MMEL/MCDL Items.

Topic: Fuel Saving

Purpose of this Article:

The purpose of this article is to provide A320 Family Operators with an overview of the fuel penalties
when flying with inoperative items of the Master Minimum Equipment List (MMEL) or Master
Configuration Deviation List (MCDL).
This article should help A320 Family Operators to apprehend the additional fuel cost of MMEL/MCDL
items versus the scheduled maintenance.
However, A320 Family Operators must always consider MMEL and MCDL instructions to dispatch the
aircraft within the correct repair intervals and they must remember that associated repairs should be
performed at the earliest opportunity.
These fuel penalties are not to be used for flight planning computation. Only the penalties provided in
the MMEL/MCDL apply for the determination of additional fuel to be loaded.

Both tables below provide approximate values for fuel penalties, for each affected MMEL and MCDL
item on A320 Family aircraft.

Some MMEL and MCDL items do not apply to all aircraft models, and the result of each failure on
the fuel consumption may be slightly different depending on the aircraft type/model/configuration.
Both tables below provide the fuel penalties values applicable to an A320-233 aircraft with
sharklets, at a 61.5 T Landing Weight (LW), and at Long Range Cruise (LRC) speed, based on an
average of two flights (90 min and 180 min).

Please note that the A320-233 aircraft has been arbitrarily chosen and is not representative of the
whole A320 Family aircraft fleet. Therefore, if necessary A320 Family Operators must perform their
own performance computations, in order to determine more accurate values for the fuel penalties
applicable to their specific operations.

Both tables include only MMEL and MCDL items for which a failure induces a significant increase in
the fuel penalty (i.e. more than 5 kg per hour).
