GENDER INEQUALITY AMONG NATIVE PEOPLE

The pearl, by John Steinbeck, shows traditional native peoples with very

tradition roles and expectation for each gender. The setting was located in the native

side of Mexico, which it significantly shows how social class confine their living. The

social class not only limits their freedom, but it also shows the discrimination against

women. For instance, the protagonist, Kino, describes the perfect wife as being

obedient: By modern standard, this is the gender inequality, and gender inequality still

exists among native people.

The gender inequality is wide spread throughout the world. Only 4 out of over

135 countries have fixed this problem and accept in the gender equality including

Costa Rita, Cub, Sweden, and Norway1. However, Gender inequality is still exists in

the modern society, but no one seems to care about it. This problem happens because

of the sexual role that we all stick with the old tradition. The social shapes all of us to

follow the social circumstance or others idea.

Women and men are not created equal. They each have their God given strengths,

focused on their responsibilities for procreation and family viability. Those

differences are not easily dismissed however those differences do not condone

gender discrimination in society, and certainly not in the workplace. (Malkin, 2005)

Gender discrimination means discrimination based on a person's gender or sex, which

more often affects girls and women. Because of gender discrimination, girls and

women do not have the same opportunities as boys and men for education,

meaningful careers, political influence, and economic advancement.

The basic difference between man and women is that they require each other

to be able to procreate and keep the human species alive.

Other than that, the world has always never allowed the 2 to be equal and the

male species has always and still discriminates the female as being a second-class

person and not their equal. This is more prevalent in certain religions globally.

Sexism or gender discrimination refers to the act of treating a person differently

because of his or her gender. Simply stated, it is a strengthening of behavior and

attitude based on roles each sex is believed to have had in our society since long.

Most cultures are patriarchal, which means, gender bias is against women.

The right of women was restricted from the moment when they are born. They

have to obey the custom of society in their country even they feel insecurity about it..

This can lead to many consequences, especially the violence or brutality against

women. For example, in many areas, there are no laws about the domestic violence. It

considered to be a matter inside the family that over the judicial duty. This means that

the husband has full right to do whatever to the wifes body. However, this problem is

happening to the native people much often and more challenge compared to the

normal women.2

When they were born, as indigenous peoples, their rights as a citizen were

oppressed under the moral line. The law that the state made about the native people

was to define their life by rule what activities is illegal or legal. They set the

punishment to be imprisonment, torture, or execute.3 Therefore, being women among

this situation is double what the normal people or other native people have to face. As

women, they suffer from both inside and outside surrounding, and this lead to the

weakness of their status. Moreover, The parity of the indigenous women involve in

the violation of their right that struggle the way they can perform their full ability to

entire world. For instance, in some society, they call the indigenous women third

class, and in this status, they cant afford any work or the education as the normal

citizen.

Indigenous women cant make their decision because they are controlled and

threaten by their society and it become to be a traditional. This issue is often happen

in Africa because most of the population is lack of education, and culture is not

preventing the violent or some of threaten women. They treat women as a second

class of society and it happen especially with domestic people4. Another example of

women's inequality is in USA. Some of women in USA have a question about

vacancy of women. Some of several industries, women were overrepresented but in

other they are under. In 2010, women were presented 79 present in health and social

service, and 68.9 percent are in education. However, women were only presented 8.9

percent in professional and technical service, and 8.9 percent in construction center. It

inequality happen in USA.

To sum up, gender inequality is the huge problem among our world. Many

countries still find the solution to solve and decrease this problem. But in some

developing countries, they still believe in their traditional about gender and ignore to
