Music Concept/Title of Lesson: Octopuses Garden Performance and Beyond


Grade Level: 5th
Date & Time: 1/10/17 Period 2

Objectives:
1. Students will be able to perform basic rhythms using a ukulele
2. Students will be able to read basic rhythms written in standard musical notation

Materials:
Laptop Tickets
Speakers Dry erase markers
Projector

Procedure:
1. Take attendance
2. Ukuleles
a. Table Captains
i. Announce table captains, they pass out the ukuleles for their table while I
prepare for the day and take attendance.
b. Fiddle time Practice your chords for Octopuses Garden
c. Octopuses Garden Performance
i. Play whole song once
ii. Give each student their white belt
d. Karate Packet and Checklist
i. Pass out to each student: 1 copy checklist, 1 copy Yellow Belt Song
ii. Go over the packet
1. Checklist to show your progress
2. Put your name on this and also your class, the rest will be filled out
by me as you go along.
3. This is your new song to learn for your Yellow Belt in Ukulele Karate
a. On it are instructions and resources for you to learn the next
song.
e. Make Folders for all resources
i. Construction paper and masking tape
ii. Fold paper in half to make a folder, masking tape to put name on folder.
iii. Make sure your name is on all your materials
f. Begin learning new song
i. Work independently or with a small group, remain on task or I will move you
ii. I will be working with all of those who felt like they struggled with
Octopuses Garden.
iii. Remember this is not a competition, its individual learning time
Assessment:
Teacher will listen and visually observe students performance of rhythms
Teacher will listen and visually observe students ability to perform basic rhythms written in standard
music notation

as rhythm, pitch, form, and harmony) in music selected for performance.
MU:Pr6.1.5a Perform music, alone or with others, with expression, technical accuracy, and
