Overview of Usul al-fiqh terms and

definitions
Purpose of this text

At the time of writing this text I have not found many freely available texts which provide the English
reader a clear and detailed alphabetical listing of Usul al-Fiqh terms and definitions.

This text seeks to provide the reader with a simple way for looking up terms, definitions and examples
which are related to the subject of Usul al-fiqh, and related subjects.
We will look at the way an Usul al-fiqh term was defined from the classical works of the mujtahid Imams
such as Imam Abu Hanifah and Imam Shafii, then the scholars of the mathahib such as Imam Nawawi up
to the contemporary scholars of today such as Dr Hashim Kamali.

The terms are listed in alphabetical format using a Standard English transliteration defined at the end of
the text. Some terms and definitions will include the Arabic transcript of the word as well.

The text can be used by people working on Usul al-Fiqh related articles, websites, books, etc as a guide
to standard English translations for Usul al-Fiqh related terms and definitions.

This text is currently work in progress and we will update this as we go along. It can serve as a template
for terms and definitions from various Islamic related subjects.
