3. Setting up

(A) Ink Feeding

<01> [Right image]
Make sure the components for setting up ink:
6 kinds of black and color ink (C, M, Y, K, Lc, Lm)
2 kinds of syringes (Wide tube & Narrow tube)

<02> Make sure the indication sticker on the back side

of ink bottle holder.

[Left image] You may draw silicone tube out of

rubber coupler to pull out ink feeding bottle.

<03> Remove the ink bottle caps and fill each ink into ink
feeding bottle according to the indication.

Avoid ink ingestion or splashes on skin or

in eyes. Failure to do so may cause
difficulty in breathing or damage. Keep
used bottles out of the reach of children. Do not drop the ink on the skin. If it is got on the skin, wash it off immediately.

-8-
Avoid dust which not to be added into the ink.
If it fails, ink must be useless and also ink feeding line (tube), damper, or print-head may be clogged.

Teflon tube: PTFE (Poly Tetra Fluoro Ethylene), Teflon has excellent merits that remarkable resistance to high
temperature and to corrosive chemicals. But it is easy to be broken and to be deformed by a physical impact. And a
deformed tube would make interruption or leakage on the feeding of ink.

Securely cap and put a used empty bottle into a plastic bag and dispose of it as an industrial waste. Observe any
regulations for disposal of used ink bottle.

<04> Recap each ink feeding bottle tightly after filling up.
Put back Y-CR on the front side by hand.

<05> Open the cover of Y-CR. (If the cover is

packed with adhesive tapes, remove it first)

Please pay attention to the TEFLON tubes.

-9-
<07> Pull 6 dampers out of X-CR pin. (Keep vertical line)

[Above image]
To avoid damage on membrane of damper, do not hold a
center of damper. And also keep vertical line (pull out
vertically) to avoid a breakage of print-head needle.
<08> [Left image]
Hold a damper as the outlet face to the upper direction, and put thin tube
of syringe into the outlet.

<09> Draw the plunge of syringe within 5 to 10 grids slowly and wait until a negative
pressure in syringe barrel would become weak. If it becomes weak, add pressure a little
more and wait.

- 10 -
<10> On the repeating of above step, an ink will come into the damper and fill it slowly.
Control the negative pressure to fill two-thirds of damper room with ink.

[Left image]
Make sure ink feeding
tube whether it is filled with air before putting
damper into. (Sometimes an ink in the damper
can be draw out of damper) If it is not filled
with ink correctly, fill the damper with ink again
and then put the damper into the X-CR needle
immediately.

[Left image] At least a half of damper room must be filled with ink without a negative pressure of syringe.

<11> Remove thin tube from the damper outlet. And put the damper vertically into correct needle of print-head.

<12> Fill each remainder dampers as above steps and put it vertically on each needle.
Reassemble the damper cover.
Replace the X-CR to right side and lock it with the lock for X-CR.

- 11 -
(B) Ink Feeding through waste ink line

<01> Make sure the location that X-CR places on its

home position (right side of Y-CR) and Y-CR places on
the back side of machine.
Open the waste ink door at the right side of machine.

[Left image]
Open small door and pick a waste ink tube
out of the waste ink room.
(waste ink tube is a part of Y-CR)

<02> [Right image]

Connect the waste ink tube with a thick tube of syringe.
(fix the connection tightly to prevent a leakage of air or ink)

<03> Draw a syringe plunge slowly within 5 to 10 grids of syringe barrel.

Wait for the barrel is being filled with waste ink.

- 12 -
During this step, all kind of the ink in the
dampers are going into the print-head and
filling print-head up.
And all ink are mixed in the capping unit, then mixed ink are
extracted by syringe through the waste tube.

When the barrel is filled with waste ink until 3 grids,

release a pressure slowly. Then unlock the X-CR, and move
X-CR to 150mm leftward.

And draw syringe plunge again fully to remove a waste ink

completely in the capping unit and waste ink line.

<04> Pull the thick tube out of the waste ink tube. And replace the waste ink tube into the waste ink room.

End of Procedure.

- 13 -

Print nozzle check pattern and follow the on-screen
instructions.

Generally, Cleaning process is performed

when the printing output is dim. So you
may as well do Printing nozzle check pattern after the
Cleaning process. Repeating of Cleaning process is not
required except the result pattern is bad.

<04> Make sure the Nozzle Check Pattern as [Right image].

End of Procedure.

- 20 -
(B) Print-head Alignment

Alignment (Calibration) is required to finish the nozzle test of new machine.

Generally it is no more required to do again after the first setting up, except the
changing of Print-head or a misaligned vertical lines appear in the printout.

Prepare more than 3 pcs of A4 size papers to perform Calibration procedure

- 22 -
7. Operation (recommended)
(A) Keyboard

POWER (Green LED): It is lighting on (idle time) or

blinking (X-CR is working) when the machine is turned
on.

ERROR (Red LED): Normally It is lighting when the

machine is in trouble. Or it is blinking alternately
together with Green LED.

1) Z-UP button: (When it is pressed,) lift the bed up. If

it pressed over 3 seconds, lift bed up continuously
until upper height sensor discontinues the lifting.

a. If Y-CR locate front side and so the upper height detect sensor is out of the range of bed, this button will not work.
b. The bed can be lifted up when it is stopped by upper height sensor. Hold Z-UP button and press Z-DOWN, the bed is lifted up
beyond a limitation, step by step.

2) Z-DOWN: Lift the bed down. 3) Y-JOG (left one): Move Y-CR to frontward.
4) Y-JOG (right one): Move Y-CR to backward. 5) STAND-BY: Move Y-CR between start (pre-printing position) and home position.
6) POWER: (When it pressed over 5 seconds) Epson board is turned on or off.

*Special function
1) Hold FEEDING button down for 3 seconds to nozzle cleaning.
2) Hold left Y-JOG and press right one (or inversely) to calibrate the torque of Y-Motor.

- 23 -
a. It has not influence on Printing torque, Moving (or positioning)
torque only.
b. This function works when Y-CR is being restricted by a Y-position
sensor.
3) Hold Z-UP and press Z-DOWN (refer to right)

(B) Printing Job

Lay a paper on the right corner of bed and the front. And adjust a
gap between the paper (or bed) and nozzle by using of Z-UP button.

FreeJet 290 machine detects a maximum distance (3mm) from

nozzle to bed (or media) automatically by upper height sensor. It
would help user to free from a possible risk, a nozzle collision with
an object or a media or the bed.

- 24 -
The gap must be set within the distance, 1 to 3mm. And
then place X-CR to its home position (right side of Y-CR)
by hand.

There is no problem to move X-CR and Y-

CR slowly by hand except the printer is on
working. But if you move those carriages on its working, it
would cause a blowing out of a fuse.

Avoid contacting the surface of

nozzle to bed (or media). It may
cause critical breakage on nozzle.
Always be careful when you adjust the printing heights.

Push the STAND-BY button to set Y-CR on its Start

position (front side of machine). If Y-CR moves to
backward, you may push the STAND-BY button one
more to set Y-CR on its Start position.

And call an image what you print onto a paper in the

printing application program, and make printing
command.
(** New positioning system was introduced from ver. 5.11 generation machine.)

- 25 -
8. Preventive Maintenance

Stained part with dirt (dust, waste ink, etc.) would bring a machine into trouble. To prevent a realistic hazard and an
operation error, systematic cleaning is highly recommended. Systematic cleaning may extend an expected life span of
each consumable part and Machine itself.

Naturally, an ink may bring about deformation, hardening and corrosion on some printer parts over a long period of time. And a deformed,
hardened or corroded part arise various problem on FreeJet machine. And also a lump of waste ink on the working part or a stained
sensing part may cause an error or secondary issues.

Keep regular and systematic cleaning procedure. It would help you to use FreeJet machine more safety and easily.

In a day or two
Turn on the FreeJet machine once in a day or two at least. Then the machine will do nozzle cleaning automatically on its initialization
process. It cleans the nozzle and refreshes an ink in the print-head also.
And make sure and run each moving part to prevent a lubricated part from drying out.

After every printing works

Place the X-CR in its home position (right side of Y-CR) and make sure that the nozzle is covered with the capping unit securely. (Fix the
X-CR with lock for X-CR if the machine is fitted with the lock part.)
(** X-CR LOCK was introduced as from Feb. 2006)

- 26 -
Make sure the linear scale and sliding shaft for X-CR whether it is stained with
dirt or ink, after every printing job. And if it is stained, make it clean, as following.

Wear the protective gloves to protect your hand and prepare the lint free paper or
soft cloth with liquid cleaner and the lubricant oil.

1. Cleaning the linear scale (when it is stained)

The linear scale, X-CR scale, is most sensitive part. Give

attention to your cleaning or touching on the scale part
whenever you work.

- 27 -
If the scale is stained with dirt or ink, X-CR would be moved irregularly or could not finish its initialization process correctly when FreeJet
machine is turned on.
Clean the scale softly with lint free wiper that soaked in liquid cleaner.

2. Cleaning the Shaft, X-CR (when it is stained)

The shaft must be coated with lubricant oil.

If the X-CR scale is contaminated, clean it with the paper in cleaner immediately.
And give a coat of lubricant oil with lint free paper wiper on the shaft after the
cleaning.

Never apply lubricant oil directly to the X-CR shaft.

Always keep indirect way of the coating.

Once a week (in operation days)

(A) Cleaning cap and wiper

1. Lift down the bed

2. Place Y-CR to front
3. Power off
4. Open the Y-CR cover
5. (release the X-CR lock)
Place X-CR to center by hand

- 28 -
Wear the safety equipments
(gloves, goggles, etc.) and
prepare the lint free paper or
cotton bud and liquid cleaner.

The capping unit and wiper

would be deformed and
contaminated by waste ink.
Especially the sealing part
(rubber material) and wiper
blade would be deformed more
easily under the poor surroundings. For, make sure the cap and wiper are always clean and free of ink remainders.

To maintain a clean condition of the cap and sealing part particularly, clean the cap with paper (soft cloth or cotton bud) that soaked in
liquid cleaner, and remove any waste ink lump.

Pumping Gear

Cap

Wiper

- 29 -
Push up a cap rightward
and hold it. [left image]

And rotate pumping gear

(orange arrow in the
image) downward to draw
a wiper out. [right image]

Clean the (hardened) wiper with a paper (or a cloth) soaked in liquid cleaner.
Shake the wiper softly on the cleaning.
And wipe out each surface where the wiper and cap are faced.
Make sure the wiper is softened.

On the last, rotate the pumping gear upward to replace the wiper under the
metal bar. (If you forget the last step, it would cause an initialization error.)

Be careful not to damage the components in attempt to

clean inside the FreeJet Machine.

- 30 -
(B) Cleaning nozzle and nozzle protector

1. Lift down the bed

2. Place Y-CR to front
3. Power off
4. Open the Y-CR cover
5. (release the X-CR lock)
Place X-CR to center by
hand

[Left image] With the paper soaked in liquid cleaner, touch the surface of
print-head (Nozzle) softly. And wait more than a half of minutes.

Do not rub against the surface of nozzle with the

paper within the cleaning. Nozzle would be defective
easily.

This nozzle cleaning is also efficient way to solve a clogged nozzle.

For example, when the printed nozzle check pattern is too bad, this nozzle
cleaning is highly recommended.
(refer to chapter 6, Nozzle check)

- 31 -
9. Replacing Consumable part
(A) Capping unit replacement

The capping unit is a consumable part. Its durability and

preservation depend on the efficient usage and preventive
maintenance.
This article explains a replacing procedure of Capping unit when
it becomes useless. (HY do not support a cap unit only)

Sealing part of the Cap may be deformed or broken 6 months of

elapsed time approximately, as a natural result.
Keep the preventive maintenance to maintain optimal condition
of FreeJet 290 machine.

Disconnect the power cable before the disassembling and

assembling the printer. And always wear the protective goggles
and gloves to protect your eyes and hand from ink and other hazards.

The capping unit can be divided into two parts, a cap and a frame part.
The cap part protects the nozzle (Print-head) from dirt, dry. And also it ejects a waste ink
to a waste ink tube. Therefore the expected life span of a Print-head is closely
associated with a Cap.
The frame part holds the moving cap with 3 stays (1 hook) and a screw.

- 32 -
To disassemble the Capping assembly, release 4 screws of the sub cover, right side of Y-CR, and detach it from Y-CR.

A Capping assembly is
fixed with only one screw.
Firstly, release the screw.
Open the Y-CR cover and
move X-CR manually to
leftward.

(1) Referring to the figure

left, 3 stays hold the
capping unit as the image
1 shown.
And back side one of
the stays has a hook.

(2) Press the stay carefully to release the capping unit from Y-CR.

Please give heed to linear scale, timing belt, sliding shaft, Print-head and other tender part of X-CR during the
disassembly.

The Stay with hook is easy to be broken, always be careful.

(3) Unhook the stay and draw the capping unit to right ward through the sub door, as the image 3.

- 33 -
(4) Capping assembly is released from the Pump
assembly. But it is still connected with the waste ink
tube.

Do not draw the waste ink

tube too much out of the pump.
If not, the waste ink tube may
be bent and stretched out.

(5) To pull out a waste ink tube, turn the Capping

assembly as the image 5.

When assembling, make sure

the waste ink tube is correctly
placed at the correct position
and also make sure the tube is fixed tightly with the
cap. If not, it may cause an ink leakage.

(6) Pull the waste ink tube out of the cap carefully.

(7) Pick the cap assembly out of the Y-CR carefully and replace it with new one.

- 34 -
(B) Print-head replacement

(1) Remove the damper cover with

two hand. Be careful not to make an
impact on the Teflon tube.

(2) Pull dampers out of the head needle.

(Keep vertical line)
Do not touch a middle of the damper, to prevent a
leakage of ink.

(3) Loose 2 bolts to release a tube holder

from the X-CR

(4) Set a tube holder and dampers in safety.

Be careful to the leakage of ink out of the
dampers.(lay a cloth or a paper towels under the
damper, to provide against the leakage of ink)

- 35 -
(5-1) Disassembling of X-CR cap. The cap is so easy to be broken that we must give
attention to this step. On first, pull out the back hook.
(it is indicated with the green arrow and located as below image)

(5-2) (5-3) Pull out right and left holder.

(6-1) (6-2) Loose 2 bolt to remove a print

head.

Draw out each screw bolt carefully (keep

screw driver in the vertical line).

And then pull out the print-head carefully.

- 36 -
(7-1) Draw the print head out of the carriage.
Do not make any impact against the surface
of nozzle.

(7-2) Finally, pull out 2 FFC cables one by one.

And then we can replace the print head

Be careful not to make irregular connection on the 5pin cable. Some of the reported trouble cases were caused by
the irregular connection or a change of connection.

Some of the reported cases showed that irregular moving of the head carriage.

Most of those problems, an irregular moving of the X-axis carriage is caused by

an irregular connection of the 5-pin flexible cable.
Please investigate the connecting whether the 5-pin cable is connected regularly
or not
