About ALPHA 2016

The Conference on Advancing the Life Sciences and Public Health Awareness (ALPHA 2016)

Welcome to the International Conference on Advancing the Life Sciences and Public Health
Awareness. All sessions will be held at the Nagoya Sakae Tokyu REI Hotel on Sunday, July 10 and
Monday July 11, 2016. The hotel can be easily accessed by public transportation and it is located in the
heart of the shopping and entertainment district of downtown Nagoya.

As the fourth largest city in Japan, Nagoya is a center for industry and manufacturing as well as
scientific and medical research, with several national universities in the region and its booming
economy, it is an ideal location for an event focusing on the life sciences and public health.

With the theme Impact and Progress, ALPHA 2016 aims to raise awareness of the correlation
between the life sciences and public health issues. In addition, the conference will focus as other
disciplines such as the IT field which is yielding groundbreaking discoveries from novel genes and bio-
products to cutting-edge nanotechnology, resulting in a transformed science landscape with profound
global applications in understanding life, eradicating diseases, securing a more equitable food and
water supply/distribution as well as creating novel bio-industries and products.

Proceedings
The proceedings for this symposium have been approved and assigned an International Standard Serial
Number (ISSN) through the Japanese National Centre for ISSN under the auspices of the National Diet
Library.

The National Diet Library, which acquires national serial publications exhaustively as the only national
and deposit library in Japan, plays a role as the Japanese National Centre for ISSN.

The Proceedings will be sent to all registered participants and made available through the INTESDA
homepage shortly after the symposium. Please note that the proceedings are published in electronic
format only as we strive to be a carbon neutral event. This event has been registered as ISSN 2189-
2261.

Reading and Editorial Committee


We deeply appreciate the tireless effort and commitment to confidentiality and professionalism of our
reading and editorial committee members. Under the guidance of Dr. Evitayani (Faculty of Animal
Husbandry, Andalas University, Indonesia) and Dr. Natthawut Kaewpitoon (Faculty of Public Health,
Vongchavalitkul University, Thailand) and our team of readers, we reviewed more than 75 abstracts.
The final distribution was as follows:

ALPHA: 76 submissions received with 56 accepted (73.68% acceptance rate)

We employed a double-blind review system with instructions and a scoring rubric that assessed areas
such as originality, clarity/organization, spelling/grammar and suitability for the event.

We wish to thank the everyone involved for their willingness and effort to assist with the reading and
editorial committee work.

Designated Hotel
Nagoya Tokyu REI is located in the city centers Sakae district, east of Nagoya station, a bustling area
with many offices, hot shopping spots, and dining opportunities. At just a seven-minute walk from
Sakae and Fushimi subway stations, the hotel has 297 rooms. Amenities include Satellite TV (regular
channels and VOD) , refrigerator, hair dryer, pants press, bidet, LAN cable, coffee/tea set, slippers,
body wash, facial & hand soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush set, razor, shower cap, hair brush,

Venue
Nagoyas rich history is intertwined with significant historic events and upheavals that created the first
shogunate. It is the birthplace of three of Japans most famous historical figures: Oda Nobunaga,
Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu. Today, Nagoya is a modern city with popular tourist
destinations that include Nagoya Castle, Tokugawa Museum, Atsuta Shrine, Noritake Garden, etc.

Dress

During sessions and receptions, the expected dress code is business casual.

Weather

Nagoya has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and cool winters. The summer is noticeably
wetter than the winter, although rain falls throughout the year.

Equipment
Presentation rooms are equipped with PC notebook computers, screens, projectors, speakers, laser
pointers and microphones.

Please note that the computers are not connected to the sound system in the room. If you intend to have
an audio track during your presentation, please let us know.

We also provide onsite technical support, if needed.

Time Moderators
Presentations during regular sessions have been allotted a fixed amount of time. We advise that
presenters limit their presentation and all time for questions and answers. We also ask that you allow
time for the next presenter to prepare.

The primary task of the moderator is simply to remind presenters when the presentation time has
expired so as to allow for a smooth transition for the next presenter.

The moderators are not required to introduce the speakers because details are included in the schedule
program regarding the name and affiliation of the speaker.

If a presenter is absent or arrives late, the moderators should start the next presentation and inform the
audience accordingly. If a moderator arrives late or is absent the panel should nominate an alternate
moderator.

Any presenters arriving late must wait until the final presenter has finished, and then may use any
remaining time to present.

Internet Access

WIFI access is available throughout the hotel. Please see the front desk for login and password details.

Printing

Photocopies can be made at the Kinkos printing shop a short walk from the hotel. Ask the front desk
for directions.

Banks / ATM / Currency Exchange

There is a bank that offers currency exchange centers within walking distance from the hotel. Please
ask the hotel front desk for a map and directions.

Natthawut Kaewpitoon is a lecturer at Vongchavalitkul University, Thailand. He is also a research


supervisor for Suranaree University of Technology Hospital, Thailand and a researcher at the
Parasitic Disease Research Unit, Institute of Medicine, Suranaree University of Technology, Thailand.
His research is focusing on the Opisthorchis viverrini, cholangiocarcinoma, malaria, and Helicobacter
pylori particularly epidemiology, health intervention, geographic information system, molecular
biology, and immunology.

Powerful and Statistically Meaningful Findings for Small Populations
James McNally, University of Michigan, United States of America1

Dr. McNally is Director of the NACDA Program on Aging, a data archive containing over 1,500
studies related to health and the aging lifecourse. His research focuses primarily on issues of family
support and health among the aged, both in the U.S. and internationally. He does methodological
research on the repair of deficient data. Most recently, he has been studying the impacts of
heterogeneity on health outcomes among elderly U.S. Asian/Pacific Islander populations.

Evitayani has been teaching at Andalas University since 2003 where she specializes in Animal
Nutrition with tropical forages and mineral supplementation in Sumatra, Indonesia. Much of her field
research has been conducted through the study of a permanent plot in Animal Farm in West Sumatra,
which was established by Andalas University. In addition, she has conducted research collaboration
with several scientists from some of Japans most prestigious national universities: Hiroshima
University, Kyoto University, and Shimane University. Evitayani earned her masters at Shimane
University and her doctorate at Tottori University. She is a member of the Japanese Association of
Animal Science and Asian-Australian Journal Science (AJAS).
