INSTRUCTOR EFFECTIVENESS FORM (IEF) CRONBACH RELIABILITIES

The original Instructor Effectiveness Form was created in 1988, and modified slightly by
rearranging items on scales in about 1995 and 2010. The scale has always had 25 items reflecting
four dimensions: Course Design, Ability to Motivate Students, Communication Management,
and Assessment Effectiveness. These dimensions emerged from a review of the literature before
the IEF items were written.

Items were written in a four-step Likert-type format of Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree, and
Strongly Disagree. There was no middle choice. Each item was coded as the percentage of
Agreements (percentage of Strongly Agree, plus percentage of Agree), minus the percentage of
Disagreements (percentage of Strongly Disagree, plus percentage of Disagree). This produced a
baseline measure of Instructor Effectiveness for the particular course in which the IEF was
conducted. That baseline could then be compared with a number of other baseline measures: the
instructors performance v. others of his/her classes that term, the instructors performance v. the
rest of the departments instructors performances that term, the instructors performance v. the
rest of the departments instructors performances in the same course that term, etc.
