Assignment 1

1 What impact does social media have on public relations practices, particularly crisis
communications & reputation management? How significant is it for organizations
today to monitor content on social media sites, including hash tags & other signs of
internal & external dialogue?

Social media is very much powerful which one needs to know. Any good or bad news
can go viral. unlike earlier days public relations only meant meeting people and hence
having a good interaction with them and in turn maintaining good relations with others.
But over the years we have seen that the scenario of public relations has certainly
evolved in a big way. The impact of social media has on public relations practices,
particularly crisis communications & reputation management is particularly huge. The
social media plays a key role as now a day plays a key role. People are a lot more
visible on social media and they certainly track the happenings of the company.
Reviews is a major area that reflects the company image in every aspect. This is
important because the companies campaigns ,promotions ,advertising off late is on
social media and if anything goes wrong .It would lead to depreciation in the image of
the company and nowadays any campaign which back fires online has a very bad
impact on the sales and image of the company .The so called hash tags in different
platforms are more hazardous, may it be twitter or for that matter Instagram .Twitter
plays a very handy role in communicating anything and everything .Every other day we
can clearly see some or the other socially driven campaign and if it is against the
company .The news spreads like wild fire and then mending things are very difficult.

2. What other types of traditional media & social media could Dominoes have used to
reach its stakeholders?

It might have happened that the staff wouldnt know that the repercussions would be
such. Hence if Dominoes decides to use the traditional media, the best method would
be using TV Commercials to get back the trust ad focusing on the Quality food of Mac
D as done by Maggie for example. Newspapers can also be used for the process .In this
we would see that though people would not have the option to reply but at the end of
the day they would try and understand .if things were to move ahead .The other method
would be of e-mail ID.The company can send a responsive mail to all the stake holders
with respect to the happening and the response the company took in this
matter.Moreoever in terms of social media ,company can apologize via Facebook
campaigns ,twitter or even Instagram and other media. The company can go ahead and
bring out new discount coupons via which the degraded image of the company can be
improved. Thus, I can say that the company needs to have a strong aggressive
campaign directed towards its shareholders as well as their customers to improve their
image.

3 Are there any other conclusions that you can draw from this incident?

The basic conclusion which can be drawn from this is that we need to be careful before
posting anything on any social media platform and even train the employees that how
handy the social media platforms can be and anything posted can spread like wildfire
.The employees generally just wanted to act cool and hence ended up making some
spoof video just for entertainment but they dint knew the importance and the reach of
the online media and now needless to say they wont do it again and that too if they are
still in their job. Hence the employees must be trained on code of conduct and online
security skills to avoid such incidents in future.

Assignment 1I

Q1. How, according to you, should your employee display his/her choice about a
sensitive issue?

This can vary from person to person and moreover from situation from situation. In terms
of person to person we can say that a person tends to have different traits from one another
and even different people tend to react in a different manner. In terms of situation I feel that
if a person is in a junior position or superior position it is important to bring the sensitive
case in front of the authority. If I were to say with regard to the display of choice about
sensitive issue. I would say if I know that person very well I would go up to him /her and
talk in private as this sensitive issue might lead to useless commotion or even lead to
degradation of the persons image in the office. I would rather prefer it keeping behind the
curtains but still if things dont fall in place I would consult the human resource head with
regard to this matter and if need arises the boss can also be taken into the conversation.
Also there should be a code of ethics followed in order to not incur any big mistake that
might not only lead to your image degradation but also for the company.

Q2. How would you, as a subordinate, be familiarized with your expectation/role?

If we talk about getting familiarized with the expectation or role, it certainly means that the
person has either newly joined or is new in the position. Thus, the team or his immediate
boss would play a key role in this. Networking in the company matters a lot as this will
help know about role and the expected results from the employees, about the company,
rules and regulations etc. This can be done by getting in touch with various people in tea
and lunch break, and having healthy conversation with them. This is because as he is new
in the organization, everything happening to him would be quite new and it would take
time for him to get accustomed. Thus, he can consult with his team head or boss. It is via
them only he can come to know what is expected of him from his job. As the boss would

3
be responsible for him or her .In terms of team members they can enlighten them how the
team works and what each and everyones role is in the team and eventually in the
organization is.The team would be able to make them understand what he is supposed to do
.For e.g. if the new joinee is replacing the person who is a corporate sales executive .He
will be given the same areas, hence he should know via his team and his boss what was the
revenue generated from that area ,who were the existing clients in that area ,which client
gives more revenue when compared to another .Thus the immediate boss and the team
members would be the best source of knowledge when it comes to knowing roles and
expectations.

Q3. Indicate how you would handle a mistake at the highest level, where the stakes are
high?

The first and foremost thing I would do irrespective of the stakes being high or low would
be, I would go to my boss or head ,whosoever it is and end up confronting them with
regard to my mistake .I personally feel that it would be a more grave mistake if I dont tell
my boss and he comes to know via other sources or means .Even if I am confronting the
mistake I should put forth my point of view .I would move ahead and tell him how the
following mistake happened and what was my take on the problem .If my take on the
problem would be new and yet innovative ,he would not mind taking risk but if I would be
dumb in my approach ,he is bound to get angry .The last thing to do in this situation would
be to have a heated argument in this matter because you need to understand that at the end
of the day it certainly is my fault and anything and everything he says within the limit
needs to be heard .

Q4. Mention a case/illustration, how your company can be fair with your employee.

A company if it is into existence needs to understand that it is just because of two things,
firstly its clients and secondly its employees. If either of them dont go along, the company
is bound to be closed down. Thus, nowadays the equality factor is taken too much into
consideration in different companies. The basic case of illustration which I can talk about is
the need for gender equality. There should not be any amount of discrimination with
respect to gender. May it be men or women all should be given equal weightage may it be
in terms of salary, work, incentives etc. If the company is able to achieve this, it would
certainly lead to a good name of the company and in turn lead to the self-satisfaction of the
company but vice versa if the employees come to know that the salary or for that matter
anything is being discriminated on behalf of any factors, it would lead to mishap in the
company and even the employees wont be happy working in the company.

Q5. How would you encourage & expect your subordinates to build their competences or
take decisions involving high risks?

If I were giving my subordinates the power to take high risk decisions, it should be done
from the base level. This means that all of a sudden, the person will not have so much
confidence to take a big decision. If from the initial days, I allow him to take few decision,
it will definitely boost up the confidence of the person. For e.g. if a person is hired for sales
and he gets the lead from a big client, ideally, he would want a head person to go for that as
he would be too junior for such an amount transaction but I feel it should him only to go
forward. If he loses this deal, I wont be disappointed because at the end he would have
learnt a lot and he wont make the mistakes next time which he made here.
