be improved.

Due to the unknown amount potential respondents and varieties of peoples I will

then need to use the Cochran mathematical formula, which displayed below.
