11:1 Vayehi chol-ha'arets safah echat udevarim achadim.
En ese entonces se hablaba un solo idioma en toda la tierra

11:2 Vayehi benos'am mikedem vayimtse'u vik'ah be'erets Shin'ar vayeshvu sham.
Al emigrar al oriente, la gente encontr una llanura en la regin de Sinar, y all se asentaron.

11:3 Vayomeru ish el-re'ehu havah nilbenah levenim venisrefah lisrefah

vatehi lahem halvenah le'aven vehachemar hayah lahem lachomer.
Un da se dijeron unos a otros: Vamos a hacer ladrillos, y a cocerlos al fuego. Fue as como
usaron ladrillos en vez de piedras, y asfalto en vez de mezcla.

11:4 Vayomeru havah nivneh-lanu ir umigdal verosho bashamayim vena'aseh-lanu shem pen-nafuts
al-peney kol-ha'arets.
Luego dijeron: Construyamos una ciudad con una torre que llegue hasta el cielo.

11:4 Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens.

II Psalm 137 [ca. 2 45]

137:1 By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.
Junto a los ros de Babilonia, nos sentbamos y llorbamos, al acordarnos de Sion.

137:2 We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof.
Sobre los sauces colgamos nuestras arpas.

137:3 For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us
required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.
Pues all los que nos haban llevado cautivos nos pedan canciones, y los que nos atormentaban
nos pedan alegra, diciendo: Cantadnos alguno de los cnticos de Sion.

137:4 How shall we sing the LORD's song in a strange land?

Cmo cantaremos la cancin del SEOR en tierra extraa?

III Lux Aeterna [ca. 2]

Job 25:5 Ecce etiam luna non splendet et stellae non sunt mundae in conspectu eius.
Si ni la misma luna le resplandece ni aun las estrellas son puras ante sus ojos.
 Songs of Zion fue compuesta reuniendo textos bblicos en versiones correspondientes a la

religin juda, protestante y catlica cantados en hebreo, ingls y latn. Estos tres textos del Antiguo

Testamento hablan de la voluntad de los hombres, el sufrimiento y una relacin con Dios no exenta de

conflictos.

Bavel narra en hebreo la historia de la Torre de Babel hasta el momento en que los hombres

se arengan a realizar la construccin. Aunque la edificacin de la torre y el castigo divino no estn

incluidos explcitamente en el texto, estn representados musicalmente; en cuanto la msica llega al

clmax los idiomas comienzan a mezclarse hasta volverse indistinguibles, finalizando con palabras

sueltas y siseo. De acuerdo al Apocalipsis de Baruch la torre fue destruida por los vientos.

El Salmo 137 tiene como protagonistas a los hebreos en el momento del exilio, se sientan a la

orilla de ro llorando y, en seal de duelo, cuelgan los instrumentos de los rboles. Los babilonios se

mofan y arengan a los judos a cantar. Pero estos permanecen fieles y reflexionan Cmo cantaremos

la cancin del SEOR en tierra extraa? La versin elegida es la King James, la Biblia protestante de

1611 que es conocida en el Reino Unido como la Authorized Version.

La pieza final, Lux Aeterna, rene dos textos en versin latina. Las dos palabras del ttulo,

que se repiten, remiten a la obra homnima de Ligeti. El resto del texto pertenece al Libro de Job -

quien es puesto a prueba mediante enormes desgracias- y es pronunciado por su amigo Bildad. Habla

del hombre como una criatura imperfecta e incapaz de juzgar los designios divinos.
