ProgramOverview

TheMasterofDataScience(M.D.S.)isa10month,nonthesisprofessionaldegreeprogramconsistingof30credits.The
programfocusesonutilizingdescriptiveandprescriptivetechniquestoextractandanalyzedatafrombothunstructured
andstructuredformsandtocommunicatethefindingsofthoseanalysestoguideprescriptivechangeinorganizations.
Thisprogramwilleducatestudentsintheanalysisofdataformanydifferentdisciplines,suchashealthcare,commerce,
andutilities,andwillhelpaddressthedemandforskilleddatascienceprofessionalsintheseareas.

ThisprogramisnotintendedforstudentswithanundergraduatedegreeinComputerScienceorStatisticshowever,these
studentsmaybeconsidereduponreviewbythegraduateprogram.

AdmissionRequirements

Applicantsmustmeetthegeneraladmissionrequirementsformaster'sdegreessetbytheFacultyofGraduateand
PostdoctoralStudies.

Applicantsmustalsoprovideproofofsuccessfulcompletionof:

1.onecourseinprogramming(e.g.,UBCCPSC110orAPSC160orequivalent)
2.onecourseinprobabilityand/orstatistics(e.g.,UBCSTAT200orSTAT241/251orSTAT302orequivalent)
and,
3.onecourseincalculus(e.g.,UBCMATH100orequivalent)oronecourseinlinearalgebra(e.g.,UBCMATH
221orequivalent).Completionofacourseineachofcalculusandlinearalgebraisrecommended.

Applicantsmustprovide:

Astatementofinterestdescribingtheiracademicbackground,futurecareergoalsandtheirinterestindata
science.
Arsum,includinglinkstoanyrelevantsoftwareordatascienceprojects.
Threereferenceletters.

Uponadmission,applicantswillberequiredtoprovidea$1,000(CAD)nonrefundabledepositthatwillbeappliedtotheir
firsttuitioninstalment.

setbytheFacultyofGraduateandPostdoctoralStudieswithtwoexceptions:

1.NotransfercreditwillbeacceptedfortheM.D.S.program
2.AllissuesrelatingtoacademicstandingandprogressthatarenotresolvedbytheProgramDirectorwillbe
referredtotheDeanofScience.
