Objective :
(A) Educational
i To make the pupils comprehend the first four paragraphs of the
lesson
ii To practice description, mainly Past Simple Tense and Present Perfect
Tense
iii To familiarizes the pupils with the following phrases, used in the text,
so that the passages become easier and simpler for them
All of a sudden
To give one courage
To make a mistake
iv By teaching the main structures of the lesson teaches will make the
reading lesson more accessible to the pupils.
v To enable them to translate the text into Urdu.

(B) Language Skills:


To give considerably Listening (L) Speaking (S) and Reading (R),
i
practice based on Past simple Tense and Present Perfect Tense
ii To give writing (W) practice through substitution Table
iii To develop the pupils Intensive Reading approach.
To give them pronunciation drill of the following words: Terrified,
iv Devour, Plough.

(C) Linguistic:
(i) Structural: To teach the pupils the following structures:
To be terrified, did not want to have + 3rd form of the
verb

(ii) Lexical: Lexical items like


Appeared, addressed, command, deliver,
devour, terrified, will be added to their vocabulary.
Previous Knowledge

1. Structural: the children can make sentences like:


(i) He went to school.
(ii) He was playing etc.
Lexical Verbs: etc, gave cannot do
Nouns: farmer, file bullocks
Adjective: Clever

Motivation: To motivate the students for reading [5 mim, time] the teacher will do the
following:

[1] Questions:
(a) Have you ever seen a tiger? (by hanging the picture of the tiger on the
wall)
(b) Have you ever seen a farmer ploughing his filed? (By hanging the picture
on the wall).
(It makes no difference whether the pupils give answer in yes or no.
Our aim is only to arouse a desire in the students to read the text).

[ii] Announcement:
To day we will read the story, The Clever Wife: in which we see atiger
talking to a farmer (the announcement. a tiger talking to farmer will
increase their interest in reading the text).

The teacher will narrate the story very briefly showing pictures where

necessary. The students will listen attentively.


At first he will show and imaginary picture of a Clever Wife.
Then showing pictures (ii) One day a farmer was plouging his fields
[showing the pictures (iii)] A tiger appeared from the bushes [showing picture
(iv)]
The farmer was terrified to see the tiger. But he knew that he would not eat
him. He would eat his bullocks.
Instructural Material (Presentation)
[3 mim, time]
(i) (Listening and Reading Skills)
Model Reading by the Teacher (Pupils books closed) The teacher will
read the first four paragraphs. The students will not open their books.
They will listen. However, the teacher, during his reading will go on
words _____ this is to give practice in pronunciation and reading. While
showing a card the teacher will pronounce the word correctly and a bit
slowly

(ii) Model Reading by the Teacher [Books Open):


[4 minutes]
After the first reading o the teacher, the pupils are well acquainted with
the pronunciation of different words: Moreover, they can recognize them
well. In the second reading, when the students have opened their books,
they will follow him and underline anything they do not understand as
the teacher goes along. This time the teacher will read very slowly. As a
class-teacher, he knows the difficulties of his pupils. He knows also that
most of them will underline the following

ALL OF A SUDDEN, TO GIVE ONE COURAGE, TERRIFIED, DEVOUR

(iii) Study of the Passage [L/S/R/W]


The teacher now will explain with illustration the difficulties of the
students they have noted. He will apply direct Method and the
Substitution Method, and mother tongue very sparingly. The students
will be involved in learning new structures and new vocabulary.

Questions And Answers

Question: What is the farmer doing? (showing picture No.II)


The students can answer this question as they have already heard the answer.
Answer: The farmer is ploughing his fields.
Question: What do you see in this picture? (showing picture No. iii)
Answer: The tiger is appearing from the bushes.

All of a sudden: (The teacher will write on the black-board)

Contextual Use: (i) All of a sudden , it began to rain (B.B.W)


(ii) All of a sudden, the teacher came into the class room
(B.B.W)

Situational Use: The teacher will send Mr. Mujahid, a pupil, out of the
class-room. He will be asked to come in after some time,
we are waiting for Mr. Mujahid. He has not come yet.
On his back to the class-room he will say: we were
waiting for him and all of a sudden he has entered the
room.

Some of the students will be asked to use All of a sudden in their own
words.

To be terrified:(B.B.W) this structure will be taught with the help of


substitution tables.
Model Sentence: The farmer was terrified to see a tiger.

Situational use: The teacher will hid three coins in the desk and

will ask a student:


Who many coins are there?
The students will definitely say one or two
The teacher will bring out the three coins and
will say you have made a mistake; these are
three.
Paired Practice; The class will be divide into pairs and the
following statement will be practiced.
(i) How many coins are these?
(ii) You have made a mistake ---- these are ---


Devour
The use of mother tongue)
The meaning of this word can also be taught
with other devices like creating situations and
using in context. But to give equivalent in
mother tongue is helpful and saving)
To give one courage: the teacher will write on the black-board.
The teacher will write the following sentences on the
Black Board.
1. I did not want to appear in the examination. But my father
gave me courage to sit in the examination.
2. I was afraid of going into the dark but my mother gave
me courage.
Now, the teacher will ask the students to guess the
meanings of to go someone courage.
Reinforcement: [Reading, Speaking Skills]
(i) The teacher will fix the following cards prepared before
hand on the flannel-board and the pupils will be asked
to read them:

(ii) The students will be asked to translate the following

(iii) Final reading by the teacher (book open) [2 minutes]

After this post mortem of the passage, the teacher will


make a final reading with correct intonation and stress.
This time the pupils will enjoy the passage as they
know all the meanings of the difficult words and
phrases.

(iv) Reading by the pupils: (Reading Skill] [6 minutes]

At first, the brilliant students will be asked to read the


text. If they make a mistake (though there is no fear) the
teacher will write in on the black board. After his
reading, the teacher will explain it to the students. The
weak students will read at the end:
