LAB

In order to test the effectiveness of

antimicrobial products, a lab was
conducted to examine the growth
of microorganisms. We began the
lab by disinfecting our work area
with surface cleaner. Then, a
control agar plate was used to grow
the bacteria already present in a
certain object. A cotton swab was
used to rub the object to transfer
them to the petri dish. The cotton
swab was streaked on the agar in
quadrants to isolate colonies. After

to dry, a new cotton swab was
rubbed on the object and then
streaked on a new agar plate. Both
of the plates were then labeled and
put into an incubator for at least

THE TYPES
SANATIZERS:
Sanatizers are the weakest
antimicrobials in public health.
Typically used to clean surfaces and
reduce the amount of bacteria.
Sanitizers will specifically say if
they can be used to on furniture or
if they are for hand used.

DISINFECTANTS:
Disinfectants are the preferred
public-health antimicrobial for
common surfaces in medical
settings. They kill fungi and bacteria
and some can kill viruses.
Disinfectants that kill microbes are
called microbicides, but if they only
stop microbial growth, without
killing the microbe, they are called

Antiviral drugs are a class of medication
when the presence of microbes
used specifically for treating viral
