New leadership in Washington,D.C., dealt a powerful and destabiliz-ing blow to the backbone of SiliconValley’s public transit system Friday.The Federal Transit Administrationannounced it’s delaying a decision onwhether to award $647 million to helpelectrify Caltrain — funding that needsto come through by March 1 to keepthe project on track. After years of reviewing the projectduring the Obama administration, in abrief letter the FTA said it now needsmore time and deferred a decision atleast until Trump develops his budgetproposal. Failing to receive federal support forthe nearly $2 billion overhaul could“kill” Caltrain’s long-planned mod-ernization. With design work alreadyunderway, Caltrain now faces potentialscheduling delays and increased coststhat could derail a project touted tohave environmental and congestion-relief benefits.The FTA’s announcement comes justthree weeks after Trump’s newSecretary of Transportation Elaine

In San Mateo County’s first-everhuman trafficking convictionhanded down by a jury, a Berkeleyman was found guilty of coercing aminor into prostitution Friday,according to prosecutors. After less than a day of delibera-tions, a jury found 27-year-oldMatthew Graves guilty of humantrafficking, pimping, panderingand dissuasion of a witness, saidSan Mateo County DistrictAttorney Steve Wagstaffe. Graves’ conviction stems fromDecember 2015 when a 16-year-old victim arrived at the Mills-Peninsula Medical Center inBurlingame with bruising to hereyes, arms and shoulder. Whenpolice were called to the hospital,she said Graves was her boyfriendand pimp, according to prosecu-tors. Wagstaffe said he was pleasedwith the jury’s determination,which acknowledged that humantrafficking does in fact take placein San Mateo County. “We’re fighting the scourge of modern-day slavery. She loved her 49ers, Giantsand Warriors, and went with a neighborhoodgroup to a couple of 49er Super Bowl games.Rosary and Mass 10 a.m. Feb. 22 at St.Bartholomew’s, burial to follow at SkylawnMemorial Park.Funeral Services under the direction of Sneider & Sullivan & O’Connell’s.

She is further survived by herAuntie Mia di Carlo, Aunt Junell Gill andUncle George Lucas, as well as manycousins and dear friends from faith andrecovery communities.
