Midterm Exam

Essay 1

In your view, which framework would provide a more objective standard in determining the
best course of action to address a companys CSR issue, utilitarianism or principles of
justice? Explain. (20 points)

In my view, I definitely think that the Principles of Justice is the best course of action to
address a companys CSR issue. I agree that according to the Justice and Fairness
Framework (Principles of Justice), the option that best carries out the components of Justice
& Fairness, is the option that must be adopted by the company.

Essay 2

Any pollution law is unjust because it necessarily violates peoples access to liberty and
property. Discuss. (20 points)

Not true. Nature is all connected. If you poison your land, water, and food, you are poisoning
mine also. You have the liberty to live your life without physically harming others. You can
own property, but don't dump pollutants on the ground because they go into everyones
water. I'm amazed by the ignorance some people have regarding the environment,
specifically the politicians.

Additionally, I disagree because my right to fresh air and a clean environment outweighs
your (or anyone else's) right to pollute it.

2. Analyze each of the four scenarios above that Anderson was considering to pursue,
using the Utility Framework and Principles of Justice. Which scenario is favored by
Utilitarianism? By Principles of Justice?

UTILITY FRAMEWORK

Implementation of four-day week operation

Advantage: longer weekend, save money on costs, company save money on
electricity
Disadvantage: inefficient way to work, morale and productivity decrease

Layoff 36 percent of workforce

Advantage: automatic reduction in overhead costs associated with payroll, benefits
and insurance
Disadvantage: Laying off employees can create an environment of uncertainty for
remaining employees

Tap cheap sources of labor

Advantage: The cost of labor in less developed countries, such as India and China, is
much lower than minimum wages in the U.S.
Disadvantage: obstacles to importing the finished goods and the potential public
backlash over working conditions and labor laws in other countries

Labor Union
Advantage: Acquisition of better wages, accessibility to benefits, securing jobs
Disadvantages: Loss of personal autonomy, union dues, job loss

SCENARIO FAVORED by UTILITARIANISM: Layoff 36 percent of workforce

SCENARIO FAVORED by PRINCIPLES OF JUSTICE: Labor Union
3. Recommend your best scenario based on your analysis in #2 above.

I recommend Layoff 36 percent of workforce. For the benefit of the company I will
favour Utilitarianism.

George realized that ACIs growth and profitability have problems but he wasnt sure
if the source was the management team, product development, marketing or sales.
Georges worst fears began to unfold. The lack of demand from Alcatel was now
spreading to his other customers and although they didnt cancel their backlogs, they
significantly reduced them.
He could no longer avoid a layoff. The remaining workers would go back on five-day
work week.
