Answer all questions from Part A and any four questions from Part B

PART A

1. What do you mean by velocity of flow and velocity of whirl?

2. Derive an expression for the force exerted when a liquid jet strikes on a stationery
vertical flat plate.
3. What is the purpose of an air vessel fitted in the pump?
4. Define slip and negative slip of a reciprocating pump.
5. Define ideal indicator diagram?

PART B
6. A jet of water of 30mm diameter strikes a hinged square plate at its center with a
velocity of 20m/s. The plate is deflected through an angle of 20 0. Find the weight of
the plate. If the plate is not allowed to swing, what will be the force required at the
lower edge of the plate to keep the plate in vertical position.
7. A jet of water having a velocity of 30m/s strikes a series of curved vanes mounted
on a wheel which is rotating at 300rpm. The jet makes an angle of 30 0 with the
tangent to wheel at inlet and leaves the wheel with a velocity of 5m/s at an angle of
1200 to the tangent to the wheel at outlet. Water is flowing outward in a radial
direction. The outer and inner radii of the wheel are 0.6 and 0.3m respectively.
Determine
a) Vane angle at inlet, b) Work done per second per kg of water & c) Efficiency of
the wheel.
8. A Pelton wheel has a mean bucket speed of 10m/s with a jet of water flowing at the
rate of 700 liters/s under a head of 30m. The bucket deflects the jet through an
angle of 1600. Calculate the power given by water to the runner and hydraulic
efficiency of the turbine. Assume Cv = .98
9. Draw an indicator diagram, considering the effect of acceleration and friction in
suction and delivery pipes. Find an expression for the work done per second in case
of single acting reciprocating pump.
10. What is the effect of acceleration of the piston on the velocity and acceleration
of water and delivery pipes? Obtain an expression for the pressure head due to
acceleration in the suction and delivery pipes.
11. A single-acting reciprocating pump has piston diameter 15 cm and stroke
length 30 cm. The centre of pump is 5 m above the water level in the sump. The
diameter and length of the suction pipe are 10 cm and 8 m respectively. The
separation occurs if the absolute pressure head in the cylinder during suction stroke
falls below 2.5 m of water. Calculate the maximum speed at which the pump can run
without separation.
Take atmospheric pressure head=10.3 m of water.
