How can I use my experience for betterment of my city

Oct 20th, 2016

As I have turned 64 last month, I have the opportunity to assess and look back what I have
attained in my life as a person and as a worthy citizen. As a person, I always had a strong
liking for cleanliness and hygiene and I used to spent good amount of time over it, cleaning
myself and training others how to go about it. I relished talking about health issues and how to
live a fuller and trouble free life.

As Im 64, I still have full grown hair (though some strands turned grey), good eye sight, strong
teeth (I can still crack a nut) and robust health. Unlike others I truly enjoy the gifts of nature,
seasons and day to day living. It gives me an upper edge over others, to tell them, to teach
them, to train them and share my experiences with them how can one stay healthy throughout
his/ her life and lead a stress free life. Since Im retired, I have got plenty of time for others and
since I feel this is going to be a noble cause, I would really like to zest my efforts into it,
towards others welfare.

Everybody has the right to be healthy, trouble free and stress free, everybody wants it too, but
how to get it, only some have mastered that art. Often we get involved in misleading, tempting,
petty things, which do not have a long term existence and effect but we waste a lot of our
valuable time, energy and effort discovering, engaging and talking ourselves about it. That time
and most of the time, our mind set is like that once we get over it, we will mend our ways and
find the ways to improve upon it. Let it be like that for time being, but what happens, that time
for improvement never comes and years just pass by as it is. And when we feel at loss, that
time we realize how much of valuable and precious time we have wasted.

I would like to train and teach young ones and even old ones also, how to discipline yourself
about life. Keeping our city clean is every citizen's duty. First we should love our country. We
sing songs praising bharath matha and so on but we never think twice to throw dirt anywhere
that suits us. Strict law should be enforced like the one in Singapore. This way fine also can
be collected which in turn can be used for development purpose in a democratic country like
ours. People take for granted everything and if one tries to educate about this one may not
take it in the right spirit. In fact they feel we are too interfering. Hence better to enforce fine.
Its our duty to keep our city clean because it represents that which types of people live in that
city It is no one elses job to talk about your life, its primarily your own responsibility to lead
your life and where you would like to take it. The list of tasks is so long, but I would like to jot
down some:

1- You are responsible for your own happiness, cleanliness and well being.
2- It doesnt cost a penny to be happy.
3- Happiness is not a state of mind but a way of living.
4- Cleanliness is next to Godliness.
5- We should not only be physically clean but clean at mental level too.
6- Dont hold things to yourself only, learn the joy of sharing and giving.
7- Dont brood over gone past, you can build a positive future for yourself.
8- As per our inscriptions, Goddess Laxmi dwells only at those places which are clean,
pious and peaceful.
9- If we wish to keep ourselves healthy, start from today itself.
10-You can clean your house and throw the garbage next to your neighbors house, but
what about vice-versa.
11- Controlled daily routine, self discipline and happiness are the key factors towards
success.
12-For cities we can start from our locations, start from our own home and create task force
to introduce, monitor and train people about cleanliness, waste management, health
and hygiene.
13-Companies can distribute free samples of toothpaste and soaps and distribute old but
clean clothes as their social responsibility.
14- While traveling don't throw any wrapper, paper or any dry waste on road. Keep it in
your bag or pocket (as it is a dry waste you can keep them in your bag/pocket).
15-Keep paper bags with yourself to store wet waste and throw them in dustbin only.
16-Avoid spitting on roads (as it can be the reason of viral disease).
17-Avoid chewing Pan-Masala, Gutka and Tobacco.
18-Avoid use of plastic bags.
19-Follow government's rules and regulations.
20-If someone is breaking the rule then make them aware of it.
21-Stop your friends if they are making such mistakes.
22-Spread awareness to keep our city clean.

Everyday we each witness some form of littering or defacing of public and private property. Yet
we turn a blind eye to it and adopt a "don't care, it's not my problem attitude." We forget that
there are simple things that we can do to ensure the natural beauty of our cities are
preserved. If you ate a banana or a packet of chips in your own home you wouldn't discard the
peel or packet in the middle of your living room would you? The same concept applies. Throw
it in the trash cans provided. Educate people around you regarding unclean habits. Start with
your kids and work your way up to your elders. Teach them the importance of safely disposing
of certain items and how it will decrease the risk of sickness in your community. Pick up trash,
If you see it, pick it up, it will not kill you! Make extra cash from your trash!

These are just a few tips on how to keep your area clean. Be proactive!! Its awful to live in filth
and then complain about the municipality when you are creating the filth on your own! Be a
decent human!

In this way I hope what I learnt throughout my life will help people understand the worth of
cleanliness, health and hygiene. I do what I feel like and this is my prime responsibility to work
building towards cleaner and greener city where I dwell in.
